Mulholland Drive (2001)

recently re-watched Mulholland Drive, a fairly recent David Lynch work.
as Twin Peaks and many other of his films, it's alternately genius and maddeningly obtuse.

(Spoilers ahead)
I heard a rumor that it was supposed to be a pilot for some network and he ended up making it into a feature, but I suspect something else happens. (another rumor is that this was a possible Twin Peaks spin-off vehicle for Audrey Horne / Sherilyn Fenn that was sitting on the shelf for years).

quick review; opening scene, a dark-haired girl is being driven down the eponymous street. the man sitting in the front next to the driver pulls out a pistol and appears to be about to kill the girl but some idiot joyriders round the corner and head them on. stunned, the girl takes her case and stumbles away, eventually crashing in a large home.
a perky blonde moves in and finds her. intrigued by her mystery (she has amnesia) the two of them investigate, finding a ton of money in her bag. Perky blonde wants to try out for a movie part but loses it to a very beautiful girl known as Camilla Rhodes. various events ensue leading to them opening a mysterious blue box (Lynch has a thing for blue).
all of a sudden everything changes. The mysterious dark-haired girl is the real Camilla Rhodes, and she is now a gay lover to the fake Camilla Rhodes...and miss perky, her former friend, is in the process of hiring an assassin to kill her.

so...some folks were in the process of making a movie, 'The Sylvia North Story', and someone comments that they didn't have enough money to do the film. So I think Real Camilla Rhodes is on her way to pay off the producers on the condition that she get the lead part. The limo driver and henchman are working for Fake Camilla Rhodes (or her agent) and they intend to kill her, give the money to the producers, and ensure Fake CR gets the part, having prepared a portrait of her with that name. The two CRs meet and fall in love. meanwhile Perky, scorned, plots revenge.
there's a lot of other stuff going on but that's the main plot...imho.

It's been some time since I've seen this one; I'll have to rewatch it as I also remember coming across some articles about this starting life as a planned TV series.
