~ Part 4

Sydney left her office around 12:15 and made her way across town for her lunch date with Michael Vaughn. She arrived at the restaurant and ordered a glass of wine and went over her notes while waiting for Michael to show up. She glanced at her watch a few times and heaved a sigh of exasperation. She looked around the restaurant, but Michael was nowhere in sight. At 1:05, she glanced at her watch again and realized he was late. The waiter glanced in her direction a few times and each time, she smiled her most confident smile indicating that her “date” would eventually show up. As she sat there, she wondered if he changed his mind about working with her and didn’t want to bother telling her in person. After another twenty minutes, she stood up and was about to leave, when she saw him walking through the doors. He looked at his watch in total disbelief of his lateness and then around the room until he saw her. She was more beautiful then he remembered. He walked over and stood in front of her, ready to explain why he was late.

“I’m sorry I’m late, I…” He rubbed his hand on his forehead in frustration

“It’s okay, the important thing is that that you are here now.” She said as she sat back down

For the past year, he didn’t let himself get involve emotionally with anyone, not seriously, but there was something intriguing about Sydney Bristow. He spent all morning wondering why the hell he’d agreed to go to lunch with her, he only needed to glance at that smile of hers, to find her irresistible. He knew he was way over his head when it came to her. He debated if staying away from her was the best solution to deal with his crush, but the temptation was too strong and he quickly got dressed and made his way to the restaurant.

They were sitting down at one of the outdoor table, smiling at each other in silence as neither of them knew what to say. The waiter came to the table and gave them menus and after taking their drink order, left them alone again.

They smile at each other, then pick up their menus; soft music plays in the background. They glance at each over their menus, then look back down. They exchange glances again. Vaughn begins to speak but hesitates. They return to their menus, both looking nervous and lacking the courage to start the conversation. Vaughn decided his best tactic would be to turn all attention away from himself.

“So, what’s involved in being an image consultant?” He asked as he placed down the menu and stared at her

She studied the menu for a few seconds, then closed it and gave him a calculating look, “I do whatever it takes to help people realize their full potential.” She smiled

“Whatever it takes?” He asked with a raised eyebrow

“Within reason, of course.” She replied

“What would it take for me to realize my full potential?”

“I can’t tell you unless you agree to work with me.” Her eyes sparked with a hint of teasing

“What exactly did Colin tell you about me?”

“Just that you don’t project the image the network is looking for, and that he wants me to help you.”

“So I can keep doing my job, right?”

“Right.”

“So what if I don’t want to keep doing this for the next five years? Maybe I need some excitement in my life.”

Sydney shrugged. “It’s your call.”

But the problem was he did want to keep his job. He may not have approved of the network’s bottom –line mentality, but he still had creative control over the show. “The network wouldn’t be foolish enough to replace him while the show was still the most viewed program in its time slot. Or could they?” he thought to himself

The waiter came back to their table and took their orders. Vaughn ordered another beer and a turkey melt. Sydney ordered a chicken Cesar salad and another glass of white wine. As he watched her order, he pegged her for one of those women who couldn’t eat anything containing more than a microgram of fat without feeling guilty about it. Maybe he was being judgmental, but her hyper-erect posture was convincing him more and more by the minute. “Was he making her nervous? Could she feel that something is happening between us?” He thought as he continued to smile at her

When they were alone again, she said, “I think you want to keep your job or you wouldn’t be here tight now.”

“Maybe. To tell you the truth, I almost didn’t come.”

“What made you change your mind?” She smiled and he lost his train of thoughts. Should he tell the truth about how she intrigued him ever since he first laid eyes on her? She was the reason why he was sitting there now. He couldn’t fully admit to himself, let alone blurred it out to her. So he said the next thing that came to his mind.

“I thought about it long and hard and maybe they are right. Maybe my behavior needs a little help.”

“I’m glad you think so.” She smiled and looked up to him

“Well, He leaned in towards her, “Just don’t go announce it to everyone, it could ruin my reputation.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” She whispered

“Okay then, where do we start?” He said as his eyes turned away from her and focused on a woman sitting near by with her daughter. They were laughing as they shared a huge sundae. Sydney followed his eyes and watched him watched them for a few seconds.

“Do you know them?”

Vaughn turned his eyes back to her, “No.” But Sydney could see the pain reflecting in his eyes. Vaughn sensed her stare and decided to tell her the truth.

“I lost my wife and daughter fourteen months ago.” He said lowering his head to avoid her eyes on him. Without thinking, Sydney reached across the table and took his hand in hers.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know.” She said full of compassion in her voice.

“How could you have known?” He asked, raising his head to meet her eyes again

“Maybe if I had researched you better.”

“You did research on me?” Vaughn’s eyebrows shot up, and his sandwich halted midway to his mouth. He set it on the plate and pinned her with his gaze.

“I do that with all my clients. How else would I find out the best way to approach them?”

“Is your opinion of me changed in the last few minutes?” He asked, searching for the truth in her eyes.

“A little bit. Now I have a better understanding of what you’ve gone through and why the major change in your behavior.”

“I’m not a bad guy Sydney. I’m just a man who tries to deal with his lost the best he can.”

“I know.” She said, squeezing his hand tighter as they exchanged a smile.

“Let’s get out of here.” Vaughn asked, looking her straight in the eyes.

“Okay.” She answered as she and Vaughn split off the check and made their way outside.

They headed for the parking lot when Vaughn turned to Sydney. “Want to go for a walk in the park?”

“Sure. Let me just put my stuff in the car.” She said as she opened her car door and put her bag in the backseat as Vaughn leaned against the car, hands across his chest.

They were walking in the park and actually enjoying each other’s company. Vaughn realized that it was easy to talk to her. She listened to him and that made him feel very good. He thought that if nothing else happened between them, at least they could be friends.

“My friends Will and Eric tried to set me up on dates soon after they died, you know kind of get back in the game, but I wasn’t interested. I still feel like a sense of betrayal if I move on with my life. You know what I mean?”

“Of course, but do you think it is fair for you to stop living because they aren’t here to give you their blessings?”

“I know I should move on with my life, but I haven’t found that someone I want to be with.” He said, staring down at his feet as he walked.

“Maybe you should open your heart to the possibility of falling in love again.” She said as he looked up at her

“What about you Sydney, any sad stories you want to tell me about?” He smiled at her, as he was glad the subject was now focused on her

“I dated this guy Noah for a year, turned out he preferred the company of chat rooms instead of spending time with me.”

“How awful!” Vaughn smiled as Sydney blushed of embarrassment about confiding in him her most intimate details about her sex life.

“Yeah, well I haven’t been lucky in love either. My best friend Francie keeps trying to set me up on blind dates, but so far, I refused to go.”

“Why is that?”

“I don’t know. I think that part of me is afraid to trust a man again. My relationship with Noah opened my eyes on a few things. I was naïve and I trusted him and it came back to bite me in the ass.”

He looked at her and laughed. She turned to look at him and couldn’t help laughing too. Without realizing it, their bodies moved closer to one another as they continue to walk back to the parking lot.

They reached Sydney’s car and she was about to get in when Vaughn placed a hand in front of her, to stop her from going in.

“Tonight I have this thing to go to, “Vaughn flashed a mischievous smile. “It‘s a party to honor shallow, self-important executives from the network. I have to make an appearance, you know since I work for them. Want to go?”

She ponders for a few seconds as he watched her intensively.

“Tonight could be my opportunity to prove to you what a noble guy I am.”

And it would be Sydney’s chance to prove to herself she was a woman who knew how to go after what she wanted.

“Okay, I’ll go. Happy?”

“Thrilled.” He smiled at her

“Where is the party?”

“The Ritz-Carleton Hotel, 7:00pm.”

“I’ll meet you there.” She said, moving from underneath his arms and sat in her car.

“I’ll see you there.” Vaughn said, backing away from her car to let her back away from the parking lot. After she left, he got in his car and smiled all the way home.
