~ Part 11
Thunder Boomed. Darkness surrounded him and rain slashed his face. The squeal of tires reverberated in surreal tones through the night. He reached out, grasping thin air as his throat closed on his scream. He stood helpless as the car skidded in slow motion, then slammed into the power pole, the book of impact rising over the turbulence of the storm. His heart pounding, he ran toward the vehicle. Live cables fell from above, spraying sparks all around him. He froze as one of the lines dropped perilously close.
Then he was moving, pressing his hands to the glass of the driver’s window, desperately peering inside. He yanked on the door handle, but the collision had bent the frame. He reached through his consciousness for them , but the dream slipped away, dissipating like a fog. Their essence lingered, as though they’d just walked through the room and would return at any moment. But he knew they would not. They were gone.
A bolt of lightening lit the sky, illuminating the figure in the car. The air bag had failed to deploy. The images of Alice and Emma have quickly been replaced by the sweet face of Sydney‘s. Sydney lay lifeless across the steering wheel. He couldn’t protect her any more than he could protect his family.
His chest seized as he silently screamed.
Vaughn startled awake. Disoriented, he pushed himself upright. Moonlight streamed through an opening in the curtain an pooled on the floor. His heart pounded and feeling of doom pressed down on him. Something was terribly wrong. He closed his eyes and tried to focus on the wretchedness gripping him.
For the past year, he’d been dreaming about Alice and Emma but tonight, their faces have been replaced by Sydney‘s He crouched on the side of the bed, gripping his pillow as despair swallowed him. He blinked her face into view as she lay beside him, alive and vibrant. She was sleeping peacefully, her arm resting softly against the pillow. She looked like an angel, his guardian angel.
Laying on his side, he studied her for a few minutes.
Sydney.
She had come to mean so much to him in such a short time since they’ve known each other. He was sure she had been sent to help him deal with the blackness surrounding him. As he watched her sleep, he couldn’t imagine his life without her by his side, and tonight’s dream prove it to him. He decided to push his thoughts away as he saw her slowing waking up.
Sydney started to stir and turned her head to see him watching her intensively.” Hey.” She smiled.
“Hey.” he smiled. He pushed himself up and rested his head against the headboard.
“How long have you been awake?” she curled up in his arms.
“A while.” he closed his arms tightly around her as he brushed her hair away from her forehead as he softly kiss it.
“Is anything wrong?” Her eyes filled with concern.
“Just nightmares creeping up again.” he said still stroking her hair as she looked up at him and could see the fear in his eyes.
“It was just a dream, “she soothed with her voice and her touch.
He turned his face into her palm and breathed in the vanilla scent that is typically her while his heart galloped with dread.
“You want to talk about it?” she asked concernedly as she felt like this time the dream had seemed more real for him than she ever imagined.
He couldn’t resist the urge to pull her even closer into his arms, to hear her heart beating against his chest and to be able to touch her as she stared at him with her big brown eyes full of compassion and lust for him.
“Just being here with me, in this bed, helps more than I can tell you.” He kissed her forehead.
Sensing that he didn’t feel like sharing the details of his dream with her, at least for now, she decided to do her best to change the direction of their conversation to a lighter mood, especially after their wonderful night together.
She pushed him against the pillow and straddled him, letting the sheet slipped and his gaze slid to the exposed curve of her breast. She adjusted the sheet and cleared her throat. “Now pay attention.” She smiled as she placed her hands on each side of his face, forcing him to look at her.
“Well, it’s kind of difficult when you’re sitting on my lap, naked but trust me, you have my total focus.” he said putting his hands on her hips to stop her from going anywhere.
“I was thinking about the work were supposed to be doing together.” She said as he softly stroked her back.
“Uh, huh.” He raised an eyebrow and smiled.
“Well, the Network is organizing a charity hockey game to help raise money for the children’s hospital and I know you play hockey in your spare time. So, I think it would boost your image if you would participate in such a great event.”
“You think that if I pay hockey in this charity game, that would help convince the Network that I’m going along with this silly makeover they hired you to do on me?”
“I think it’s not only a great exposure for you, but you would also participate in cause that mean a great deal to me.”
“It would mean so much to you to have me participate in this hockey game?”
“Yes, it would.” she smiled
“Done. I’ll sign up today.” He smiled. There was no way he could resist in doing something that meant so much to her.
“That was easy.” She leaned in to rest her head on his chest
“I’m an easy guy.” he said, pulling her tighter into his arms.
“I think the party went relatively well last night, don’t you think?” She whispered against his chest as he kissed the side of her face.
“Except for the part when Will got maybe a little too friendly with Francie over too many margaritas and in deed pissing off Nadia. I saw her eyes when she took him home, I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes this morning. He‘s going to have so serious explaining to do.” he laughed.
“True, but what Will didn’t know is that Francie is a big flirt and didn’t mean anything by it. She’s truly committed to Ken, she’s even talking about moving in with him at the end of the summer.”
“Wow, that’s a big step.”
“I think it’s sweet. They love each other more than anything and they’ve been trough so much to be together. I am really happy for them.” She smiled.
“Now, if only Weiss could finally admit to my sister how he feels about her. That boy has been in love with her for as long as I could remember and always chickened out in telling her.”
“Maybe he should chase her down the mall and make out with her in a dressing room. It seemed to have worked for you. “ she said as he broke into a huge smile, “I’m here don’t I?” She whispered against his neck.
“And if I have a say in this, you’re not going anywhere ever again.” He murmured as he attacked her lips once again.
The Rainbow Room:
Jessica was sitting at the bar, sipping her coffee while going over the inventory when Weiss came in and took a seat next to her.
“Hey Jess.” he said, clearing his throat in the process.
“Eric, what are you doing here so early?” She smiled. You know we don’t open before lunch.”
“I know but I was hoping you would let me buy you breakfast…he looked down and she smirked at his nervousness. If you want.” he said looking back into her blue eyes.
“Eric Weiss are you asking me out?” She said as he smiled at her.
“I guess I am. So will you come with me to breakfast?” He said, wiping little bead of sweat forming on his forehead.
“Hold on a sec.” she got up and made her way to the kitchen to talk to Henry. A few minutes later, she came back with her purse. “Let’s go.”
“You mean it?” He smiled.
“You don’t know how long I have been waiting for you to ask me out.”
“You have? ”He grinned like a teenager with his first big crush.
“Let’s go before I change my mind.” She grabbed his arm.
“After you my lady.” He opened the door for her as Jessica could help but giggled at his sweet attention. “Thank you.” She smiled as she passed in front of him.
“Do you have somewhere special in mind?” She asked as he opened the car door for her.
“I was thinking about that little restaurant by the pier.” he said fidgeting with his keys in his pocket.
“I love that place.” She said enthusiastically, “ I used to go all the time when I first moved to L.A.”
“Well, are feeling adventurous this morning Jess?” he looked at her with a huge smirk on his face.
“Absolutely.” She brushed her hand against his arm before he help her sit down on the passenger seat.
They quickly arrived to the little restaurant by the pier and was greeted by the owner who immediately recognized Eric as an old customer.
“Eric, long time no see. Whose the lovely lady with you?”
“Claude, this is Jessica Vaughn.”
“The Jessica. The one you’ve been bragging about for almost a year now. ”Claude said as Weiss stared at the floor, completely embarrassed as Jessica couldn’t help but smile.
Jessica shot a glance at Weiss before shaking hands with Claude. “Hi.”
Once they were sitting, Jessica took Weiss’s hand from across the table, “don’t be embarrass about what Claude said earlier. Actually, I’m really flatter that you thought of me that way and not just as Michael’s baby sister.”
“I never thought of you as just Michael’s sister. Since Claude already spilled the bean. Yes it’s true, I had a crush on you from the first time I laid eyes on you.”
“How come you never said anything?” she said stroking his hand as Weiss couldn’t believe she was actually sitting across from him and stroking his hand.
“I don’t know. I’ve seen the kind of guys you’ve dated, and there is no way I could measure up to any of them.”
“Were you ever going to tell me how you felt about me?”
“Maybe I was afraid you would laugh at me.”
“And why would I do that.”
“Take a good look at me. “ he let go of her hand and raised his arms up in the air, “I’m not considered a pretty boy, funny yes, but pretty, definitely not and you…you’re so beautiful.”
“I like you a lot Eric and I’m glad to be here with you today.”
“I’m glad to be with you too.”
“Want to share the chief’s special?” He said glancing at the menu while stealing glances at her.
“Why not. I’m feeling adventurous this morning.” She winked as he laughed.
“Claude, give us the chief’s special with two cups of coffee.” Eric said as he closed the menu and grabbed Jessica’s hand from across the table.
“Coming right up.” Claude said before returning in the kitchen.
“If someone who have told me this morning that I would be sitting her with you, sharing a meal, I would have said to them that they were nuts.”
“Well, I’m glad you finally asked me out.”
“What are you doing tomorrow morning?”
“Hopefully having breakfast in bed with you.”
