~ Part 22~

They kept staring each other down until Vaughn finally found his voice to speak

“What are you doing here?” Vaughn asked, trying to keep his voice down.

“I need to speak to my daughter? “ Jack replied in an assertive tone. “Is she here?” He asked, but in fact both men knew that Sydney was somewhere in the house. The question was, what happens now?”

“It’s not a good idea…she…” Vaughn said when Sydney came into the living room to see who was at the door. “Dad. Why are you here?” She asked as she came to stand beside Vaughn. Vaughn grabbed her hand and squeezed it in reassurance that they were in this together.

“Please hear me out.” Jack pleaded for his daughter to give him another chance to explain.

Sydney glanced at Vaughn who nodded, “You have ten minutes.” She replied as Jack nodded in agreement. He followed them inside and closed the door behind him.

“I’m just going to go put some clothes on.” She said, tightening her robe around her waist and excusing herself to go in Vaughn’s bedroom to retrieve her clothes. Vaughn and Jack watched her disappear in the bedroom and closed the door.

Vaughn’s eyes returned to Jack who still stood in the doorway. Jack eyed rested on Vaughn’s miss-button shirt and grey boxer shorts and a little smile appeared on his face.

“So, you’re Michael Vaughn.” Jack said with a disapproving look on his face. Vaughn’s lack of clothes was not helping on making a good first impression on Jack Bristow.

“Yes, I am.” Vaughn said proudly. Jack nodded. “Look Mr. Bristow, I don’t want Sydney to get hurt.” Vaughn replied defensively.

“We totally agree on that. My daughter’s best interest is all that matters to me.” Jack said as he kept an eye on the bedroom door.

“Was that before of after she found out the truth about you? Vaughn asked angrily.

“Mr. Vaughn, I don’t need to be reminded that I screwed up with my daughter. She may hate me right now, but I know Sydney, she will listen to me.” Jack said angrily but clamed up when he saw the bedroom door open and Sydney making her way back to the living room.

“So what was so important that you needed to see me?” She asked as she and her father took a seat on the opposite couches.

Vaughn turned to Sydney and squeezed her hand, “If you need me, I’ll be in the kitchen.” Vaughn said looking at both of them before leaving them to talk in private. Father and daughter were sitting in silence for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, Jack leaned forward and grabbed Sydney’s hand in his.

“Sydney, I can’t say enough how sorry I am to have hurt you and your mother. Jack said looking at the hurt in his daughter’s eyes. The reason I am here is because I had to worn you that my lawyer will ask you to speak on my behalf at the trail. Getting up from his seat, he quickly sat down next to her and looked deeply into her eyes. “Sydney, I know that you don’t like me very much right now and you have every right to be angry with what I did, but please I need you.” He begged.

Sydney just sat there, unable to speak as her father’s eyes pleaded for her forgiveness. Jack decided that this might be the only chance he has to talk to his daughter before the trial starts in less than a week. He wanted so much for her to understand and to forgive him. So with one last plea, he continued.

“I know I have no right to ask you to do this for me, but think of your mother…he said as Sydney lifted her head up to look at her father, hasn’t she paid enough for my mistakes?” He blurred out in desperation. Furry emerged from Sydney’s eyes.

“What about me dad? Haven’t I paid enough? She replied angrily. She stood up and started pacing around the room. “Everything I ever believed in was a lie…all of it. You and mom, my god that was joke! She sighed. If you truly loved her, you wouldn’t have cheated on her. Also what gives you the right to come here tonight and ask me to testify on your behalf?” She shouted.

“Sweetheart, no matter what you believe, I do love you.” Jack stood up and placed a hand on her arm.

“You love me? You say that but I guess you didn’t love us enough, because if you did, you would have told us the truth from the start.” She replied furiously.

“I did what I did to protect you…don’t you see that?” Jack replied as tears started rolling down Sydney’s cheek.

“I need time to think about all of this.” She said turning her back on her father. Her arms crossed tightly on her chest as she was staring out the window. Jack stood there, wanting to reach out to her, but he knew that she needed time to process the pain and anger she was feeling inside.

“I understand.” Jack said turning toward the front door. With one hand on the handle, he turned to look at his daughter once more. “ I do love you Sweetheart.” He said as he opened the door and left.

Sydney was still looking out the window as tears rolled down her cheeks. Vaughn heard the front door closed and knew that Jack had left. He came out of the kitchen and without saying anything; he placed his arms tightly around Sydney’s waist. She leaned back against his chest and closed her eyes.

“Why can’t they just leave us alone?” She sighed

“It will all be over soon, I promise.” Vaughn replied, kissing her hair. She turned around to face him and placed her arms around his neck. “I’m so glad you’re here.”

“I told you before, I’m not going anywhere.” He brushed his thumb across her cheek to wipe away the tears.

“Thank you.” She leaned in to kiss him gently on the lips.

“You don’t have to thank me. I know you would have done the same for me, if the role had been reversed.” He smiled and she nodded.

“ I’m worried about my mother. She said as Vaughn pulled her to sit on the couch with him.
She’s a strong woman, but I’m sure this is killing her as much as it is killing me.”

“Why don’t you give her a call? Vaughn replied as Sydney curled up in his arms as he rubbed her shoulder.” I know you miss her and I’m sure she misses you too.”

“I’ll give her a call in the morning.” She said, closing her eyes and listening to Vaughn’s heartbeat. He was gently brushing her hair while softly talking to her.

After a few minutes, he looked down and saw that she had fallen asleep. He gently untangled himself from her and slowly picked her up in his arms and carried her to the bedroom. He laid her delicately on the bed and covered her with a blanket. He turned off the light and went back to the living room. He sat on the couch and turned on the television. After a few minutes of channel surfing, he got up and walked to his office. Might as well work since there was no way he could sleep. Jack’s visit tonight had him agitated and worried.

He knew the next few weeks would be hectic for Sydney, especially if she was called to testify on her father’s behalf. He didn’t mean to listen to their conversation earlier, but he couldn’t resist. After a few minutes of staring at the blank screen on his computer, he opened his desk drawer and retrieved a small engagement box. He took out the ring and rolled it between his fingers to read the inscription inside.

The inscription said: “Sydney and Michael forever.” He read with a smile on his face.

Vaughn placed the ring back in the box and closed the drawer. He made reservations at Sydney’s favorite restaurant and booked two days off to get away for a romantic weekend. He wasn’t sure the timing was right as Jack’s trail was about to start and Sydney would be ask to testify, but he couldn’t wait to marry Sydney. He learned from Emma and Alice’s deaths that life was too precious and that you shouldn’t postpone your happiness because it could all disappear in an instant. What matters is that they are happy today and tomorrow is another day.

He got up from his chair and switched off the light. He made his way to the bedroom and stood at the end of the bed and just stared at Sydney. She looked like an angel, his beautiful angel. He took off his shirt and slipped underneath the covers beside her. Sensing his presence near her, she edged closer to him and rested her head on his crook of his neck. His arms immediately went around her shoulder as he dropped his head on top of hers. After a few minutes just watching her sleep, he finally fell asleep as well.

The setting has been set, the ring has been purchased, the romantic getaway weekend all planned out and the proposal rehearsed a few times… now if nothing comes along to screw up his plans, in two days time, he is going to ask Sydney to marry him.
