Okay. This is my first fanfic ever, so be gentle :smiley: And since my English isn't perfect, I'm sure there are a lot of errors in my writing. This story is completely AU.

Disclaimer: I don't own anything.

Kiitos anniina kun oot niin ihana :hug:

Summer Days Drifting Away

Chapter 1

Sydney's POV

Had I known this place is in the middle of nowhere? Not a chance. Somehow I just imagined a family vacation to France would be fun, including stuff like shopping, and maybe meeting new people. I just didn't even think we would spend the whole summer in a rented summer cottage in the middle of nowhere, where the only people you could possibly meet would probably be some old people with the obsession of getting as far away from cities as possible. And going shopping here? Not a chance. The nearest city is about two hour drive away. I think I can finally relate to Paris and Nicole in Simple Life.

I think my parents forgot on purpose to tell me where exactly in France we would be going. They probably knew I wouldn't have gone with them if I had known. I know I must sound really spoiled right now, but honestly, city life is more my thing. I mean, what else can you expect from a seventeen-year-old girl who's lived in Los Angeles her whole life?

That's what I just told my dad after he'd commented that I should take a bit more positive attitude, since I'd be stuck here the whole summer. I open my mouth to answer, but my little sister yells before I get to say anything,

"Mommy, are we there yet?"

My mum turns her head to look at me and my two little sisters sitting in the back seat of the car and smiles patiently, having heard the same question at least twenty times in the past hour. "Emilie, sweetie, just five more minutes."

Emilie crosses her arms with a pout. "That's what you said last time."

"Honey, the last time you asked was just a few minutes ago."

"Was not!"

Emilie's only five years old, which means she can be a bit annoying at times, especially if you have to sit with her in a crowded back seat for hours. My other sister, fourteen-year-old Nadia, is fast asleep next to us. Lucky girl.

"Okay, ladies, we're here!" my dad announces with a smile after parking the car in front of a wooden two-story house.

"Oh, Jack, it's beautiful!" my mum exclaims happily after taking a look at the house. Had I not been so against the whole 'we'll spend a family vacation in the middle of nowhere, when we could have gone to Paris or something' thing, I might have agreed with her.

I nudge Nadia awake, a bit jealous of the fact that the girl can sleep anywhere at any time. It's just so unfair and not normal! I've never been able to sleep in a car.

"Why'd you do that?" she mutters grumpily.

"Well, aren't you the sunshine of the day? We're here."

"Yeah, so?"

I just roll my eyes and get up from the car to see if this place is really as bad as I expect it to be.

~~~
Okay, maybe I was a bit wrong. This place is actually pretty and cozy. I don't know, I just thought we wouldn't even have electricity in this god-forsaken place. Well, we do.
This house has it all. The livingroom is big and nice, completed with a fireplace. There's also a kitchen, a dining room and three bathrooms. And we've all got our own rooms, which was a total surprise. Mine is the biggest. I've got a TV and even a Play Station. Great, maybe I can spend the whole summer becoming the master of Crash Team Racing. I just love that game.
Through my window you can see a nice view of the ocean. Heck, I didn't even know we were by the ocean before I asked my dad what the lake's name is. He just chuckled at my expression when he told me it was the Atlantic, and commented that I obviously hadn't paid much attention when he had told us about the place in the car.
So yeah, I'll probably survive the summer here. But I still think I'll be bored out of my mind.
~~~

After spending a few hours unpacking, I'm now sitting in front of my room's window, gazing at the beautiful ocean and thinking of taking a walk along the beach. Deciding it would be a nice way of killing time, I get up to leave, but then I see a red Ford driving past our house and parking in front of the summer cottage next to ours. I see a man and a woman in their fourties getting out from the car, and through my slightly open window I can hear then chatting in French. After them a cute boy jumps out of the car. He seems to be around the age of five, and I think he and Emilie could get along well. Even though they probably wouldn't understand each other, given the boy was obviously French. I doubt that would be a problem, though. As I'm giggling at the thought, another boy gets out from the car, and I think I forget to breathe for a moment.

He seems to be about the same age as me, with dark blonde hair. As he ruffles the smaller boy's hair, I can see he's got the most gorgeous smile.

"He's cute", Nadia's voice makes me jump, interrupting my thoughts of what the butterflies in my stomach must mean.

"Wh-who?" I turn to look at her with innocent eyes.

Nadia giggles and rolls her eyes. "Oh, come on, you were totally checking him out. And about time for you to start noticing there are boys in this planet..."

Oh, great. Nadia just loves to remind me of the fact that I've never had a boyfriend. Is it my fault I've never felt comfortable around the guys who've seemed interested in me? They've all been total jerks.

"Get out of my room", I smile at her sweetly. As I hear the door close behind her, I turn my gaze back to the boy. As he talks about something with his dad, he looks up and our eyes meet for a brief moment. He smiles at me slightly, making me blush, and walks into the house with his dad.

Maybe this summer wouldn't be that boring after all.
