~Part 16~
At lunchtime Sydney made her announcement to Francie and Carrie about no more blind dates.
“What was wrong with them?” Carrie asked, pausing in moving her French fry through the puddle of ketchup on her plate.
Sydney waited to take a bite of her hamburger. “One examined his image in every shop window we passed.”
Carrie giggled. “Jill picked him, didn’t she?”
Sydney gave her a backhanded wave. Placing blame for dreadful dates wasn’t her goal. She was grateful to her friends for trying to help her, but it was time for them to stop.
“I’ve never met a man who did that.”
“He told me he usually allowed an hour to get ready.” She knew another man who could look gorgeous in ten minutes, according to his son.
“So what was wrong with the others?” Francie asked, abandoning her lunch and staring at her best friend.
“Not all of the dates were awful, were they?” Carrie interrupted.
Sydney shrugged. She couldn’t tell them that she felt guilty accepting dates when she wanted to be with another man. How could she tell them about her feelings for Michael?
“I want to thank all of you. You’re dear friends, but no more. Okay?
“Okay, “ Francie said.
“I’ll agree, too, “ Carrie said. “On one condition. If I find a really great guy that I don’t want, of course, I get to send him your way.”
Sydney smiled and agreed, but she already knew a really great guy.

Flowers. Men hanging around at the reception area. What next? Michael wondered. Despite what she’d said about no more dates, he expected one of her blind dates to show up at the center with a violinist or a mariachi band to serenade her.
And what about him and her? She’d seemed tickled pink about calling them friends. That damn word was definitely beginning to annoy him.
Muttering under his breath at his own contradictory thoughts as he made his way to his office. He stopped in midstride, wondered if he was gasping. Wearing a sexy little, green number with skinny straps that just skimmed the tops of her knees, Sydney stood outside the staff lounge. She had great legs. Really great legs. He’d never notice before. Well, he’d never seen that much of them before.
“Hey.” She was deliberately trying to torture him, wasn’t she?
She strolled…sauntered on those stiletto heels toward him. “Do you need anything?”
Loaded question. How could she walk in those heels? “No,” he managed to say, and watched her get on the elevator.
“Have a good night.” She said before the elevator doors closed.

Despite the date and another man’s attention, Michael invaded her mind repeatedly. That’s why she tried so hard with Kyle, a bodybuilder type with curly dark hair. Still, because of an early-morning shift at the hospital, she insisted on going home by eleven.
Mr. Macho was agreeable. “That’s a good idea. I’ll come in for a while and…?” He let the last word come out on a raised note, an indication he expected more.
She lifted a hand to motion for him to stop. “I’m not inviting you up. I have to go to work early tomorrow, “she said to ease the rejection.
“Hey, baby, you look…”Cocky and slightly intoxicated, he grinned and spread his arms out as if taking in the whole picture.
“You are a hottie.”
As he lunged, she sidestepped him.
Standing on a step, charley charged forward, caught him before he fell on his face.
“I’ll get you a taxi, fella.”
“Nice move, “A familiar male voice said behind Sydney.
She released an unsteady laugh as she watched Michael amble toward her. “This is a …”
“Surprise, “he said with a self-deprecating grin.
“I was running and decided to see if you were home yet.” He released a short laugh. “That’s a lie.” His voice softened. “I’m here because I couldn’t stay away.”
Excitement and confusion filled her. He couldn’t stay away? While he helped Charley ease Kyle into the taxi, she fretted. Now what? Should she push for more about what he’d admitted? Should she say nothing?
“Did you mean what you said?” she asked when he joined her beneath the streetlight.
“That I was running?”
Despite the shadowed light, she saw the tease in his eyes.
“No, I can see you were.” She noted he was wearing a gray T-shirt , sweatpants and sneakers.
“I meant…never mind. Jake’s not home?”
“No. He’s with Alice tonight.” A smile tiled the corner of his mouth. “When he’s not home at night, I run.”
Unexpectedly he took her hand. “Want to walk with me?”
Something was different, was definitely happening between them. “Yes. She stopped trying to resist her feeling for him. This was more than a crush, a simple attraction.
He glanced down at her heels. “Can you walk in those?”
“Oh, sure. “ No way was she leaving him to go upstairs to change.
“Day after tomorrow, he and Alice are visiting her parents before she leaves the country.” In an easy casual move as if it was the most natural thing in the world to do, he brushed some strands of hair back from her face.
Warmth curled in her belly from his caress. Was he aware of how susceptible she was to his slightest touch? Was this, whatever” this” might be for him, happening because he stopped fighting his attraction?
“It’s hard when Jake’s not around, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
She smiled. “ I’m glad you took your run this way.”
“I told you I came this way deliberately.”
He’s not interested in marriage or being a daddy again, he’d said. He’d also told her that he wanted to kiss her again. Even as she knew he wouldn’t offer everything she longed for, she wanted him to come upstairs with her. She wanted him to be her lover. She couldn’t skip that chapter in her life if it meant spending time with him.
“I’m glad you did.”
Gently he skimmed knuckles across her cheek. “Syd, I could hurt you.”
“Why would you believe that?”
“You want things I’ll never consider, “he said even as he kissed her cheek, the bridge of her nose.
“Some people aren’t very good at making relationships work.”
But she wasn’t listening to the silent warning. Anticipation danced through her. She parted her lips, brought them close to his. A second passed before his mouth slanted across hers and took a deep taste.
Sydney strained against him, her arms around his back. This was what she’d been waiting for again. What she’d found with him was special. Romantic words were sung about this kind of moment. People waited a lifetime for it. Her heart beat harder as she made a life-changing decision. She was going to have whatever she could have with him.
She knew he wouldn’t give her what she needed but despite all the men she’d met, none of them measured up, none of them were him. Whether he was good for her or not didn’t seem to matter. Fate or Cupid, or whatever force controlled an attraction, had chosen him for her and the feeling he stirred was unlike any other.
For a moment longer, Michael held her to him. “I should leave. Now, “ he insisted, but didn’t let her go. The humor in his voice made her smile. “While I still can.”
It was only then she remembered she stood outside her building that a few people were passing by. Tenderly she caressed his jaw, wanted to plead with him to stay. Instead, she leaned into him again; she kissed him hard but quickly, then turned away. For tonight let him think about that. She would.

ok seriously. michael's a jerk. i can understand that he thinks he's not the answer for syd, but the fact that he expects her to be with him, knowing that it won't lead to anything! that's retarded! even if she wasn't on a husband hunt, that would be horrible. and it bothers me that syd's giving in to him. if i were her, that would be a huge turn-off.
