Thanks for the PM

Turning, he stared at a calendar with cute photos of puppies that was pinned to a small cork bulletin board. Sydney had scribbles in names to designate birthdays. Today’s date bore a different notation. Dr. Kem, 9:00am.

A full second passed before his mind clicked with what he’d read. Gina Kem was an ob/gyn. Damn. She was there for more tests. Why hadn’t she told him? The last thing she needed was to be alone.

ooohhh!!!! he;s gonna rush over there for her!!! go michael go!

yeah, i guess it could be weird to have your lover as your ob/gyn. has she told him about the possibility of the endo? i don't think so.

Happy Alias Day. :P

Here's another chapter. Thanks for R & R and talk to you soon. CJ

~ Part 22~

Sydney had finished dressing. She felt sick with nausea from nerves despite Dr. Kem’s assurances.

“Don’t worry, “she’d said, touching her shoulder before she’d left her.

If only that was possible. She strolled from the doctor’s waiting room to the building’s exit. She always understood patients’ impatience when they had to wait for the results of lab work. The unknown was frightening. Managing a strained smile for the doctor’s nurse, she said goodbye and opened the door.

That’s when she saw Michael.

Standing on the sidewalk, he wore a frown. But he looked wonderful…unshaven, in last night’s clothes. He hadn’t gone home. He’d forgotten everything except her.

“Hi.” She brought forth a smile. “Did you have the coffee?”

“I found it. And your note.”

He’d come for her, to be with her when she’d needed him. Teetering on the edge of emotions, she worked for a calmness she didn’t feel.

“How did you know I was here?”

“The calendar. What did Gina Kem say?”

She forced her brightest smile. “She had no answers, yet.”

He held her close. “Don’t expect the worst.”

“Really, I’m not…”

“Don’t. I know how you feel about family.”

She gave in. Her heart felt heavy. No longer could she dodge the possibility that she’d have a life without a child of her own.

“I wouldn’t be the first woman who’s never had children, “she said with as much courage she could muster.

He waited for her to look up again, ran his hands down her arms, then as if he needed more contact, he gathered her to him.

“I wish I could make this easier for you.”

“You are, just by being here with me. Now.”

She was making a difference in his life. Just seeing her gentled his mood, he realized as he looked into her eyes.

She flashed that million-dollar smile at him.” What?”

“I have one more appointment, “he said to her. “Meet me at my place. “ He kissed her lips and pressed his key in her palm.

“You smell wonderful, “he murmured in her ear.

Her smile widened.” I’ll be there. Waiting.”

Sydney stared at the key, tried not to make too much of the gesture, but how could she not? Was he changing his mind about a short-term relationship, about no strings? Was that really possible?

She spent the next few minutes planning a romantic evening. She stopped at the market, then headed home. She showered and changed into a slick black dress with spaghetti straps and matching sandaled heels. She grabbed a bluesy CD and a bag filled with the makings for dinner.

At Michael’s, she was going to turn on music, put some flowers and candles on the table for that romantic ambiance.

Smiling over how orderly he was, she easily found the right pots and pans, then took down ocean-blue plates, perfect dishware for her dinner.

“The Wateford dishes are in that cabinet, “a feminine voice said suddenly.

Sydney swung around. “I’m Dorothy.”

“Sydney, “she said, and moved forward for the woman‘s hand.

A few minutes later:

Michael opened the door, smelled wonderful aromas, heard music, then saw her dancing around the dining room table, a fork in her hand.

Trailing her was Dorothy, waving a spatula in the air. Two voices, a robust, sexy, musical one in tune, and a gruff feminine one that was slightly off-key were belting out an upbeat song about some guy’s kiss.

Michael paused in the doorway and offered well-deserved applause.

Eyes wide, with a deer-in-the-headlights look, Dorothy tucked the spatula behind her back. Through still looking embarrassed, she recovered quickly and laughed.

“Good night, Sydney.“ She reached Michael at the doorway. “ Dr. Vaughn.“

As deadpan as he could manage, Michael held his hand out. “May I have your microphone?“

She laughed again and set the spatula on his palm. “ I suppose you‘ll never let me hear the end of this.“

He grinned back.“ Never.“

“What a great lady, “ Sydney said when the door closed behind Dorothy.

“Sounds as if you were a hit, too.“

He thought she was unbelievable. He‘d never known a woman who brightened a room so easily.

She craned her neck to see what was behind his back. “Are those flowers for me?“ She asked, a big smile on her face.

“For you.“

“Ohh, I love purple irises, “ she said.” They‘re beautiful. “Tell me.” Her expression turned deadly serious.” Dr. Vaughn, are you trying to get me into bed?“

She looked stunning, slinky, seductive in her black dress that clung to her. He followed the curves of her breasts, her waist, her hips. He found it enticing.

“Is it working?“

She raised the flowers, inhaled their fragrance. Over the blossoms, her dark eyes sparkled with a smile at him.

“Definitely.“

“You‘re amazing.“ He took her into his arms. “ And something smells great.“

“Shrimp stuffed with crabmeat.“

“ No, “ he whispered in her ear. “You do. I decided you owe me.“

Leaning her body into his, she slanted a knowing look at him.“ Owe you what?“

Head back, she gave his lips room to explore her throat.” So what do I owe you?“

“Waking up together,“ He had missed that, wanted to be beside her during predawn light.

“You cheated me.“

“We‘ll have to fix that.“

Idly he fingered the tiny straps of her dress and smiled.” My thought, too. Will that dinner keep?“

With a thumb, he nudged off fist one and then the other thin straps from her shoulders. The little black dress fell to the floor and pooled at her feet.

Staring in her eyes, he brushed a knuckle against her flesh above the lacy edge of her bra.

“What a great invention.“

Sydney laughed.“ Think so?“

“I love your laugh.“ The gnawing need for her surprised him. It went beyond a sexual need.

“Your smile, “ he said honestly. “The smell of your skin.“

All day he‘ d thought about her smile, even the sound of her voice.

“ I missed you,” he said against her hair.

“I missed you, too.“

He strove for gentleness, but her mouth was on his, carrying a message that matched his own desperate need. Filling himself with her taste, he drew her down to the rug with him.

Beneath his touch, her body heated. Beneath his mouth, her skin quivered. His pulse pounding, he shifted his body so he could see her eyes. In the shadowy darkness of the room, they looked so soft, so trusting and so loving.

He‘d do his best not to hurt her. He made the silent promise. With passion clawing at him, he buried his face against the side of her neck and found in her his serenity.

She made him want more than he‘ d ever wanted, love…promises. Far-fetched possibilities. In his family, promises weren‘t kept. Love wasn‘t something that was said or felt. He wanted to make them to Sydney, but he didn‘t know how.

He shifted, took a deep calming breath, then raised himself up on his arms to relieve her of his weight.

“Don‘ t leave.“ Her words came out on a whisper.

He chuckled. “ Leave?“ “I can barely move.“

Laughing, she coiled her arms around his neck. “Then don‘t.

He stayed, served her coffee and fruit in bed, made her laugh when he fed her pieces of cut apples, the only fruit he had in the kitchen.

Her laughter bubbled out again and rippled on the air when he threw her over his shoulder and took her into the shower with him.

Fun. She‘d had fun. During the light-hearted morning, they’d laughed like teenagers totally infatuated with each other.

Standing in his kitchen, Sydney recalled every second. With the notes of a bluesy saxophone wafting on the air through the sunny room, she chopped a green pepper for an omelets.

In the middle of the kitchen table stood the vase of flowers he‘d brought her. She‘d never expected him to bring her flowers, to romance her. Never had she thought that one day he‘d take her hand or kiss her, much less be the man in her life.

She smiled at the flowers again.

“So what goes into an omelets in the Bristow household?“

Sydney glanced away from chopping the green pepper. Unshaven, his hair tousled, he looked sexy to her.

“Anything you want in it.“ Head bent, he stood bathes in the morning sunlight at the kitchen doorway while he buttoned his shirt.

“What do you like?” She asked. “ Onions, green peppers, mushrooms, cheese, tomatoes?“

“Okay.“ He stepped up close behind her, placed a hand on her belly.

“You‘re incredibly easy to please.“

“I‘m feeling mellow.“

“I wonder why.“

Gently he nibbled at her ear. “I can‘t imagine.“

He did look tranquil, satisfied, she thought, watching as he straddled a kitchen chair.

“You have a message, “ she said with a nod at the answering machine.

“Nothing urgent.“

Because his beeper received hospital emergencies, he wouldn‘t be concerned. But Sydney couldn’t help asking.

“Aren‘t you curious?“

He laughed and stretched an arm out to hear the message. “Are you one of those people who‘ll break a leg jumping over furniture to answer a phone?“

“Fraid so, “ Sydney admitted.” I also shook Christmas presents when I was young.“

Smiling he pushed the button.

“Michael, it’s your father. It seems we’ll be playing phone tag again. I’ve taken a room closer to your office.”

Sydney slanted a look at him.

Staring at the floor, he listened to the phone number his father had left but didn’t write it down.
