Chapter 20
The week passed by quickly, seeming to go faster with the fun they had together. Michael ended up getting a B when he got his test back on Friday, which he was very excited about. His happiness fell, however when he saw Sydney had gotten an A+.
“Were you always this smart?” He whispered.
“Possibly.” She smiled, teasing him. She was proud that he had done so well and knew he could do better on the next test.

“Michael! You came!” Nadia cheered, opening the door for him and pulling him inside that Saturday afternoon.
“Well, I said I would.” Michael smiled, surveying the room. There were a few balloons, a stack of presents, a few moms, and about ten little girls scattered across the living room. Sydney was nowhere in sight.
“Hey guys! Michael’s here!” Nadia told her friends, quickly rattling off her friends’ names.
“Ew! He probably has cooties!” Bridget (or was it Samantha?) commented. Nadia proceeded to tell her otherwise while Michael wandered over to the other adults. They introduced themselves politely, pointing out which child was theirs.
“And you are?’ Bridget/Samantha’s mom asked.
“Michael Vaughn.” He smiled. “I’m Sydney’s… friend.” He decided to say friend because he wasn’t sure if they were boyfriend/girlfriend or not. He would like to be, but he had to ask Sydney first. He wondered where she was, and why she wasn’t instantly trying to pull him away from her little sister.
“Ok, girls! Time for some games!” One of the moms called out, gathering the kids to the middle of the room, where the coffee table was pushed aside.

After sneaking away from the party, Michael found his way up the stairs towards Sydney’s room. He wondered why she wasn’t down at the party and why her dad wasn’t home either.
“Syd?” He knocked on her door, hearing no response. “Syd?” He called a bit louder.
“Go away.” He heard a muffled voice from inside.
“Syd, what’s wrong?” He asked, still not going to open the door.
“I said go away, Michael.” She replied harshly. He was intrigued on why she was being so mean when yesterday she had been so friendly towards him.
“Syd, you can talk to me.”
“Please… Michael… Please leave.” Sydney pleaded weakly.
“I’m coming in, ok?” Michael rested his hand on the doorknob, waiting for her reply. When she gave none, he slowly opened the door to find her hiding under her covers in the middle of her bed.
“God, why can’t you just leave me alone?” Sydney said, pulling the covers over her head and looking at him. He could see her cheeks and eyes were puffy and red as if she had been crying.
“What happened Syd?” Michael sat on the bed next to her. “Why are you crying?”
“I don’t wanna talk about it.”
