Chapter 1

Sydney Bristow grunted as she lifted her extremely heavy duffle bag up on her shoulder while walking up the three flights of stairs, all the while wondering why exactly she had chosen a room on the third floor. Her father had wondered the same thing when he had to lug her heavy computer equipment up to her dorm room the previous year, but she had assured him that with her new laptop, that problem would be remedied. Unfortunately, she failed to remember that clothing and other necessary items for surviving life in the dorms were also heavy.

She dug her hand down into her jeans pocket as she reached the landing on the third floor. To her horror, she found no key. Cursing herself for losing a key she had received no more than three minutes earlier, she began checking her other pockets, praying she didn’t have to walk back down three flights of steps with her heavy bags.

She continued to search as she slowly made her way to room 333, but she found nothing. Much to her relief, she saw that the door was open a crack and had never been more thankful that her roommate (who also happened to be her little sister) was there. She shoved open the door, her mouth hanging open, prepared to make a joke or a comment, but found the room empty.

She groaned as she dropped her bags down onto the empty bed. Her sister was a moron. Before she could think another thought there was a squeal from behind her. Sydney spun around to see her sister grinning and drying her hands off on her jeans. “Syd! Oh my god, I’ve never been so happy to see you!” Nadia squealed as she threw her arms around her sister, hugging her tightly. “I’ve missed you so, SO much!”

“Nad, it’s been four days,” Sydney laughed. “And you left the door open.

“I just went to the bathroom,” Nadia rolled her eyes. “Syd, everyone here hates me!” she pouted.

“What? They can’t hate you!”

“They do!” she whined. “Everyone in my freshmen little group thingie hates me. They won’t talk to me and neither will any of the other girls in this stupid hall. I’ve just been sitting in here alone for FOUR days! I hate college,” she frowned.

“Oh Nadia, it will get better once your classes start tomorrow, I promise. We’ll talk about it, but first I need to find my key!” she groaned.

“You mean this?” Nadia asked as she bent over and picked up a gold key from the floor.

Sydney laughed nervously and took it. “That would be it. Come help me get the rest of my felgercarb outta my car, okay?”

“Jeez, am I your sister or your slave?” Nadia groaned as she followed her elder sister out of their room.

“Both,” Sydney laughed, and then she groaned upon seeing Nadia had left their door hanging wide open. “Shut it and take your key with you!” Sydney scolded.

“Whatever,” Nadia rolled her eyes.

“If something of mine gets stolen, I’ll have Mom force you to pay for it,” she warned.

“Fine, fine, I’ll shut the door, sheesh,” Nadia sighed. After shutting the door, Nadia walked quickly to catch up to her sister. When she did, she linked her arm through Sydney’s and rested her head on her shoulder as they walked.

Sydney looked down at Nadia curiously. In all of her 20 years (granted only 18 of those were with Nadia), she had never known her sister to be so clingy. In high school, Nadia had been one of the ‘popular’ ones, but maybe that was the problem. Being popular meant she always had someone around to talk to or gossip with. If things were as Nadia said, that no one liked her or spoke to her, then she didn’t have anyone. It wasn’t that Sydney minded; she didn’t. She was glad that she and her sister had grown progressively closer in the two years since she had gone off to college, leaving her back at home with their parents. They had grown close to the point where they were actually best friends, something Sydney had never imagined back when she was a somewhat geeky high school senior and her sister was practically ruling the school (socially anyway). She didn’t mind, she was just concerned.

“Ohhh, you’re so lucky that you get to park so close... and have a car,” Nadia groaned when they reached Sydney’s car, which was parked out on the street in front of their dorm. “Mom and Dad love you...,” she muttered.

“No, they love you too, just not enough to replace your car when you wrecked it,” Sydney laughed as she opened up her trunk and handed a large suitcase off to her sister.

“I still maintain that that telephone poll came out of nowhere!”

Sydney laughed and rolled her eyes, “Surrrrre.”

“Whatever,” Nadia rolled her eyes. “Have I mentioned I’m glad you’re here?”

“A few times, yes,” Sydney laughed softly. Her sister looked rather sheepish. “Oh Nad, was it really that bad?”

Nadia nodded and looked down towards her feet as they headed back to their room weighted down with more of Sydney’s belongings. “They just don’t... like me.”

“Which is so rare for you,” Sydney said with a grin.

“Ha. Ha,” she rolled her eyes. “I’m serious.”

“Sorry,” Sydney told her softly.

“I can’t figure it out either. I tried to be, you know, me, and they just ignored me. Then a bunch of them went off and formed this little group and I think they were laughing at me. I dunno... and I know they had a party last night that I wasn’t invited too. So, I just sat in the room... watched TV.... ate candy... oh god, I was you!” she exclaimed in horror.

“Oh, you’re so freakin’ funny, Nad,” Sydney rolled her eyes.

“Sorry,” she laughed. “But you gotta admit I do have a point.”

“If you’re referring to the fact that I’d rather watch TV on a Friday night instead of drinking myself into a stupor like some people, then I suppose you’re right,” Sydney said pointedly.

“Oh, OH!” Nadia gasped in offense. “That was one time.”

“Yeah,” Sydney giggled, “I know.”

I love fluff.

Wonder why the others don't like Nadia.
She will have to make all new friends when classes start.
It's good that she and Sydney get along. Sydney can
help her with all the little things not written about college.
