Monday, the first day back for the semester, was a very hectic day for Sydney. She had a nine thirty class that didn’t end until a quarter to eleven, at which point she had to sprint back to her dorm to change into her ballet class attire and make it to the gym by eleven a.m. She made it with three minutes to spare and hung her bag over the bar in the dance room while she stripped off her sweats. A moment later, as she was putting on her ballet shoes, she heard, “Hey Sydney... you’re in this class?”
Her head snapped towards the door and she burst out laughing when she saw Michael Vaughn in track pants and a t-shirt, tugging off his winter coat. “You’re in this class?!” she asked in disbelief.
He nodded. “I needed a creative expression core class.”
“And singing doesn’t count?” Sydney asked.
“Only counts for two credits; I need four,” he explained.
“Oh,” she laughed. Then she looked down at his feet and burst out laughing. “OH GOD, are you wearing tights?!!?”
He went slightly pink. “They’re not tights...”
“Yes they are! Oh god, you’re wearing tights!” she laughed as she fell over and clutched the dance bar for support in her hysterics.
“Would you shh!” he hissed as he looked around nervously.
“Are you wearing a leotard, too?!” she giggled.
“No, I am not!” he insisted. She looked skeptical. He pulled up his white t-shirt to reveal nothing but a very toned stomach.
“That’s slightly better,” she giggled as she stood up properly. “Please tell me the tights were a bet.”
“I am glad to say that this class, as well as the tights were a bet,” he told her quietly.
She giggled. “Does wonders for your dignity, doesn’t it? OH! I’m so glad I got a cell phone camera for Christmas,” she grinned.
“DON’T!” he threatened. She giggled again. By that time the rest of their class (all female) had filed in the room and were eyeing Michael suspiciously. Even the teacher was looking at him strangely as she introduced herself.
“Well, I’m glad to see we have at least one male class member this year,” she said. Sydney stifled a snort and Michael went pink. “Now if you could all pair up we’ll get started.”
Michael immediately grabbed Sydney’s hand and she looked up at him in shock. “What are you doing?”
“You’re my pair- I mean partner,” he said nervously.
“Uh huh,” she said as she folded her arms over her chest. “And... you’ve taken ballet before?”
“Hell no,” he said quickly.
“This.... should be interesting,” Sydney sighed.
“Have you?” he raised an eyebrow.
She nodded. “Seven years between elementary school, middle school and high school.”
“Wow,” he said. “So why the hell are you in Intro to Ballet class?”
“It’s an easy A,” she told him.
“Right,” he laughed as he looked around the classroom at the stretching girls.
“You gonna make it?” she asked him quietly.
“Me? Oh yeah... I’m cool,” he said rather unconvincingly.
“Mmhmm, you know wearing those tights wouldn’t really hide much, so you better be,” she said. He looked down at her in shock and noticed she was looking away and blushing fully.
“Now, if you would all please follow my instruction, we can begin,” the teacher told them.

After pathetically stumbling his way through his first ballet class while Sydney laughed at him the entire time, Michael’s ego was definitely bruised, but he was still determined to ask Sydney out, especially since she was right there, packing up her dance things in her back.
“Hey, um, Syd,” Michael began rather squeakily.
She looked over her shoulder and smiled, “yeah?”
“Well, um, I was just wondering if, um, you.... could tutor me,” he said, then cringed inside realizing that not only did he sound like a moron, but that wasn’t what he wanted to say at all.
“Tutor you? In what?!” she laughed.
“Dance,” he said weakly.
She laughed. “You mean you’re not dropping the class after today?”
“No, can’t. I need to finish up my core,” he told her.
“And... you can’t take drawing or something? Oh, no, I get it; you don’t want to back out of the bet. You need to seem manly in front of your friends,” she managed with a straight face but then started to giggle.
Michael turned away. “Never mind,” he muttered.
“No, wait. I’m sorry. I’ll help you if you want, though I don’t know how to help you exactly,” she told him.
“Well, um, maybe you could help me with the stuff we did today?” he suggested.
“Uh, sure, you wanna work on pliés?” she asked. He shrugged. “Well, my guess is if you don’t at least come close, you’ll fail.”
“Then let’s work on those,” he said quickly.
“Okay,” she laughed. Then, she began to demonstrate for him. After a few incorrect attempts, he became so frustrated, that his tries became even more desperate resulting in him losing his balance and falling over completely.
Sydney burst out laughing, but rushed over and knelt down at his side. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I think,” he grumbled as he sat up and rubbed his elbow tenderly. Then, he looked over at Sydney who was grinning and still snickering slightly. Since she was crouched down beside him, there were only a few inches between their faces. Impulsively, Michael leaned forward and quickly brushed his lips against hers.
Sydney was stunned and her eyes widened in shock. Michael Vaughn had just kissed her, her first kiss in quite some time. He was beginning to look panicked and she relaxed her face into a smile. “Wow, I, uh, never thought I’d be kissed by a guy wearing tights,” she said softly.
He groaned as he blushed and went to climb off the floor but she put a soft hand on his arm holding him down. He looked over at him cautiously, but she just smiled at him for a moment, before climbing off the floor herself and walking over to her bag. “I think we’ve done enough practice for today... besides, I have another class to get to and I’d kinda like a shower.”
“Oh... right, sure,” he said as he stood up, wondering what had just happened. “Hey Syd!” he called after her before she could leave the dance studio. She turned and looked at him. “You, um, wanna have dinner with me tonight... in the cafeteria?”
“Sure,” Sydney said quickly, recalling what her sister had said. “Five thirty?”
