Needle Pulling Thread

... ooooh very nice ... and as a chronically ill person myself I can only say I know what she's goinf through and you nailed it - especially with the constant dread she feels ...

They were all looking at me, trying to think of something to say, but still; nothing.

“HELLO? I’m not dead, yet!”

I threw my napkin down and ran from the table. I heard my mom let out a sob, and heard Vaughn chase after me.

That one was harsh and a lot to take in  poor Sydney :(

Wonderful update... Sorry I didn't review the previous update but I didn't receive the PM :angelic:

 cookie

Man, I'm on a role today. Four updates for four different fics. I think I need a hobby... This is a very dialogue oriented chapter, but it's not as angsty as the others. It's actually kind of funny. Hope you like it!

Chapter 5

I turned onto my other side feeling something pressing up behind me, and came face to face with Vaughn. He smiled.

“Sleep well?”

“Relatively speaking,” I said with a slight smile.

He smiled, looking somewhat uncomfortable with the fact I was joking about my sickness.

“Vaughn…”

“I know, I know. It’s just hard to joke about it; hard to come to terms with,” he said rubbing his forehead.

“I know. I’m sorry,” I said, reaching for his hand.

“What do you have to be sorry about?” he asked.

“For putting you through this.”

“Syd, we’ve been over this. I want to be here; I need to be here,” he said, squeezing my hand

I gave him the are-you-sure-about-that look.

“I promise,” he told me, kissing my forehead. I closed my eyes, trying to savor the moment.

“Things are going to get worse before they get better. You know that, right?’

“You don’t know that!”

“Yes, I do.”

“Syd, nobody can predict that. The doctors can’t even predict that,” he said. I didn’t respond. There was no point to argue about something so stupid. We were both quiet. How I wish we could back to a time where we were both happy, but wishing would do me no good. I had to accept and come to terms with what my life was.

I turned my head away from him. “I know it can’t happen, but I wish things would go back to the way they were, “I whispered wistfully, while staring up at the white ceiling.

“Oh come on, are you scared?”

“Yes Sydney, I am terrified, and notice that I am using no sarcasm in my voice what-so-ever.”

“Vaughn, seriously, what’s he going to do?”

“Possibly shoot me in the face!”

“Is my dad really that scary?”

“Yes, he is really that scary, and I’d rather him not catch me in your bed.”

“It’s not like we’re going to do anything,” I said suggestively. “You stayed in my dorm like all year. What is so different about this?”

“Um, possibly the fact that your dad is in the same house with us!”

“Fine, I’ll just stay here all night by myself,” I said, lowering myself to my bed, and taking my childhood teddy bear and hugging it tightly.

“Oh my god,” Vaughn said. “Don’t do that, please, Syd.”

“Come on, Vaughn, live a little!”

“That’s what I want to do- live, and if your dad catches us you realize you will be losing me forever.”

“Well, I couldn’t live without my Vaughn, so I guess we’re just going to have to make sure that doesn’t happen,” I told him, wrapping my arms around his waist.

“Oh, fine,” he said giving up.

“It’s going to be like a sleepover,” I squealed.

He quickly put his hand over my mouth. “Not so loudly.” I laughed into his hand.

“Ugh, gross, I’ve got Sydney slobber on m now,” he told me, wiping his hands on his jeans.

“And you have a problem with Sydney slobber?” I said in mock outrage.

“Oh, of course not.”

“Good. Now quickly go and get your stuff for our little sleepover. Hurry up,” I said pushing him out of my room.

“Yah, yah, I’m going,” he said, walking away dragging his feet.

“Look a little more excited,” I yelled after him.

“What was that, Sydney?” my dad called from downstairs.

“Nothing, dad.”

Vaughn gave me a look of death. “Go on,” I whispered.

This time he walked away with a little skip in his step. I practically fell on the floor with laughter, but was able to shut myself in my room before it got too out of hand.

Tonight was going to be fun. How I loved torturing him.

Vaughn made it back to my house at 10:00. I quickly snuck him into my room.

“Wow, I feel like a spy or something,” I said, as I shut the door quickly behind me

“Well, screw being a lawyer; you should be a spy!”

“Exactly!”

I walked over to my bed. “So, what do you want to do? It’s only 10:00.”

“I don’t know. What do you want to do?”

“I don’t know. What do you want to do?”

“What are six, Syd?”

“On the inside.”

“That’s not hard to believe.”

“Anyway, I’ve got to take a shower. I won’t be long.”

“And what do I do if your dad happens to come in.”

“Make something up. Tell him you came to pick something up.”

“Oh my god, we’re so going to get caught,” Vaughn whined.

“We’ll be fine. Stop worrying,” I said, throwing my pillow at him.

I was able to take a fairly quick shower for being the slowest person in the world. I walked out into my room clad only a smell, white towel I strutted over to my drawer, completely ignoring the fact that Vaughn was sitting at my desk.

“Sydney!” he yelled, covering his eyes with the magazine in his hand.

“What,” I said, squeezing out my hair.

“Clothes .On .Now!”

“Oh, come on! It’s not like it’s nothing you haven’t already seen.”

“I know, but your dad is downstairs,” he whined.

“Fine,” I laughed, grabbing my pajamas, and heading into the bathroom I changed, and walked back out to see he was changed, too.

“Oh my god, who’s pajamas are those?” I laughed.

“Mine,” he said, defensively.

“Where’d you get them? Your grandma?”

“Yes, actually.” I snorted with laughter.

“What’s wrong with them?” he asked, looking down.

“Well, the fact that it’s summer in L.A, and you’re going to die of the heat in those, and the fact that they have ducks on them.”

“Okay, fine! I’ve never worn them before, but they were the only ones I had that would be appropriate.”

“You’re such a freak,” I said walking over to him.

“Your freak, though.”

“Yes, you’re my freak,” I said, kissing him.

“I’m tired,” I told him.” Sleep?”

“Yah, me too,” he said, pulling back the covers, and allowing me to crawl in first. He came in after me. I pulled the comforter up to my chin.

“Ugh, I forgot about your obsession to smoother yourself in blankets,” he groaned.

“It’s not an obsession; it’s a habit.”

“Whatever. I’m going to die of heat, you know that?”

“Now who’s fault would that be?”

“Fine, fine,” he said, peeling of his shirt.

“Oh my god, could that be skin?” I said mocking him.

“You’re mean to me.”

“Only because I love you.”

“You better. Night, Syd,” he said, kissing the back of my neck.

“Night,” I mumbled.

Our solitude was soon interrupted, though.

“Sydney, it sounded like you were talking to yourself? What the hell is this?” my dad’s voice boomed from the doorway.

We both immediately bolted upright from our sleeping position. Vaughn looked like he was going to be sick. He jumped out of the bed, but I could tell he instantly regretted it, considering he was shirtless. I had to fight the urge not to laugh at the whole situation.

Quickly Vaughn pulled the shirt over his head, leaving his hair sticking up at an odd angle in an adorable way.

“Get the hell out of here!” my dad yelled.

My mother and sister both appeared in the doorway with the same amused expression on their faces.

I’ve never seen Vaughn run so fast in my life. My dad followed him at the same pace. My mother and sister also followed. I jumped from bed, and saw my dad chasing Vaughn out of the house and down the street all the way to his house.

Nadia smiled over at me.

“Oh, Sydney, you’re definitely my daughter,” my mother said, putting her arm around my shoulder. All three of us burst out laughing together as we watched my dad and Vaughn.
