Recap:

Vaughn turned to him. “She said Lily and then got all teary.” He turned to me. “Sydney…what about Lily?”

Chapter 8

I gasped. “Jonna just called. She said…she said they brought Lily to the hospital earlier because her lips were turning blue and she was having trouble breathing while she was asleep. They’re running tests now,” I managed to say and then grabbed Vaughn’s shirt and started to sob violently.

He looked up at Dad and Dixon before moving to sit with me on the couch.
“I have to go. I have to go to her. Now.” I cried out.
“Okay, Sydney. Go get some things packed. I’ll have a plane ready within the hour. Vaughn, will you be going too?”

“I’d like to…”
“Fine. Take Sydney home. I don’t want her driving now.” He nodded.
Dixon cleared his throat. “I’ll have a cover story ready for everyone. I hope everything turns out okay,” he said gently, handing me a tissue.

I calmed down enough to wipe my face off and walk out of the office normally. Vaughn took my arm and guided me to my desk so I could gather my belongings and then we headed to his place for him to pack and then to mine. Half an hour later we were at the airfield with a plane standing by.
“Sydney, she’ll be all right,” my dad said. “I’ll be out in a few days as planned. Take care,” he hugged me before I boarded.

~~~
I clung to Vaughn the entire flight. I was terrified of what we’d find when we got to Geneva. I think he was just as scared but trying to stay strong for me. It seemed like two days passed before we finally landed and took a taxi to the hospital. By the time we got there it was almost three in the afternoon.
Keith was waiting in the lobby for us since I had called him from the taxi. “KEITH,” I cried, rushing up to him. He pulled me into a hug.
“She’s okay, Syd. She’s okay now.” I nodded.
“Where is she? I want to see her. What’s wrong with her?”
“Follow me. The doctor wanted to wait until you arrived to talk to us.”
I grabbed Vaughn’s hand and we followed Keith to the pediatric floor and into room six. Lily was asleep in the bed. She looked so little and fragile lying there alone.
I choked back a sob as I rushed to the bed and sat on the edge, stroking her hair and face. “Oh, baby. Mommy’s here now. Mommy’s here.” I felt Vaughn’s hand on my shoulder. “Daddy’s here too. We’re here for you, baby.” Keith and Jonna stood to the side, watching us and waiting to hear what the doctor had to say.
Someone cleared their throat and we turned around. “Ms. Bristow, Mr. Vaughn. I’m Dr. Aubert.” We said hello and shook his hand. “I have the results of your daughter’s tests. It turns out Lily has asthma, which can be easily controlled. Humidity is a trigger in her case. Last night, it was unusually humid here. I can safely say there was a higher humidity level last night than her entire 22 months alive. As a result, her breathing became hindered and luckily Mrs. Erikkson caught it in time. Your daughter is completely fine and we have medication for her. One medicine is daily. It’s a pill to strengthen her respiratory system and keep the asthma in control. The second is an inhaler for use when she needs the extra control.”
I let out a sigh of relief. “Is this something she’ll have for the rest of her life?”
“It’s hard to say right now because she is so young. It is entirely possible she may grow out of it. The good thing is that it is controllable and she will be fine. You can take her home today. She’ll be groggy for a day or so until her body adjusts to the medicine but once that happens, she’ll be her normal self.”
“Thank you, Doctor.” Vaughn shook his hand. We looked at each other and embraced, happy this was only a scare and Lily would be fine.
“I’m so sorry you had to deal with this, Jonna,” I said, looking up from Vaughn’s chest.
“It was nothing, Sydney. I was worried as well. She’s like a second child to me, you know that.”
“Well thank you both, anyway. If the medication is more than you want to deal with, Vaughn and I will discuss bringing her back home.”
Jonna waved her hand. “Sydney, it’s not a big deal. If you need her to stay here, taking care of her is not going to be any harder. Why don’t we all discuss this later? You’re here for a few days anyway, no?”
We nodded. “Why don’t you two go home, get some rest? We’ll stay here until they discharge her and then take a cab back to your place?”
“No, take my car,” Keith pressed keys into my hand. “We drove separately. I’m parked in the garage, level four, row B. It’s the green car.”
“Thanks, Keith. We’ll see you later,” I said, hugging them tightly.
“We’re glad she’s all right, Sydney,” he said in return and they left. As soon as they were gone, I collapsed into Vaughn’s arms again.
“Syd…she’s okay. She’s going to be okay,” he said gently, rubbing my back.
“I just…I was so scared. Vaughn,” I said, looking up into his eyes. “We should have been here for her. She needs us.” He didn’t respond because right then Lily started to fuss a little and we rushed to the side of her bed. Her eyes opened and she blinked a few times before her gaze settled on us.
“Momma,” she croaked, holding her arms out. I scooped her up quickly and held her gently, afraid she’d break.
“Hi, baby. Are you feeling better?”
“Sweepy,” she whined.
“I know, sweetheart. You had a long night. Daddy’s here. Want to see Daddy?” She nodded against my chest and I passed her over to Vaughn.
“Hey, cutie. You scared us, you know that?” Her response was to put her head on his shoulder. “Aww, close your eyes if you want to, Lily. It’s okay.” We watched as her eyes fluttered shut once more.
“Poor kid,” I commented. “I’m going to find the doctor and see when we can leave.” Vaughn nodded and sat on the bed with his sleeping daughter in his arms to wait. He gently fingered her soft curls.
“Lily, baby,” he whispered. “I’m so glad you are okay. I love you so much.” She gently shifted and mumbled “Daddy.”
“Hey…we can go check her out now,” I said, coming back into the room. Twenty minutes later we were on our way to the parking garage and heading back to the Erikkson’s.
“Hey, Vaughn…since my Dad’s coming too, do you think you’ll mind sharing a room with me? If it is a problem, I’ll stay on the couch,” I offered.
He smiled. “We’ll be fine, Syd. And I think Lily needs to stay with us too.”
“I agree.” It’s funny how things changed between us once he found out about Lily.
We arrived at the house and everyone fawned over Lily for a little while before sitting down to an early dinner. Everyone retired to their rooms early that evening due to pure exhaustion from the previous events. I carried her to the guest room that Vaughn and I were sharing and placed her in the middle of the bed. We slid around her and simply watched her breathing for a while before shutting our own eyes.
~~~

“Potty. Daddy. Potty.” A small voice, followed by tiny fists pounding on Vaughn’s arm woke him around one in the morning. “Potty!”
“What’s up, Lily?” he said, half asleep.
“Potty!” She insisted again. His eyes flew open at that word.

“What?!” He choked out before glancing at his daughter and sensing her urgent need. Quickly glancing at Sydney, who was dead asleep, he decided not to wake her and gently lifted his daughter out of the bed. As soon as he set her on the floor she took off running down the hall to the bathroom and stopped in front of a small training potty on the floor.

Rubbing his head, he realized he had no idea what to do but took his best guess. Kneeling down, he helped Lily remove her pajama pants and PullUps diaper and sat her down on the potty.
“I hope this is what I am supposed to do, kiddo, and I’m not derailing your training.” He said out loud, more to himself. Looking around, he noticed a box of baby wipes on the counter and some kiddie soap on the sink.

“How are you doing there, baby? You okay?” He asked her. She nodded.
“I done!” She announced a few seconds later and stood up, moving toward the door.
Vaughn grabbed her quickly. “Hey there. Before you go anywhere, you clean up after you go potty.” He reached for the box of baby wipes and cleaned her up before lifting her to the sink to show her how to wash her hands. At a loss for what to do with the contents of the potty, he first deposited Lily back in the guest room and came back to the bathroom to pour it in the toilet and rinse the potty out in the tub.
When he finally got back to the room, he saw Sydney sitting up with Lily in her lap.

~~~
“I wish you woke me up…” I said to Vaughn as he collapsed on the bed. “I missed it.”
He looked pained. “I’m sorry, Syd. I just know how tired you were from all the stress and I wanted you to sleep. If it helps, I had no idea what to do. Jonna didn’t warn us about this.”
“I know. I’m so proud of her though,” I said, kissing my little girl on her head. “I can’t believe she woke you up.”
“She’s a smart girl.” Vaughn said proudly, tickling her tummy until she giggled.
“I go potty, Momma.”
“We know, sweet pea. Mommy and Daddy are so proud. Now we are all going to go back to sleep, okay?”
“Not sweepy.” I looked at Vaughn. He groaned slightly into his pillow.
“Sing to her?” he suggested. I nodded and began the Russian song I knew and we both stroked her hair. Finally, after about 15 minutes, she closed her eyes again. We smiled in relief and went back to sleep ourselves.
The next morning, Jonna was more than surprised to hear that Lily woke Vaughn up in the middle of the night.
“She usually sleeps through the night just fine. She must have been off due to the hospital excitement. I’m glad she woke someone up though. She hasn’t really been cooperating with the whole potty thing. Neither of them have. I’m sorry I forgot to mention it. I’m sure whatever you did was just fine, Michael.”
I smiled. “Maybe she saves the special stuff for when her parents are around. Like the talking. But oh, wait. She walked when I wasn’t here.” Vaughn laughed and Jonna smiled. “Oh well, there goes my theory.”
“Her medicine seems to be working just fine and she’s back to normal already,” Jonna said, watching the two little girls run around the living room, giggling.
“Thank god,” I said, smiling. “I don’t know what I would have done if anything super serious happened to her.”
Suddenly the doorbell rang and Jonna opened the door to find my dad standing outside.
“GAMPY!” Lily cried and zoomed over to hug his leg. He looked down in relief and picked up the little girl.
“Hi, sweetheart,” he said, walking inside. “I’m glad to see you are feeling better.”
“Yes,” she nodded. “I go potty!” She said, proudly. Dad looked a little uncomfortable at that statement and the rest of us laughed.
“Well, that’s uh, very good, Lily,” he said stiffly.
“Do you go potty, Gampy?” She asked, innocently. Vaughn couldn’t help it and started snickering. I watched my dad start to turn red and I quickly interjected.
“Lily, do you want to go to the park?”
“YEAH! Pak!” She started squirming and Dad put her down. She ran over to me while he sauntered over to Vaughn.
“You will forget everything you witness here, Agent Vaughn.” He quickly stopped laughing and cleared his throat.
“Of course.” He started to slink away from my dad toward the kitchen.
“Aw, Dad,” I said, going over to hug him. “Lay off Vaughn. She’s just a baby…she doesn’t understand what she’s really asking people.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he grumbled. “I guess we’re in the curious phase.”
“Hey, she could have asked you something much more embarrassing so be thankful of that.” I smirked and watched my dad grow red again at the thought of words that could have come out of Lily’s mouth.
We all went to the park and let the girls play in the sandbox and run through the grass. As Vaughn and I sat watching our little girl, who was healthy and happy again, we smiled and wished we could have days like these all the time.
“Hey…Syd. I know I want to keep her a secret and all…but there’s one person I’d really like to tell. Well, two actually.” I nodded, encouraging him to continue. “Well, I’d like to tell my mom. I don’t really see her as being a threat. And maybe the next time we come out to Switzerland we can take a quick trip to France so she can meet Lily?”
“That sounds like a great idea, Vaughn. And I’m guessing you want to tell Weiss,” I said.
He nodded. “I really don’t think Weiss is a bad guy. And he’ll keep her a secret too. I just…can’t imagine him not knowing. I’d like to be able to tell him about her and the cool new things she’s done and how pretty she is.”
“I think Weiss is pretty safe. We can tell him.” Vaughn smiled and thanked me as Lily came running over to us.
“Momma! I wanna swing,” she cried, impatiently tugging on my pant leg.
“You want to swing, Lilybelle? Is that what you want to do?” Vaughn said, leaning down and touching the tip of her nose, causing her to giggle.
“Swing, Daddy!”
“Like this?” He asked, standing and swooping her up in his arms, swinging her around, causing her to shriek in delight.
“Nooooo. Swings!” She said in between giggles. I watched them interact and sighed in happiness that he was so good to her.
“Come on, you two. Let’s go swing,” I said, taking Lily from Vaughn as she cheered and pointed towards the swings.
~~~

The rest of our visit flew by and we promised to be back in another month or so. We also told Jonna not to hesitate in calling us if Lily got sick again, no matter how slightly. She reassured us not to worry and we said our goodbyes.
When we got back to LA, Vaughn came over to my place and we called Eric to come over for dinner.
“What’s up, guys?” He looked around. “Where’s Lauren?”

“Uh, she doesn’t know I’m back yet…Syd and I wanted to talk to you first and she can’t be here for that.”
“What did you guys do?” He asked suspiciously.
We looked at each other and I slowly slid a picture of Lily across the table. Weiss picked it up and looked at it. “What? A picture of you, Syd? Cute, but what’s the point?”

“Look closer,” Vaughn instructed and Weiss began to study the picture. Suddenly he gasped.
“You…and you…” We nodded. “When? What? How? Is this why you’ve been getting along?”
Taking a deep breath, I summed up my disappearance, having Lily, hiding her, having my memories erased and Vaughn finding out about Lily in Barcelona. “So, now we go together to see her, but we’re not telling anyone about her, no one, not even Lauren, until we find out what happened to me during those two years, but Vaughn knew you were safe and we wanted to tell you. Do you remember that phone call I got during that briefing where I left and came back a mess? Well, that was her surrogate mother calling to tell me that Lily was in the hospital. That’s why we left so fast.”

“Wow. I have no words…wait… not telling LAUREN? Vaughn…”
“It’s necessary.” He said simply.
Weiss sat for a few more minutes. “Well, congrats you two. She’s really adorable.” We smiled.
“Man, she’s a great kid. I seriously fell in love with her within the first ten minutes of meeting her.”
“When can I meet her?”

“Maybe one day…” I grinned at him. “The sooner I can find out what happened to me, the sooner I can bring her home.”
“We’ll help you Syd,” Weiss said and Vaughn nodded. “We got your back.”
After we ate, I took the boys into the room I was making for Lily. They admired the colors I picked and the furniture. Vaughn came up behind me and put his hands on my shoulders. “We’ll have her here soon. I promise.” I nodded.

>o<

The next two months flew by and Weiss, Vaughn and I worked hard to try and figure out what happened to me. It was frustrating work and we were making little progress. Strangely, my father kept trying to tell me to forget it. That it wasn’t worth it. I didn’t understand why.

At the same time, things started to go wrong with our missions. We had a mole, but we didn’t know who and Vaughn and I knew Lily could never come here while that was happening.
October rolled closer and Dad, Vaughn and I made plans for another “research” mission. Also known as, Lily’s second birthday. Around that time, I noticed something strange about Lauren.

“You’re always going away with Sydney and her father, Love. Can’t you just pull out just this once?” I overheard Lauren asking Vaughn one day in the rotunda.
“No, Lauren. This is important work and I can not shirk my responsibilities.”
“Just admit it, you’re having an affair with Sydney. The secret smiles, the secret meetings, Jack accepting you?”

“First of all, Jack Bristow would never accept me if I made his daughter my mistress and for the 20th time, I am not sleeping with Sydney. I don’t know how I can make that any clearer to you. We have an important project going on, something that resulted from Barcelona, and it’s my job, my right, and my responsibility to be there.”

Lauren sighed. “At least tell me where you are going.”
“You know I can’t. Now I have to go. I’ll see you when I get back.” With that, he stormed off. I watched Lauren look around and then sneak toward his desk. She started to open the drawers and suddenly spotted the red folder I left him almost four months prior with the pictures of Lily.
Before she got a chance to open it, I called out her name. She quickly slid the folder back in the desk and looked up.

“Hi, Sydney.”
“Hey. Listen, I need help with something…” I babbled away, conjuring up a situation I knew she could “help” with. She nodded and said she would get right on it.
“Great. You can just e-mail the info to my PDA. Oh…were you going into Vaughn’s private files?” I asked nonchalantly, pretending I happened to see her.

“No. I was just grabbing a notepad he told me to bring home…” she finished weakly. I just nodded.
As soon as she left, I waited a minute and then followed her. She went to the parking garage and drove off. I followed in my car. About a mile away, she got out and went to use a phone booth. Getting as close as I could without being spotted, I listened.

“No. I couldn’t get the location of where they were going. I still don’t know the reason either. I got caught when I tried to search his desk.” She paused. “No, Sydney still doesn’t have a clue what she was doing those two years. We may have to start planting evidence.”
Suddenly, I knew who the mole was. And worse, she apparently knows what happened to me. “felgercarb,” I thought. This was Vaughn’s wife. I couldn’t just tell him or else he would accuse me of lying. But I knew we weren’t safe. I knew I had to tell my dad.

I got myself back to the rotunda as fast as I could and cornered Vaughn. “We have to clear your desk of any evidence of you know who. And mine. Quickly. I think I know who the mole is and they may be onto us. Come on.” Without any questions, he cleared his desk and hid his computer files and I did the same. We locked everything in my dad’s office.
“Are you going to tell me who it is?” Vaughn asked.

TBC...and tomorrow....
Sydney gets herself into big trouble... can Vaughn save her?
