Chapter 1

“Hey, Sydney, it’s me – Michael, Michael Vaughn - me… anyway, I was just wondering if you’re busy say Friday night at six-thirty for dinner and then maybe a movie? Lemme know, bye beautiful

Sydney Bristow giggled slightly as she pulled her cell phone away from her ear after listening to her voice mail messages. He was so adorable with his ‘me-Michael, Michael Vaughn – me’ stammering. She poked her head out of her office to make sure her boss was not anywhere near before quickly calling him back and confirming their plans. She should not have been using her cell phone to make personal calls during work, but she couldn’t help it; she had been dying to hear from Michael since their last date the previous evening.

Michael was… well, she thought of him as a boyfriend even though it had only been six weeks since they met and five since their first date and subsequent first kiss. They had met at a conference detailing new, up-and-coming technologies and databases for storing resumes of potential personnel. The subject matter was painfully boring, of course, but Sydney found a way to pass the time by glancing casually – okay, staring - at the handsome green-eyed, sandy-haired man two seats down from her. At a short break from the lecture, he approached her and they struck up a conversation, which resulted in them missing the second half of the lecture, being too wrapped up in conversing with each other in the lobby of the conference center.

As it turned out, they had much in common. They were both directors of human resources for different firms (a bank for him; a law office for her). In addition to their profession similarities, they both shared a common interest in dogs, Italian food, and stupid-to-the-point-of-amusing movies. Though they didn’t make a date at the conference, they exchanged numbers and Sydney left with a grin plastered across her face, having a very good feeling about Michael Vaughn.

Her feelings swelled even more two days later when he called her and they made dinner plans and by the time their meal was over, she had been won over by his charms, hook, line and sinker. Two years her senior, he was exactly what she was looking for in a significant other and it seemed that after twenty-eight years of searching, she found someone who had filled her pre-determined criteria perfectly. True, it had only been six weeks and she wasn’t quite ready to pick out wedding china yet (far from it, in fact) but she had a gut feeling that something good would come of their relationship.

A smile across her face, Sydney turned her focus back on her work. She had evaluation reports that needed to be done by four that afternoon or else her neck would be on the line at the hands of her straight-laced boss. Focus, focus, not on Michael, on this, she coached herself, but it was growing increasingly more difficult. Finally, she decided that she needed to get a cup of coffee thinking that, perhaps, the walk to the break room would remove Michael from her mind and allow her to focus on whether or not Amanda James was a good employee or not. On the way to the break room she said polite hellos to her colleagues and carefully avoided the massive piles of legal documents stacked in boxes all over the floor (a common occurrence in her office).

While she was pouring her coffee, a clumsy intern trampled into her resulting in black liquid spilling all over the counter, the floor and, unfortunately, Sydney’s shoes. She grumbled under her breath at the fact that the moron who ran into her didn’t even bother apologizing for it as she bent down and wiped the coffee from her black pumps, hoping it wouldn’t stain. She cleaned up the floor and the counter before washing her hands and returning to her desk, where she was finally able to focus for the coffee spill had chased any happy thoughts from her mind.

On her lunch break, Sydney received another phone call from Michael. Apparently, their Friday plans had to be altered slightly because Michael had received a call from his sister, practically calling him a heathen for not visiting her often enough. Michael asked Sydney if she minded terribly if they skipped the movie and made their dinner at six so that he could go to his sister’s afterwards so that she didn’t kill him with her voodoo magic, or so he said. At this, Sydney laughed, but agreed to their date change; it didn’t matter to her as long as she was graced with his presence for at least some time on Friday for, she knew, by then, she’d be missing him. If only work didn’t get in the way of fun, she thought wistfully.

After hanging up from her conversation with Michael, she grabbed take-out at a local deli for her lunch before heading back to the office where more evaluations awaited her. To Sydney, it was just an ordinary day; absolutely nothing unusual. However, little did she know, that day would be the one when her life would change forever.
