“In this world heroes walk amongst us. They’re people who have the courage to fight for their country. These are the people that are remembered, they leave legacies, and they make a difference in our world. Today, we have a chance to become heroes.” Prince Michael shouted to his army. “At noon, when the sun in just above Mt. Subasio’s peak, we’ll have our chance for revenge. It’s time to show the Rambaldians that they won’t get away with their crimes. They’ve come into our country, burned our houses, beaten our children, raped our wives, and killed our parents. We’ve tried to negotiate; we’ve tried to be peaceful… but they wouldn’t listen. It’s time for justice to be done.”
A resounding cheer echoed in the valley as Michael rode his horse to the front of the crowd and stopped along side his friend Eric. He gazed at the horizon, his eyes empty of any joy.
“It’s not your fault.” Eric said, placing his hand comfortingly on Michael’s shoulder before walking away.
“Yes it is.” Michael whispered into the wind. “It’s my fault.
He’d been warned. His spies had received information about a potential attack. He’d dismissed the idea; his county had always been peaceful, no one had any reason to fight them.
He was wrong.
He’d been in his office when he heard the screams. Looking out the window, he saw the attackers break through the castle’s outer wall. Grabbing his sword, he ran out to find his fiancé, Sydney.
He finally reached the ballroom, where she’d been overseeing the preparations for their wedding. His heart pounded as he saw her, sword in hand, fighting a man.
He sprinted over to help her, but had a short duel with another man, before finally stabbing him in the stomach.
Looking up he saw that Sydney had defeated her opponent. Their eyes met and for one second, everything was ok.
Then an arrow flew by, piercing Sydney’s chest. She cried out in surprise, stumbled backward, and fell against the wall.
Michael felt his heart shatter. He ran to her and cradled her in his arms as she struggled for breath.
She pulled him closer for one last kiss before whispering, “I love you.” Then her body went limp.
She was dead.
Michael let out an inhuman scream of anguish, picked up his bloody sword and fought crazily until no enemy was left.
The rhythmic footsteps from the approaching army brought Michael out of his reverie. He looked up. The sun was shining directly above them, blinding him. It was noon.
Michael felt a wave of fear wash over his men. They were greatly outnumbered.
Clearing his throat, he turned to face his army.
“Now isn’t the time to be afraid. Your lives, the futures of your children and of their children depend on this battle.” He turned around and held up his sword. “We will be remembered as heroes!” He shouted and led his army to the battlefield to fight for souls.
