Sci-Fi collection needs new home

I need to find someone who would like hundreds of Sci-fi & Sc-fi fantasy books for free.
I have been collecting these books for over 45 years. I am now moving to a small bungalow and have to downsize considerably. These books are in all conditions from lovingly well thumbed to almost new. Among these books are quite a lot of the old Ace doubles.- and just about every Author you can think of. So if you live anywhere near the North of England and would like my collection please contact me.

Oh, how I wish you were in the NorthEast US region instead of the UK! Including myself there are several readers in my family who would've loved to go through such a collection.

I'll post to our @CoolSciFi Twitter account to help get the word out. Hopefully you can find somebody who can appreciate the kindness you're doing of offering a life-long collection for free.

Have you considered contacting local libraries, schools, or even shelters?

Dear Kevin,
Many thanks for your offer of help on this matter - I have tried my local library but they do not take books anymore. I did consider charity shops - but having worked in these place I know that after a few weeks they would be thown away and this would be a sin. As for scholls - shelters etc. they are only willing to take 20 or so books - and I have hundreds of them. I do hope I find someone who can take the whole collection - as I know that any Sci-fi fan would appreciate them and get as much pleasure from them as I have over the years.

Have you considered a car boot sale now summer is here, or buying loads of padded envelopes and seeing how many you can get rid of via ebay? I'm considering it myself, as I am looking to move within the next 6 months and frankly 800-900 books will just hit the bin.

Hi Tim,
Yes I have thought of car boot sales, but as I am sure you are aware most of these are held on Sundays, and I can not take part in this sort of activity on this day, also I have no transport.
With regard to ebay, well apart from the fact that like yourself I expect to be moving within the next few months so would not have the time, ans I too have hundreds of them - I have never been very lucky trying to sell anything on ebay. I hope you find a home for your books as It would be a sin for two collections such as yours and mine to end up in the recycle depot.

Have you tried it post it in your accounts so that people are aware that you have this certain book. All you have yo do is put your contact number where they can reach you and the price itself, you have to bargain something if you really want it. Also, do a garage sale about your books by this means people would be aware of what are your selling.

Charles,
I am not asking for anything in return for this collection - I am not very internet savvy(must be my age) I do not go on to Facebook or any of those social networking sites - the only accounts I have are this one and Knitting Daily (I don't think that will help somehow) I have been in touch with 'Freebay' in the hopes of finding a Sci-fi Fan who would like this collection. I have also tried to find other Sci-fi forums that will allow me to advertise this fact - most do not allow ads even if you are offering freebies. I just hope I find a new home for this collection soon.

Gumtree might work I suppose. Then there is preloved, but it's not as good. Both have local sections.

Hi Tim.
The world is crazy - I offer my book collection for free and get no takers - I put it on auction on ebay and suddenly people want to buy. - Oh well it looks like I have solved my problem - I will let you know how much it goes for - it is at £30 at the moment.
Many thanks for all your help.

Well, I trust that you were able to get rid of your collection by now. I agree with Kevin's comments: If you lived near me, I would have been able to help you out and take some volumes off your hands. It is a revealing commentary on society, that you had a hard time giving these books away. It's seems that most people think that if something is free that it is completely worthless.

Hi everyone,

Yes I have finally found a new home for my book collection - There were 566 paperbacks and 30 odd Hardbacks - I put it on ebay and got £50 for for it. I guess it is more money for the charity box.
Many thanks for all your help.
