Star Trek: Discovery (2017)

A new, untitled Star Trek television series is coming in 2017.

CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.

The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Oh, sure, on the days where I'm tied up working all days news like this drops! :banghead:

The official PR spends more time talking about how viewers can watch it on CBS Access for $5.99/mth versus actual details about the show. I have so many questions at this point.... will it be set in the Trek verse prior to the current movie reboots? Will it be set in the movie verse? Are any of the movie actors involved (the PR says "new characters" so does that exclude all current characters)? Will it be centered around the Enterprise or a different ship? And if it'll be the enterprise then how will it fit into the movies, if at all?

I just hope CBS is series about doing a quality series with the fans in mind and not trying to use the brand for a money grab to promote their fledgling streaming service.

Confirmed. :( The pilot will be aired on CBS but after that the only way to view the episodes will be with a monthly subscription to CBS Access. On top of that even though you're paying a monthly subscription each episode will have at least 12 minutes of ads to start. 12 minutes is still better than the 18'ish minutes that a lot of 1-hour shows have now but, still, requiring a subscription and then showing ads? For just a few dollars more by contrast Netflix offers a heck of a lot more than CBS Access including original shows with no ads.

It won't be the Enterprise, it'll be set in the "Prime" universe (the original Trek universe before the movie reboots) about 10 years before the original Star Trek TV series [and about 90 years after ST:Enterprise] so there'll be some references & possible characters overlapping, and no currently established characters will be featured. So far the series is expected to deal mostly with the lower deck crews instead of the ship officers like the other series & movies have all done. The ship & set designs are set to be based on the works of Ralph McQuarrie's artwork from the 70's for the first planned series sequel to ST:TOS that never happened.

Meh...
Star Trek is broken.
I'm sure there will be a few good episodes but the concept's foundation has been lost.
Only a handful of people remember watching shows like Wagon Train. Explorers are no longer news. The sense of excitement, mystery and anticipation the public used to have is no longer present. Even excursions to Antarctica and into the deep sea are minimal news at best. Trips to the ISS are cool news but not expounded by mystery, adventure or suspense.
Star Trek should fade out. It should be left as history in favor of a new path.
Star Trek movies are fun but from a movie watching standpoint.

What Science Fiction Television needs and deserves is a new frontier. Not a Wagon Train to the Stars.
Space is a big subject with many areas to host a wide range of story arcs. The technology it requires is one of the aspects of Star Trek that holds our attention. It is not so much the Wagon Train trip as it is what the Wagon Train is made of.

Personally, I would like to see a show that is based on the theory of Nano Technology. Perhaps a 'Seeder Ship' that is a AI Singularity that is populating life into the galaxy. The AI is ever-learning and uses nano technology to ferry life to other worlds. The ship is a giant gene-bank and the AI keeps a crew of people (a few hundred) in active life support to maintain its systems and to offer 'organic solutions to moral questions'.
Not only would you have moral and social stories to explore, there would be high technology and a galaxy of encounters. The Nano-technology angle could allow for unique inventions and strange hazards.

... and now CBS has announced that you can watch CBS Access shows without commercials! If you pay $9.99 per month instead of $5.99. Instead of commercials they'll have "limited promotional interruptions".

Bummer...was hoping that it would be on regular cable...can't see spending that kind of money per month for a single show.

Release recently, a peak at the making of ST: Discovery (have we come up with an abbreviation yet? ST: DIS?)...

It looks good. I will not be paying for it either.
(Sasha, our TWD sniper, died for this role. Lol. I have to give it a chance)

Interesting ship, it almost looks like a cross between a Klingon Battle Cruiser and the Enterprise. Its a shame it wont be on tv, but on cant win them all.....

about 10 years before the original Star Trek TV series
Because the prequel idea was such a success with Enterprise. I'm not interested in getting a history lesson.
I want to boldly go where noone has gone before. I want to seek out NEW worlds and NEW civilizations.

Any significant encounter in this history lesson will need to have reference in all the other Star Trek series or it will be fundamentally flawed. So that leaves only OLD worlds and OLD civilizations.

What it tells me is that the writers have little imagination for anything actually new and exciting so they will get paid writing how Vulcan is so Vulcan, Romulous is so Romulan and how Klingons got their bumps, oh wait, they already wrote about that.

Lets see how much Star Trek cannon they can destroy.
Sorry, just can't get excited for this...

Like Star Bores, I reckon the trek has run its course, even alien's latest movie was a history lesson on how to change the plot of the original film, ill give this a 3 yawn, and hope for something fresh out there, and for Pete's sake enough with the Matrix graphics, its getting old!:banghead:

Tom, I wonder if Ol' Gemma would be surprised that some folks in the future would be critiquing her 2017 Trekkie film, lol.....Gemma we are in the future, and we bored with re-hash sci-fi films, wooo, weee, wooo, weeeeeoooooo. LOL!;)

From the future, woo, weeeoooo

I've been a bit out of it this summer so I'm still catching up on stuff the past few months.

So... are the ST: Discovery Klingons really a shade of purple?! WTF?!

And now I read on Twitter that Discovery, supposed to be taking place as a prequel to the Prime (class TOS) timeline as opposed to the Kelvin timeline (the last few movies), might be actually taking place in a third timeline that is a bit of hybrid of Prime & Kelvin. If nothing else that'd explain a few things at least and cover why Discovery might be called "Star Trek" but is unlike anything seen before.

So a 3rd timeline, eh?
That's what they are calling their lazy writing nowadays?
Lets expand on everything Roddenberry wrote and call it new.

The first new Star Trek series since Enterprise launched in 2001 gets a late start following a longer-than-planned production process that saw series co-creator Bryan Fuller depart as showrunner. The other co-creator, Alex Kurtzman (who was a writer on both J.J. Abrams-directed Trek films), remains on board as a producer, along with The Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer, while Trek newcomers Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts are running the show. Discovery is set about a decade before events in the original series (and will share at least one character—Spock's father Sarek, here played by James Frain), though the main focus will be the ship's first officer (The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green) rather than its captain (Jason Isaacs). The cast also includes Maulik Pancholy, Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Rekha Sharma, Rainn Wilson, and Mary Wiseman. After tonight, the series will be exclusive to the CBS All Access streaming service, with seven additional new episodes (including a second new episode tonight) arriving weekly this fall, with the second half of the season launching in January. A Talking Trek aftershow also streams on All Access after each episode.

Serek is full vulcan. Spock is Human-Vulcan. There is a reason why Roddenberry included a half human half vulcan in the show. It was to show inner turmoil. Are they going to rewrite what makes Vulcans unique and interesting? We have seen other full vulcan crewmembers in series. Serek commanded reverence because of who his son was. Off screen he was a member of the Vulcan High Council and an ambassador. I just can't see where including Serek on the Discovery would be interesting?
Plus, a show about the first officer? Ships are always about their captains. Captains have the final say in everything, its their ship. Perhaps we will get a series dedicated to the recycling chief next? Just think of the possibilities, we could get a series focused on every individual crew member.

Discovery is a Star Fleet ship. Since there is a limit to the known species during TOS, Discovery is limited to the races that are already in Kirk's Enterprise database. Many of those races were first encounters so Discovery could not know of their existence.
Discovery is limited to the species in Archer's Enterprise or new discoveries. Any new discoveries that Discovery makes should be reflected in Kirk's Enterprise database.

This is where Star Trek Enterprise show was broken. The Xindi (a major event) is never mentioned in any of the other series...
In 2153, the Xindi attacked Earth with a deadly probe, cutting a swath from Florida to Venezuela and killing 7 million — all because of false information fed them by the Guardians, one faction in the Temporal Cold War. The small-scale test was to be followed by a larger weapon to destroy the planet entirely

While a 'new' and exciting race, the fact that there is no mention of them in the 'future' Star Trek series is a big no-no. Lazy writing.
So, since Discovery happens after Enterprise and before TOS there has to be something in this new series about the complete destruction and disappearance of the Xindi.
Plus, any new species/civilizations found by Discovery needs reference in all the other "Later" Star Trek series. The writers need to do research.

Then there is the technology timeline. Technology that has been established in Enterprise but nothing developed in TOS. Plus, Enterprise is busted because of Riker implying the show was a holodeck program.
By some accounts, nothing in Enterprise can be cannon. Even if Discovery holds to the holodeck Enterprise it still has to contend with TOS and ALL other shows that holds cannon. This has to be done to the extent that nothing in Enterprise is known because Enterprise was a holodeck program that was playing in the future while Riker was there to run the program.
Again, lazy writing.

The only series that can be written to have any merit is one that takes place AFTER Voyager or in the New Movie timeline. For a competent writer, with an imagination, that wouldn't be too hard given the large pool of Star Trek Universe cannon to pull from.

Seems like writers think prequels are easy money because audiences, wanting something like what they have seen, will pay to see anything. Alien, X-Men, Star Wars and on and on. Prequel after prequel that ruin the original stories and we support this nonsense with our money.

(and will share at least one character—Spock's father Sarek, here played by James Frain),
And even that is grasping for straws at this point. They are so desperate to tie Discovery to the rest of the Trek verse that now they're retconning yet again Spock's family.
The Aliens from TOS:
This would've been far interesting then yet another ship series. DS9 shows that a show could be set in the Trek verse and not be tied to a ship. But now instead of space station let's go a step further and have it based on a planet where it's a crossroads of the Trek aliens and the Federation is just one of many alliances represented. Established aliens could be shown and new aliens & tech could be introduced without messing up any of the established timelines or canon.

This an area where the Star Wars expanded verse excels (just saying!).

Interesting concept!
Have it set in the future round 150 years after Voyager returns.
They could even surround such a planet with a Yorktown like station (mini Dyson Sphere).

Star Fleet: Alien Affairs
Star Trek: Babylon
Star Trek: Chance Encounters
Star Fleet: Treaties

It could even feature a fleet dedicated as emissaries with focus on one ship and crew of the fleet for series arcs. Much like the episodes featuring the Defiant.

The possible elements is infinite but it would require imagination on the part of the writers and personally, I don't think that exists anymore.
Perhaps hire top science fiction authors to pen the episodes or purchase rights on already established stories.
While it could cause cross contamination of Universes I would like to see how Star Fleet would deal with The Moties or Rama. Would the bugs from Starship Troopers be allied or hostile? So many possibilities.

Now that I would watch! You touch upon something that the older Trek projects did but is missing from recent Trek... actual sci-fi writers working on the scripts.

Maybe I'm just not 'getting it' with Discovery but the commercials and pics coming out so far is not enticing me at all to look forward to it as a "Star Trek" show. And each interview I read with the cast & crew talking about how the Klingons will be used as an analogy of our current political turmoil and how the characters will "break new ground" in representing different cultures & beliefs I can't help but think.... have they ever watched ST?! Roddenberry was doing this 50 years ago, nothing they are talking about is ground breaking TV.

Yeah, it's a genre show so I'll end up it watching it sooner-or-later but it's not something, as a Trek fan, that I'm excited about.

I find this similar in all shows now days.
I was very angry that they ruined the Science Fiction Channel.
What concerns me is that the younger generations think that Syfy represents science fiction.
That these new shows represent something new and interesting.
They don't see that they are broken.
When exposed to good science fiction it is completely lost on them.
20 years from now people will look back and say Discovery was Star Trek.
My own children don't get TOS. Completely not interested in it.
Mention Voyager or Enterprise and they know those as Star Trek.
Mention Star Trek and they refer to the new movies.

In the 40's & 50's there were magazines and radio shows that inspired people to think with imagination.
The 50's & 60's gave rise to bad movies with cool scifi concepts
Now we are peppered with agendas and political correctness surrounded by CGI.
Even the remakes fall short of the scifi element in favor of an agenda.

I want Science Fiction to inspire my imagination again.
