Jeez, how many times can they milk this cow dry?

Variety magazine is reporting that another Dune remake is in the works...

Peter Berg is attached to direct a bigscreen adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel "Dune" for Paramount Pictures.

Kevin Misher, who spent the past year obtaining the book rights from the Herbert estate, will produce via his Par-based shingle.

Herbert's 1965 novel is a sweeping, futuristic tale set on the remote desert planet Arrakis, which produces the interstellar empire's sole source of the spice Melange -- used for distant space travel. An empirewide power struggle ensues over the control of the spice. Berg would be the latest helmer to take a crack at the property, which spawned a 1984 David Lynch film as well as a 2000 Sci Fi Channel miniseries starring William Hurt.

...
Peter Berg seems to have come quite a long way from his Aspen Extreme and Chicago Hope days.

i agree. too many more times (this would be one of them) and people are not going to be receptive to it. i enjoyed the '84 movie and it is one of my favorites. the mini-series i could not get into too much. after seeing william hurt in Body Double back in the 80's i lost interest in his work.

i will of course give this one a fair shake yet time will tell.

There must be hundreds of decent scifi works out there to turn into films. Why keep hammering away at the few they do? Stupid idea really.

I watched Southland Tales testerday and can't believe I put it off as long as I did due to bad reviews. It turns out it was the reviewers themselves that were bad. The film was great, was a sum total of general knowledge crafted into a story. Those that didn't get it probably don't get the world either

i learned a long time ago not to listen to reviews. if they say it is bad then it really is good. i have never seen southland tales but now will watch it.

you know they made i robot so why not make the rest of the trilogy? or better why not the ringworld series. that would be awesome to watch

Yeah, I have very little faith in reviews as well. Too many films are bad reviewed and turn out to be good. Some have good reviews and are felgercarb. I listen to the hype then see what I want.
I've discovered some really good stuff on the independant film channel (IFC).

Not a Hurt fan either since "kiss of the spider woman", what a piece of junk. Yet I did like that remake of Dune. Better than the first one (Sting), which I found.....disturbing in places.

It was easier to follow?

Reviews couldn't be more personal or subjective. I see for myself, and am proud to say I have a huge collection of critic "Stinkers", which I (in my own little way) have decided, have merit above & beyond popular/critical theory.

Their opinions do not make or break mine.

I'll give the new one a try, and who knows, it may turn out to be the best one yet. If not, I'll be in the mob.....storming the castle to kill the beast !;)

They've been working on it for a few years now, trying to get a production team together and a good script. Recently, Peter Berg dropped as director, and Pierre Morel (Taken, From Paris With Love) stepped in, bringing a new writer who will be starting from scratch. My question is, "Can it be good?" Of all the sci-fi I have read, Dune is one of the more complex, layered plots. Herbert created an entire universe, with so much history, and so many sub-plots that he wove together brilliantly. Can a movie encapsulate what the book was truly about, or are we in store for yet another movie that is the equivalent of a rock skipping across the top of the water?

Personally I think that the original Dune movie directed by David Lynch (1984) was brilliant. When they tried to make sequels according to the books they ruined it, I think that Dune the movie should be left as it is, if another was made it would never reach the quality of the original.

I agree; the original Dune was an excellent film for its' time..............why mess with a good thing?

I kind of liked the mini series and don't feel the whole book could be squeezed into 90-120mins easily. And why try? If it was just the first film out there, maybe remake with modern funding, CGI, etc, but there's the mini series that kind of says to me that the money and effort would be better utilised on something new.

+1; needs 6-8 hours to properly tell story.

Looks like a Dune movie is not dead yet.

Director Denis Villeneuve told The Playlist that he will not be returning to the Bond franchise to direct Bond 25. The reason he gave is the interesting part (highlighting added).

Denis Villeneuve said:
The thing is I don’t know about that, but listen. Daniel Craig is a very inspiring actor and I had some contact and the thing is that I’m busy right now doing Dune. But, I will say to have the privilege to work with him it would be a dream. I would love to work with Daniel and a Bond movie for me would be a treat. It’s a matter of timing, I guess.

I remember the 84ish dune film, I saw the trailer before it opened up, and was surprised at the film when it came out. LOL! There were a lot of thumbs down on special effects as well as story line and acting, but compared to todays boring films I take it over any modern one any day....

I was thinking on this a few days ago while I was reading the reviews on the new Blade Runner film.
I think it will hinge on how popular Blade Runner will be and how much money it makes on whether a new Dune film will hit as big budget popular or direct to video.
I'm curious how hyped it will be?

Why The Dune Reboot Won't Be Based Off David Lynch's Version

linque
"Now director Denis Villeneuve is turning his attention to filming a Dune reboot for a new generation, but don't expect this version to take any cues from what Lynch created more than three decades ago. That's because Villeneuve is hoping to give audiences a Dune movie that's more in line with what he envisioned in his younger years."

meh.
The De Laurentis film, was very 80's, and very campy, I dig that one the best....
