I believe that once space pays off there will be an explosion of new designs as other companies vie for a piece of the pie. Not regulated by a public budget and red tape, there will be disasters and innovation alike.
Once an asteroid has been mined for resources, there will be no stopping the drive to bigger and better.

Not only space ships but space facilities and docking habitats.
There will likely be a manufacturing technique or process invented that will jumpstart
space travel much like harnessing electricity boosted production.
Its just a matter of time.

Any entity that has designs on Mars will shoot supplies there ahead of any significant construction or occupation. Humans will "litter" the surface of Mars with supply crates and construction materials.

An automated space station will be set in orbit, having supplies and support functions for planetary landfall.
There may even be a series of caches placed in orbit with delayed entry upon habitat command.

Likewise for the Moon.
Possibly for some of the more sizeable asteroids.
It only makes sense.
In that way, scifi drives science because the scifi makes sense.

You step on the nearest rocks before you leap to a distant one.
Step, gather composure, step, gather composure and soon, you have a safe and reliable path to the other side of the river.

Imagine a material that stores energy. Bulkheads, panels, decks and even the skin of a ship are a sandwich of this material, insulation and metal. The whole ship becomes a battery. There is no interruption of power because each item needing power taps into the "battery" layer at point of contact.
No wires or conduits where power could be interrupted.
As far as power is concerned, even a puncture or loss of a section of the ship would result in no loss of overall power. The entire outer surface of the ship could be a series of solar collectors feeding the "layer" of the whole ship. Damage could be confined by sections or panels without breaking the "wire" of continuity.

FAQ:

Q: Is it okay for me to download and print the poster?
A: Of course! I may never be making money off it and sell it via DevArt's poster-print service, but that doesn't mean this may not be printed by you (and since you cut out the middle man - me - it's even cheaper for you than if I sold it to you!).

Q: Why isn't the Death Star/CSO Carrier/V'Ger/other large ship on the chart?
A: For reasons of image quality and chart organisation, only ships between a minimum of 100 meters and 24000 meters are applicable for this chart, sorry. Arbitrary? Yes! But I had to draw the line somewhere.

Q: And where's TARDIS?
A: It's both too large and too small for the chart.

I like the answer for the Tardis, cute!

I would love for the ships from our books to be here but they're probably too small with one being a converted Saturn V and the other being 1/3 the size of the Saturn V. Still, great chart!

They may not be on that chart but they are welcome in this thread.
