Would you use a "transporter" if you knew...

Would you use a human transporter?

I always liked the concept and wondered why if they could hold your pattern in a buffer, why it couldn't be scanned and copied to "Disk". then you could make a copy every year on birthday and if something goes wrong..hook up your last saved copy to the the output and there you are ready for another go around. Getting up in years. compare copy with original. Use info from saved copy and mental map from the original and you get new body with original's memories.

BTW baldness wasn't the only thing they couldn't fix. Look at the original Captain Pike.

Transportation method:

Copy System: Original object pattern scanned then destroyed to prevent duplication --> Information delivered --> (Copy of) Original object re-created using materials on destination location

or

Transport System: Original object pattern scanned and de-assembled --> Somehow transport the original materials --> Original object re-assembled

====
Copy system can be used to create copies of experienced soldiers, faster than training raw recruits. Can cause trouble on monetary and industrial system due owner of such machine can create any desired items just by scanning some sample of it. In the future, there might be a hacker pool where they store patterns and allowing downloads of various items (and people) obtained illegally.

Transport system can be dangerous if you can transport something from anywhere to anyplace. Everyone can kidnap people easily, creating chaos by sending virus jar on a high-level meeting, transport a nuke-rod from its safe place to other room, etc.

If it is not the original us in the destination, then its obviously a big no way.

BTW: Who's transport pattern you want to download? :D

Interesting post!

I am writing a book on something similar, it's a book about population issues (the working title is Overpopulous) in the future and teleportation is one of the technologies which is common in the book. But in my world, teleportation is less accessible and actually commercialized like airline companies, as I from my research, teleportation would need the infrastructure to be useful. Problems such as the ability to scan something like the human body is impossible in the near future, as the definition of the human body much more complex than mere physical objects. As a human being is a much more complex organism thus things like dementia, cancer, and retardation might occur in a scanning form of teleportation - as a few changes in the neural patterns and celluar tissue can totally &$^#(*!@# you up! Scary isn't it? (O_O)

@Alexander Oliver Sen with the teleportation system as mass transit, are the risks you have in mind common or just an odds things, like the odds of crashing in a plane would be the same as the odds of coming out 'different' after teleportation?

Opps! How do you edit a previous post?
Well it's not in my world per se, it's just things I considered with scanning forms of teleportation.

In the world I am creating teleportation is still analogue, not digital as to be able to scan all your cells in the right order is a hard thing to do. If you rebuild it wrong it could cause any of the things mentioned before to occur. The amount of data needed to scan the human body is ridiculous, and it is unlikely we will see it in the near future IMHO.

Of course scanning solid objects or simple organisms, such as a plant or vegetable, might be much easier.

In scanning there are issues like how do you deal with soft tissue? It's moving and needs flexibility as well, meaning the tissue is elastic and joined by longer fibers. There are billions of cells in the body how can a computer scan to such detail and reproduce it the same way? It eventually will probably happen, but probably not in my life time.

With an exact copy, life goes on. Sure ... why not?
Heck of a way to do laundry, or do dirty clothes get duplicated smelly?
Or is new, all new? No bad breath, brushed teeth, showered body, shaved face, full stomach, clipped nails, combed hair, fresh clothes ...

Aha I think that's asking a bit much but that'd be a god send. Especially if you got to choose.
