Best College Football Rivalry.........

Webster

The Red Tarheel
I was just thinking(......   .......), the 2008 college football season is about to begin and I thought, what is the best rivalry out there? I could think of a few off hand(Florida/Tennessee, Florida/Fla.St., USC/UCLA, Michigan/Ohio St., Clemson/S.Carolina, Stanford/Cal, etc.) but IMO the best rivalry in all of college football happens at the very end of the season........... the Black Knights of Army vs. the Midshipmen of Navy(a/k/a Army vs. Navy).

Now, why Army vs. Navy?
(1)its' one of the biggest rivalries in college football, period; every year, these two service academies square off for bragging rights throughout the year(case in point....Navy has won the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy the past five years..... :D :D :P ) and always draws a packed house wherever its' played(past sites have included Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Giants Stadium @ the Meadowlands and M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore)
(2)the rivalry btwn. Army and Navy is intense, to the point where practical jokes have been played agst. the rivals' mascots; throughout the year, players live and breathe their respective mottos, whether its' "Beat Army!" or "Beat Navy!"
(3)finally, it is probably one of the few somber rivalries in sports.....the reason being that, for the seniors on each team, unless their teams' are headed to a bowl game, it is their final football game before graduation and their respective service commitment. Making things more somber is the fact that, since there are wars in Afghanistan and Iraq ongoing at present, there is the chance that some of those seniors playing might not return from their service commitments....... :( :( :(

There might be a few more reasons, but I think those will suffice......oh, and in case you're wondering who I pull for every year.....................

GO NAVY!!! BEAT ARMY!!!!

Yeah, me either. Jocks in HS ruined it for me. I used to play basketball, I like mud football and I will catch a baseball game once in awhile but no teams strike me as fanworthy. Overpaid jocks

Ooh, me, me! I'm a sports fan!!!

Gotta say, the Army-Navy rivalry is always good TV... but it pales in comparison to some of the other big rivalry games. I mean, every rivalry is intense, and they're all for bragging rights, and they all involve tricks and pranks and cruel perversions done on the opposite school's mascots. But Army-Navy at least has the sheen of civility about it. These guys don't really hate each other... after all, they're all servicemen, and they all serve the same country.

Now, rivalries like Ohio State-Michigan, Oregon-Oregon State, UCLA/USC, FSU-UF, etc... families are split apart, fights break out, people get profanity cursing one side or the other tattooed on their backsides... it's vicious. I lived for a little while in Auburn, Alabama, and the rivalry between the University of Alabama and Auburn University is really, really intense. Maybe not Michigan-Ohio State, but it's pretty darn close.

By the way, mlittle, I'm a big-time UNC fan, so... college football obviously isn't my thing. :D

But college basketball, on the other hand...

They got a decent football team.....now, as far as basketball goes............great team, but I'd haven't pulled for Carolina in basketball in a long time; I'm still waiting for them to make the trip down I-85 to University City and Halton Arena so they can play my beloved 49'ers......

GO NINERS!!!!
I'd love to see the Niners do well -- they had Michael Beasley in the bag and lost him thanks to some nefarious chicanery -- but come on. We both know that UNC is going to totally rock this year.
