oh I know why we're all confused!

I had forgotten the timeline of the book and the timeline of the movie were VERY different. in the book, it's years after bilbo's party that frodo sets out on his quest with sam. YEARS...

and the "gandalf reaches Hobbiton" under The Great Years must be when gandalf comes back to the Shire to find out if bilbo's ring is actually the One Ring.

I get it now.

Very good! 17 years to be exact before Frodo leaves after the Feast. April 12 is after Aragorn and Gandalf's search for Gollum, talking with Thranduil, and Gollum's imprisonment in Mirkwood. I'm so glad you figured it out!
