Could you imagine the Rambaldi mythology existing before the alien mythology in the X-Files?. I think J. J. Abrams is heavily inspired by Chris Carter.
Yes, and Joss Whedon. However, there are many other examples of series with strong "mythologies." Even without The X-Files, Rambaldi would be possible.

Over the years I think it's impact weakened. Despite how genuinely funny most of them were, there were too many comedy stories & it kind of took away the chiller elements. It was hard to take it seriously anymore. Moving the show from Vancouver to Los Angeles also took away that feeling the stories could happen where you live. It all became a bit too glossy & lost that realistic feel the first few series had. The writers basically losing control of the mythology; reducing Scully to a third wheel in the final series; killing off most of it's interesting supporting cast & David Duchovny leaving didn't help much either. And the less said about the final episode, the better!...
I definitely agree with you about the comedy eps and I noticed that during and after the movie, they tended to separate M/S way too much--they were supposed to be partners, after all. However, by the time Duchovny left, they had reduced his character to so much of an impotent whiner that it was a bit of a relief to me . . . but I know that I am in the minority (I was not a big shipper; the dragginess of it all wore on me). Frankly, I found Robert Patrick's dynamic presence a welcome change--but I know that many fans understandably resented him simply for being there when Duchovny was not (a thankless role, indeed) . . . OTOH, his partner wasn't nearly as strong. You're certainly right about losing control of the mythology . . . that's what happens when you have absolutely no plan and keep adding ideas as they come to you.

None of this detracts from the fact The X-Files was a great show, a real classic that will stand the test of time. Without it, there would be no Buffy, no Angel, no Smallville & most importantly, no Alias... :D

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but The X-Files' sucess made it easier for them to find a place. ;)

I know what you mean about Mulder. Part of me doesn't blame Duchovny for wanting out when he did, to be honest. I mean, there didn't seem much further for the character to go. They'd wrapped up the Samantha storyline & ripped apart the Conspiracy he was fighting against, essentially. I think Duchovny was bored & felt as though Mulder was being wasted. He lost that edge that the character had in the early seasons.

As for Robert Patrick, I agree he was a breath of fresh air, but he was definately in a thankless role. It made you realise just how much of the X-Files was Mulder. No way was John Doggett going to connect with the audience after seven M/S seasons. And the less said about the smart-arsed, 'kooky' Monica Reyes the better!...

I just hope that J. J has noted how Carter & co lost their way after building up such a complex mythology. Because unless he starts reigning in & providing some explanation & connection to all the Rambaldi threads now, I fear Alias may go the same way...

I understood that he didn't expect The X-Files to last long (boy, he must have been surprised!), and really didn't expect to be signing up for such a long-term TV commitment. Heck, when I tuned in, I thought, "I'd better enjoy this while it lasts!" I was thinking it would probably wind up like Strange Luck. ^_^ So, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was long past ready for something new.

I've just become a HUGE X-Files Fan.

My favourite seasons so Far Season 7 and Season 8.

I liked all the characters equally but Mulder and Scully are my fave's.

I think DD left as he wouldn't want to be typecast in the Mulder role for the rest of his life.

Did it do alot for his career!! I dunno I don't live in America so I not as exposed to his Flop Movies or Tv Shows that he has been in.

I asked one of my online friends can you tell the difference between Canada and LA in the visual sense.

She said yes "It's not Raining"

Lol that was funny.

But hey Canada/LA can pretty much adapt to anywhere scenerywise  ;)

:thud: Dani your av and sig are GORGEOUS :D *sigh*

This is really random but this quote has been running through my mind since yesterday:

"Woman! Get back here and make me a sandwich!!" - lol sorry it's from that ep where Mulder and Scully pose as a married couple. Which "Welcome to Liberty Village" totally reminds me of by the way!

Helen the Eppy you are talking about is Arcadia.

I love that quote.

Here's a cool LJ Icon I found of X-Files and Alias.

Very spooky how similiar they look  ;)

Woah that is kinda spooky (*giggles* spooky mulder *giggles* ) It's a great icon

Arcadia...that's it (y) :D I knew it was something like that, isn't the name of the community or the town they're in something like Arcadia Falls

Haha! I love that icon. And when I first heard about the Welcome to Liberty Village episode, I said, "hey, isn't that like that X-Files episode...?"

I have the intense desire to watch season 7 again... but unfortunately, I am home for the next month and my DVDs are at my apartment. Watched the reruns on latenight TNT last week... the last season, which I missed most of. Before that, I watched parts of season 8... when they find Mulder and he's dead but then comes back to life, then has to deal with the fact that Doggett is around.

Loved the part when Scully enters Mulder's hospital room, and he says, "Who are you?" and Scully gets all teary and upset, then Mulder smiles.

I own every X-Files episode plus the film, I forked out £225 to get the entire boxed set of all 9 seasons, it arrived lookin like a FBI evidence box....cool effect! I aint sure what £225 is in dollars about 400 i think, so I have seen every single episode quite a few times...was there really 202 eppys? As for my fave episode...i would have to come back for that one...theres so many good ones...like The Erlenmeyer Flask and Eve. Will come back with a list of me fave eppys!

So I have 202 X-Files eppys....88 Alias eppys and 48 '24' eppys.

Wasnt CGB Spender an evil swine?? How cool a character was Alex Krycek?? And I have to admit, I fancied Marita Covurrubias (very sexy!).

I really love the X-Files and the Mulder/Scully realationship is one of my favorites of all time. My favorite episode is Existence when they kiss with their son between them.

A good but sad episode is "Jump The Shark" in S9...the one where Langly,Frohike and Byers die (n)

The ones with the Morris Fletcher character were quite good (Dreamland & Dreamland 2)

After the Scully 'miracle child' storyline it got felgercarb...7 or 8 seasons of it were immense...once Duchovny left it dropped in quality.

X-Files: I Want To Beleive (the 2nd movie)....was utter nonsense, an insult to such a great series, first film was far better!!!
