Life

i'm going up to lake tahoe for four days, so i'll post when i get back on the 3rd. i'll try to get some major writing done, but i can't make any promises because i've got to do some major homework!

i'm back and here is the rest of chapter five. i have part of six, but i haven't typed it up yet.

Later at SD-6

Jack’s POV

“I paged you for two reasons. The first being to tell you that Sydney, you leave in two hours with Dixon to get the key. For the second, I only need to talk to Jack. The rest of you may leave.”

As Sydney leaves I mentally wish her a safe trip and pary that nothing will come of this meeting.

“I need to ask you something Jack. I need to know if there is anything you want to tell me. Anything at all. The reason I ask is I had a most unsatisofactory meeting with Ariana Kane earlier this afternoon.”

“Really?” I ask trying to act calmly.

“Really. She seems to believe that there is something about you Jack, something that I don’t know. I told her that there is nothing that I need to worry aboiut, but after she left, it got me thinking. Could Jack Bristow, my life long friend and confidant, be deceiving me? Are you Jack? Are you?”

“No, I am not.”

“I’m glad to hear that. If your answer had been otherwise, today might hav been your last. I believe then that we have reached an understanding. Is that so?”

“Yes.”

“Good. That will be all.”

Sloane’s POV

Jack walks out of the door. I watch him leave in a different light than I used to. I watch him leave with suspicion and doubt. It’s a terrible feeling. It makes me wish that I had never brought Ariana Kane into this. She seems to complicate everything. Ahh well. It’s better to keep everyone in line so as not to allow something to go unnoticed in my blind spot.

Meanwhile

Sydney’s POV

I’d better get moving so I can see Vaughn one more time before I leave to go to New York.

Ring. “Vaughn.”

“Joey’s pizza?” I ask questioningly.

“I’m sorry you have the wrong number.”

“Sorry about that. I meant to call the Warehouse.”

At the Warehouse

As usual, when I arrive Michael is already there. “Hey.”

“Hi. Sydney I’m so glad that I could see you before you go to New York. First of all, the CIA team left about a half an hour ago to retrieve the key, so you shouldn’t have any trouble with that. Second, I forgot to tell you that Alice and I, we broke up. I just wanted to make sure that you knew that so there wouldn’t be any doubt or deceit in our relationship.”

I instantly start glowing and I think it shows. “Thanks,” I say.

“No problem. I think it was actually a good thing. We weren’t right for each other and I could see that, but –. It doesn’t really matter. We’re together now.”

“I hate to say it –”

“I know. You’d better leave, so you have enough time to get ready for the trip.”

“Yeah.”

“Sydney, promise me one thing.”

“What?”

“When you get back, call me. I – I get so nervous when you’re away that I spend most of my time at Operations and I don’t sleep…Just call me when you get back. K?”

Of course Michael. I can hardly stand going on trips that are far away because I can’t see you whenever I want I love you.”

“I love you too,” he says and pulls me into a sweet embrace and ends it with a long gentle kiss.

“Bye Michael.”

“Bye Sydney.”

He amazes me every time I see him. I’d better get home so I can pack. As I walk out of the Warehouse, I turn back and give him a big smile to try to give both of us the confidence and strength to endure this separation.

Vaughn’s POV

She turns around as she reaches the Warehouse doors and flashed me a smile. I can see the hope and love in her bright eyes. She lets me know that everything is going to be all right without saying a word. That reminds me yet again why I love her so much.

i finally got the time to get it all done. here's part of chapter six.

Chapter Six

At Sydney’s Apartment

Sydney’s POV

I’d better call Francie and Will before I for New York. This is one of the few times I can actually tell her where I’m really going. Also, I don’t have to give her any details, so I won’t have to lie to her.

Ring. Ring. Ring. “Hello?” Francie says.

“Hey Francie, this is Syd. I was just calling to tell you that the bank is sending me on a business trip to New York City. I’m leaving in about an hour, but I’ll be back soon. Okay?”

“Sure. I hope you have fun in the Big Apple. Do you think you’re going to get to do anything exciting there?”

Exciting. Well, I guess all my trips have some sort of crazy exciting aspect. I can’t tell her that, so I say, “I actually might be able to take some pictures of the city.”

“Ooh, cool! If you get any good ones, make doubles for me.”

“Don’t worry. I will. See you later. Bye!”

“K. Bye!”

Well, I’d better pick up a disposable camera in the airport so I can take some pictures for Francie. I just have to put some socks in my suitcase and I’ll be ready to go. Wait. I have to call Will. I’ll do that in the car.

I get in the car and drive to the airport. On the way, I call Will but get his answering machine so I leave him a message telling him that I’m going to New York City and that I’ll be back soon.

I meet Dixon at LAX and buy a disposable camera in a concession stand near our gate. Every time I look at him, I worry what he’ll do when he finds out the truth. I know that I didn’t take it well at all and I had only been at SD-6 for a few years. Dixon has practically dedicated his life to it. Then my thought turn to the hope that the CIA is safely on their way to get the key from the Empire State Building. I’m sure that everything it going find, but I’ll feel much better when I’m back at headquarters and see the key for myself.

We board the plane and I pull out A Tale of Two Cities. It is such a sad book and I’m almost done with it. I absolutely can’t stand Charles Darnay. His character is no match for Sydney Carton’s deep and selfless nature. I haven’t read it in many years, but I still remember the hear wrenching ending. I read for a while and start to drift of to sleep, so I put the book back in my purse and take a nap. I am woken up by Dixon tapping me on the shoulder.

“Sydney, sorry to wake you up, but we’ll be landing in twenty minutes.”

“Thanks Dixon.”

At the Empire State Building

Dixon and I enter together and take the elevator up to the 23rd floor. As planned, a man is waiting for us and approaches us.

“Are you the students from NYU?”

“Yes,” I reply. “We were hoping to be able to get to the top observation deck and look out over the city. We are doing a project on the history of New York City’s architecture and were hoping to see the changes over the years for ourselves.”

“Certainly. Right this way please.”

We take the elevator up to the observation deck. As we get closer and closer, I get more and more nervous that the CIA won’t have been able to retrieve the key. The butterflies in my stomach are making me light headed. This is not the time to faint. It won’t be there when you arrive. You know it won’t. I hope.
We arrive up at the deck and get out of the elevator.

“You watch the elevator to make sure that no one is coming,” Dixon directs the man from the 23rd floor.

I walk over to the ceiling and call to Dixon, “Can you give me a boost. I’m not tall enough to reach the ceiling and there is nothing to stand on.”

“Sure. Hold on a sec….up you go.”

I push up one of the panels. Dixon gives me an extra boost and I’m in the rafters. I look around to check if the key is there and to my relief. It is not. “Dixon, it’s not here!”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay Syd. Come back and I’ll help you down.”

“K.” Dixon helps me out of the roof and I go take some pictures of the city for Francie.

Dixon says, “I can’t believe that it’s not there. I just don’t understand. SD-6 was sure that it would be there and they even knew what the function would be. Are you sure that it wasn’t there?”

“Yes. Why don’t you go check to make sure that I didn’t miss anything. After all, it was pretty dark up there.”

“Good idea.”

Just as I am about to help Dixon up, the man calls, “Somebody’s coming! Get down.”

“Great,” Dixon murmurs under his breath.

“I know what you mean,” I say trying to sympathize although I’m relieved that I won’t have to attempt to lift him into the ceiling. “We’d better going.”

“You’re right. Let’s go.”

Dixon and I head to JFK and all I can think about is when I next see him, he’ll be a changed man. I’m anxious for him to make the adjustment and I hope he understands that I couldn’t tell him the truth about SD-6 even though I so badly wanted to.

The plane trip is uneventful and we part at the airport when we get back to LAX.

Los Angeles

Dixon’s POV

“Bye Sydney. See you at work!”

“Bye Dixon!” Sydney says.

I hail a taxi and give them my home address. As we drive along, I realize that we aren’t going the way I usually take to get home. I guess he must know another way. I hope he doesn’t get lost. A few minutes later, I notice that we aren’t getting into the residential area of Los Angeles at all. In fact, we are in the business district. I lean forward and talk to the driver.

“Excuse me, but I don’t think that this is the way to my house.”

“I know.”

Oh my god! What is going on! What can I do to get out of the taxi? Okay. Don’t panic. The only way you can get yourself out of this is if you keep your head. Think. Think!

“Mr. Dixon. There is no reason to worry. Everything will unfold in due time. Please don’t panic.”

“How do I know that you are telling the truth?”

“You have to trust me. You can’t ever know for sure that anyone is telling the truth, can you?”

Now that he mentions it, he’s right. How do I know that anyone I have ever met told me the truth? That can’t be though.

The taxi takes a sharp turn and comes to a sudden stop near a bunch of abandoned warehouses. People race out of the shadows and circle the car. They open the doors and grab me, not forcefully, strongly. This doesn’t seem to me like these people are going to torture or kill me. What is going on?! Hold on. I recognize that guy. Where have I seen him before? I can’t quite place him.

Vaughn’s POV

“We’ve got him. Over,” I radio back to headquarters.

“Good. Take him to headquarters in the van. Over,” Kendall directs on the other end of the line.

I direct the agents who are holding Mr. Dixon towards the van. On the way, they handcuff him just as an extra precaution. He doesn’t protest.

At CIA headquarters

Dixon is guided into a room with Kendall, Devlin and several other agents. One of the guards shuts and locks the door and the other sits him down and then takes his handcuffs off him.

“Mr. Dixon. My name is Mr. Devlin. I work for a Los Angeles branch of the CIA.”

I guess I should believe him. I think I’ve heard Sloane mention him before.

“Contrary to what you may think, SD-6, the organization that you are working for is not part of the CIA. In fact, it is –”

“You’re lying! I work have worked for the United States Government for years. SD-6 is part of the CIA and you are not who you claim to be. If you are looking for information, you won’t get any,” I say coldly.

“I understand that this is hard for you to believe, but I hope that you will see that you are wrong. We are part of the CIA.”

“Prove it.”

“We have two double agents working for the CIA at SD-6, Sydney and Jack Bristow.”

It all starts to make sense. This must really be the CIA. That explains why Sydney couldn’t answer me when I asked her what she was doing at the pier that night. Or when I thought I recognized her when I was in India. She must have been working for the CIA! “Oh my god! What have I done?” I cry out in anguish.

Devlin says, “I understand what you are going through Mr. Dixon. It’s not your fault. SD-6 has lied to most of its employees about their true affiliation. We have brought you here to ask you to consider becoming a double agent for us, the CIA. This must be a big shock to you, so you will have time to think it over. All necessary safety measures and precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.”

This is mind boggling. I’ve just found out that the agency I’ve dedicated my life to has been lying to me all of these years. I was fooled into believe that I was working for the CIA for so many years and I didn’t even realize it. I see only one option here, to become a double agent. I need revenge and I need to right all the wrongs I have committed in my blindness. I will not rest until I make up for what I have done. “I’ve decided. I don’t need anymore time. I am ready to become a double agent.”

“I’m glad you feel that way. I know that you may have emotional problems regarding the matter, so I will request that you meet with your SD-6 partner, Agent Bristow and a CIA physiologist to help you adjust.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it.”

“It’s the least we can do. Before you get debriefed, I’ll make some key introductions. This is assistant direction Agent Kendall. This is Agent Vaughn, Agent Bristow’s handler.”

We nod to each other in acknowledgement.

“Agent Vaughn, please escort Mr. Dixon to the Debriefing Room. Thank you.”

Sydney’s POV

Now that I’m back in L.A., I should call him. I wonder if he is part of the team to get Dixon? Oh well, I’ll never know if I don’t call him.

Ring. Ring. “Vaughn.”

“Joey’s pizza?” I ask questioningly.

“This is Operations, I guess you have the wrong number?”

“Sorry about that. Bye,” I guess he must be tied up over at the Ops Center, probably with Dixon. I’d better go see how he is doing.

At CIA Ops Center

I walk hurriedly into the building and to the Debriefing Room. Michael is in the room with Dixon giving him paper and pens to write his statement with. I knock on the door and Michael motions me to open it.

Dixon turns around at the knock and gives me a small smile. I say, “I need to talk to you Dixon. I need you to understand that I’ve always wanted to tell you that SD-6 is not part of the CIA, but my superiors told me that I couldn’t. Believe me, it was hard for me to lie to you and there wasn’t a minute that I didn’t pray that someday I’d be able to tell you the truth.”

“Oh Sydney, I understand. I realize that you couldn’t tell me without compromising your cover. My one question is why did the CIA pick this moment to recruit me as a double agent?”

I look at Michael and he explains, “Up until now, we didn’t really need another double agent, but recently we’ve discovered that SD-6 has a Rambaldi artifact that we didn’t know about. In addition to that, Jack’s cover is getting blown by Ariana Kane. She suspects him of blackmailing Sloane about his wife.”

“Hold on a minute. I thought Emily Sloane was dead.”

“Sloane tried to kill her, but someone revived her and is now threatening to tell the Alliance that Sloane didn’t fully carry out the requirement to become a full partner of the Alliance,” I say.

“This is all so new to me! I thought that Emily died of cancer, but Sloane killed her. That explains why he asked me to go and check the hotel where he was getting suspicious phone calls. That must have been the start of the blackmailing.”

“Exactly.”

“Dixon, I’m going to leave you with this team of agents while Sydney and I have a meeting.”

“That sounds fine. Hopefully I’ll get my statement finished soon so I can start my life.” I smile as he says that. I’m so glad that he didn’t have as much trouble adjusting as I did. I guess his circumstances were not as traumatic.

Michael says, “This is Agent Smith, he’ll be in charge of helping your family adjust to the change and become protected by the CIA. Agent Smith.”

Michael nods and we walk out of the Debriefing Room and head to his desk.

“So how did everything go in New York,” he asks me.

“Perfectly. When we got there, the CIA had presumably already taken the key and left no sign of having been there.” I give him a small smile.

“Good. Ummm…why don’t you meet me tomorrow at the Warehouse around 1 o’clcok.”

“Could we make it 1:30 because Francie and I are having lunch since it’s Thursday.”

“Sure. That sounds fine. See you tomorrow.”

“Bye.”
