Good '80's Sci Fi Movies?

I wan't sure to put this in the actual movie section, because that seems more about newer movies. I want to talk older ones.

It is going to be a rainy weekend, so I want to watch a few good sci fi or fantasy movies that either take place in the way off future or in outter space. Are there any good 70's or 80's movies or TV shows that fit this? On my list are:

Dune
The Black Hole (Disney one)
Silent Running
BladeRunner
Battle Star Galactica (TV Series)
Krull

Thanks, sorry if my wording is confusing.

2001 a space odyssey, 2010: Odyssey Two and all four of the 'Alien' movies would keep you going if you can get hold of them. LEXX is a fantastic TV series and there was a great TV series in the eighties called V. Something a bit older but definitely worth the watch is 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' staring David Bowie - tres cool! Logan's run - a 'nice hair' film (70's).
The weekend is already under way so I hope this isn't too late to be of use.
Good luck.

Some good choice mentioned above, good choices indeed. Nice to see somebody else out there looking back on Krull fondly.

Some other 80's movies worthy of a rainy weekend are...

Flight of the Navigator
They Live
Outland
Starman
Enemy Mine
The Running Man
The Thing (Carpenter's remake)
Lifeforce
Ghostbusters
The Last Starfighter
Explorers (great movie to watch with the kids)
Tron
Cocoon (a little slower but not bad watching)

Actually, I haven't seen Krull yet. It's on my ever increasing list. Was it not well liked?

I just finised 2001. It was one of those movies I could never get through the first 40 minutes of. Tonight was like my tenth try, and I finaly finished it. And is was in. freaking. credible. I have no idea about half that movie, but I am starting to get it. Kind of. The ending really was the part that got me.. Looking forward to watching 2010 tomorow. Thanks, Kevin and econutterj.

When it first came out, I think it was one of those movies that critics really didn't know what to make of it since it combines sci-fi elements with fantasy elements and even some medieval elements. It caught a fresh life when it started airing on TV and as a VHS rental (this was back in the days before DVD & everybody having cable). It is a wonderfully strange movie that you'll likely enjoy if you're a fan of B-movies or movies that don't exactly fit the mainstream.

If 2001 & 2010 catch your attention, then you might enjoy reading the 4 original novels as well. Over the years there have been talk of adapting 2061 & 3001 into films as well but for one reason or other the plans falls apart.

BTW: I was watching Mythbusters last night and was reminded of another classic 80's movie... Real Genius with Val Kilmer. Can't believe I missed that one on the list. I still toss out the occasional quote from that movie.

Well, it is referenced by Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park and Robot Chicken. It seems like one of those movies that would be fun to reference in alot of situations. I guess there is no harm in seing it, I think I'll get a laugh out of it, if nothing else.

Yea, I was thinking about it. I am really bad at reading, I really try, but get too overwhelmed by seeing a big page of little words, I just can't do it. I wish I could, I miss out on alot of really good sci fi books because of it.

Atleast I can read graphic novels. I am able to attatch a name to a picture and the words suplement the picture, which helps alot. Do you know any good sci fi graphic novels? I know it's off topic, I guess I'll investigate the writing section of Cool Sci Fi.

Anyways, thanks Kevin and Starbeast. :D

Good 80s Sci Fi Movies

For some reason I don't see Charlton Heston as a sci- fi actor, but yeah, he was in those movies. The only ones I've seen are the first Planet of the Apes and Soylent Green.

Hi all,

Some of these are better than others, but all are worth watching.
They are listed in my preference:

TRON

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

Brazil

Battle Beyond the Stars

The Never Ending Story

Labyrinth

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension.
The end theme song is my current ring tone on my phone! :D

If people ever wanted to know what my personality type was like, all that'd have to do is to know that I loved the Buckaroo Banzai movie. To this day I still toss out quotes from it.

"Test Pilota Pirxa", an polish adaptation of a Stanislaw Lem novel. Freaked me out, when I saw it as kid. It aired only once on German television and is apparently very hard to get.
It's about a mission of a space ship to Saturn with a mixed crew consisting of humans and androids to test their respective performances.
The members do not know what their opposites exactly are. Of course a malfunctions occurs and one android tries to kill the humans. Creepy stuff in the vain of "Westworld" IIRC.
