MONSTERS VS. ALIENS
Despite a wonderful voice cast I found myself actively disliking the vasrt majority of this movie. Truly unappealing character designs and animation, clunky dialogue, and what I felt was just inept direction all added up to a very dissatisfying experience. Some of the action sequences were really well-done, especially the battle against the giant robot that culminated on the Golden Gate Bridge, but they were rather sparse. I found myself continually distracted by the absolutely hideous and disconcerting character designs of the non-monster characters. The same studio released Kung Fu Panda last year and that movie is better than this one by an order of magnitude.

ASTRO BOY
I saw this in a theater that was absolutely packed with parents and children which filled me with dread. I've been to plenty of movies where younger audiences like this completely ruined the experience for me. Luckily, this turned out to not be the case though I must say I feel that taking younger kids to the movies largely seems to be a huge waste of time given the cost of tickets, snacks, and the frequency with which these kids have to go to the bathroom. I found the movie to be a real delight if not an instant classic. I liked the character designs and voice acting all quite a bit, though many of the characters are rather bland, and some portions of the movie do drag. The real star of the movie is the action. Astro Boy himself is like a robot Superman and the action sequences are all on a gigantic scale and were very well-executed. It's no Iron Giant, but I give Astro Boy a thumbs up.

DRAG ME TO HELL
This is Sam Raimi's return to horror after a couple decades of dramas and the Spider-Man films, and if you remember his Evil Dead films then Drag Me To Hell will look very, very familiar. Obviously, the budget is much higher than what Raimi had to work with back in his early horror phase but all of his signature tricks are there, so many, in fact, that Drag Me To Hell would have a 'been-there-done-that' feel if it weren't just so much fun. Raimi repeats a LOT of his gags from the Evil Dead movies in this one (creaking structure of a home indicating that 'something is trying to break into our world', nasty horrid stuff being projected directly into the protagonist's face and mouth, etc.) but this time with updated and polished effects work. It's so similar that the film may as well have had the subtitle Evil Dead 4. These similarities absolutely work for me, though, and I found the movie to be disgustingly delightful, particularly the extraordinarily disturbing evil old gypsy woman. Drag Me To Hell was a real blast and I wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of the Evil Dead series.

UP
What a surprisingly touching movie. The opening sequence I found to be incredibly poignant and moving. The rest of the movie is great fun, and I especially enjoyed the talking dogs, but it's that opening sequence that really adds the gravitas to the picture that really puts it head and shoulders above other animated features.

Finally got around to watching Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation and... I see now why you guys were saying I could skip it. Apparently the writer fell asleep while watching The Thing and woke up thinking that he had a great idea come to him during the night.

I've got Starship Troopers 3: Marauder in the NetFlix queue, hopefully that is a bit better.

Universal Soldier: Regeneration !!!!!

I'm going to go with a Yes, but No! But Yes..... on this one. B movie budget, filming and sets. Not enough with Dolph, some serious attempt at acting by Van Damme but unfortunately not quite as good as that bank robbery drama he did recently. Also a severe lack of first person filming when the 4 unisols enter the power plant meant that the action scenes looked a bit lame.

Watched Hawk the Slayer last night with my brother. Thought it was pretty bad for the first 15 minutes but slowly got into it and by end I started to realize why it has a bit of a cult following. May do a podcast on this one in the near future. Also looking forward to the eventual sequel that is currently in the works.

What have I seen recently?

I haven't had much time lately to watch a movie, however a relative suggested one of my favorite films, the comedy western THEY CALL ME TRINITY (1971), and I watched it on my day-off. To me, this film was the funniest western movie on the planet until the arrival of BLAZING SADDLES.

I do not want to talk about great scenes in the film (spoilers) because there are those who've never even heard of the movie THEY CALL ME TRINITY. But I will say, if you what to see a funny Italian western that was filmed in the seventies, check this movie out. I've only seen the dubbed english version, I would very much like to see the original Italian movie, I don't mind reading the subtitles.

By the way LeRolls, I really like the movie DAIMAJIN. I found this trailer on Youtube, I only used it because the original trailer showed far too much of the movie.

Yes, Daimajin kicks much ***! I originally watched back in 2002 but a friend of mine saw the DVD case on my shelf and wanted to see it so we did. He liked it a lot and now is looking forward to checking out the sequels.

Rented 9 on Blu-Ray and viewed it with my brother. Visually striking but I found the story to be severely lacking especially the ending which just left us scratching our heads.

Daimajin is one of my favorites. I love how the sky transforms into a Farzetta painting's background whenever he comes to life.

Prof. Morbius: "...and this is his Puple Haze Mode."

FORBIDDEN PLANET
1956

I just finished watching this wonderful classic, I still enjoy the eerie soundtrack, colorful visuals and Robby the robot. Actors Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Nielsen and Anne Francis stand out in this film that was inspired by William Shakespeare's "The Tempest", according to the script writer.

I could listen all day to Professor Morbius talking about the ancient high-tech wonders of the long-dead Krell. And of course I'd try to keep the Professor in a good mood all the time, then when I'm ready to leave Altair-4 I would sneek out of there without telling anyone I was leaving. ;)

Reign_of_Fire_movie.jpg

Saw Reign of Fire a couple of days ago; despite the generally negative reviews it got at the time of its' release back in 2002, I thought it was a pretty decent film.

I actually saw Reign of Fire in the theater and didn't think it was all that bad. Still probably the coolest looking dragons I've ever seen onscreen besides Dragonslayer.
