Anyone remember the name of this film???

Hey all,

I'm at a loss. I watched this sci fi/horror flick on tv as a kid but was put to bed before i saw the end. 25 years later I still havent found it!
Here's a description of it

70's or early 80's movie I think
SIMILIAR IN STYLE TO DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS.

CREATURES APPEAR IN A RURAL TOWN.
LOOK LIKE GREY HARD ROCKS WITH LONG NECKS. ABOUT 6FOOT TALL.
APPEAR HARMLESS AND MOVE VERY SLOWLY.
THEN THEY BEGIN TO MULTIPLY BY MITOSIS.
THEY CAN CLIMB AND START TO CLIMB TREES AND FALL ON PEOPLE
KILLING THEM.
THEY HAVE A SOFT UNDERBELLY.
THE LAST SCENE I SAW WAS EVERYONE CRAMMED IN A TOWN HALL WITH THE
CREATURES BREAKING THE WINDOWS TRYING TO KILL THE PEOPLE.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Sorry, but I'm drawing a blank on this one as well.

Was it definitely a movie and not an episode of a series (eg: Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, etc.)?

I think the movie you're looking for is the 1966 British film ISLAND OF TERROR. It starred the great Peter Cushing and, one of my favorite British actors from the '60s, Edward Judd, who also starred in two classic science-fiction films: Ray Harryhausen's FIRST MEN IN THE MOON and also THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE. ISLAND OF TERROR had the alien "silicates" invading a small British island, dissolving the bones of their victims. If I recall correctly, they were dispatched with some good old hand-tossed dynamite sticks.

That's exactly the movie: Island of Terror (1966)

Remember the Horta from Star Trek? The ISLAND OF TERROR silicates were kind of like smaller, silvery versions of the Horta. The giveaway clue was the mention of the unforgettable tree-drop attack.

A very similar film was ISLAND OF THE BURNING DOOMED, a.k.a. ISLAND OF THE BURNING DAMNED, a.k.a. NIGHT OF THE BIG HEAT. Peter Cushing AND Christopher Lee were both in that one.

Oh, Netflix, you again disappoint me with not having this one either (under any of the aka titles). :banghead:

Yes I remember the 'Horta' from "The Devil in the Dark" episode in the very first season of Star Trek TOS (1967) which first aired a year after The Island of Terror (1968). It has even been speculated that they "borrowed" the idea from the film.
