I'm interested in why people play sci-fi games (or don't).

For me, a sci-fi setting is a bonus, or often the thing that first grabs my interest in a game. I'll naturally gravitate towards screenshots of nebula-infused starfields and laserbeams streaking through the void, but more important as to whether I end up playing it is the quality of the game (the strength & execution of the storytelling and/or the game mechanics).

Well, you guys suck for not voting in my poll :P

I ran the poll on a number of other forums, and here are the results:

I tend to play simpler games (eg: move & shoot something) as those are the types of arcade games that I grew up. I was born in 1970 so I grew up with Atari, Colecovision, Nintendo, Commodore, etc. where the games were pretty basic in premise & design. Those kinds of games were able to played for hours with instant gratification as opposed to a lot of current games where you can play for hours just searching for something you need to take you to the next level.

I'm right there with you, Kevin. The majority of my childhood years were in the 1970s and the first game system my parents bought was the Colecovision. I thought that was so hi-tech! And through the years, owned a few Nintendo consoles as the technology improved. Now my wife and I have a Wii system and an Xbox. I love the old school video games and arcade type games. Video games in this day and age are cool, but I just don't have near the time to play that I did when I was a kid.....funny how adulthood does that to a person. LOL
