Sci-Fi After Earth

Alien Soup

Head Chef
After Earth (originally known as 1000 A.E.) is an upcoming science-fiction film directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring real-life father and son Will and Jaden Smith as Cypher and Kitai Raige. It will be distributed by Columbia Pictures and available on IMAX.

The movie opens on June 7th, 2013.

In the near future, humanity was forced to abandon the planet forever after cataclysmic events, and they reestablished mankind on the planet Nova Prime, light years away from Earth, and managed to rebuild society. Earth was left in its prime state, and continued to live on its own.

1,000 years later, a crash-landing of a small ship leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his father, army General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) stranded. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help so they can return to Nova Prime, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. The father and son must learn to work together and learn to trust one another if they want any chance of escaping Earth and returning home.

Titan After Earth or Titan A.E. looks much better. I love that film, I saw it when I was about five or six and after about 14 years the animation is still stands up pretty well.

I can't say I've seen a film I've liked Will Smith in any film since the first MIB. I hope this film is taking the piss out of itself along with being a satire of other sci-fi films. In a couple of years all of that CGI will look horrible. It's obvious they're just going for boom boom weee lasers crashing spaceships tight spandex fashion of the future yahoo type of appeal which will make them a lot of money at the box office but it will end up being forgotten by everyone after a month

I need to stop being so miserable

I think Titan A.E. would have fared better at the box office if they went after a slightly older targeted audience; more anime-like, less Disney-like.

I actually like his non-action films better, like Six Degrees of Separation and The Pursuit of Happiness. Most of his action movies seem like they are trying to hard to make him into a type of actor that he just isn't.

Hey, it's Monday, feel free to vent. :D

Is this movie based upon anything else? A book, a graphic novel, a short story? Or is this solely from the deranged yet at times brilliant mind of M. Night.

Zombone, my understanding is that the story is actually from Will Smith. Originally it was going to be a standard father/son trip gone wrong in a remote location but then he changed it to the idea of moving it to the future so that the entire Earth was the remote location.

It looks like somebody is betting that the movie will be a hit because the companies Virgin & Overbrook have made a deal to co-finance/co-produce/co-market spinoffs from After Earth including sequels, TV projects, book projects, and anything else related to it.

I'll be interested to see what the movie ends up looking like. M. Night Shyamalan has been hit or miss for me. The posters have been throwing me for a loop. I don't know how many times I looked at one half thinking they'd gone overboard making Will Smith look young before I realized it was his son. I think I'm more excited to see Jaden Smith's performance.

The critics and film goers have panned this film almost universally. However, I think there were many elements in the film that weren't 'that' bad actually. If you excuse the sons acting, as an impetuous boy trying to emulate his onscreen father's (character) abilities, whilst going about it the wrong way, taking shortcuts, then you can explain this away. The storyline was hard scifi also, which mass audiences don't sit well with.

Just watched this one. Yikes! :o_O:

The entire time watching this I felt zero sympathy for the kid; he is just a whiny annoying character with no appeal at all. Nothing; nada. If he was eaten by the creature I would have had no reaction at all.

That aside, the kid is in training to be a Ranger and upon seeing a monkey his first reaction is to throw a rock at it? Seriously? It is no wonder why he wasn't exactly doing too good at the academy.

Let's talk about accents for a minute. What the heck kind of accent is the kid supposed to be using? I could accept that a thousand years or so into the future the English accent has changed but at the same time the kid has some weird accent going on there is a soldier on the ship that has a noticeable Southern US twang. If Jaden Smith ever gets another acting gig, somebody please tell him to give up trying accents and just use his natural voice.

Oh, and not to state the obvious or anything, but what's up with the aliens that the humans are fighting? Did they just drop some human-hunting creatures off on the planet and then take off for home to never be seen again?

Tim describes this movie as "hard sci-fi" above but I just see it as a mess. With a story by Will Smith and produced by Will Smith & his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, with their son Jaden Smith as the main character, and with M. Night Shymalan directing, this movie really didn't stand a chance. It is up for a 2013 Razzies award and it isn't hard to see why.

If you haven't seen the movie yet I'll save a particular item for a spoiler. If you have seen it, did anybody else think the same thing when watching the scene?
The entire goal of the movie is for the kid to find an emergency beacon to send an SOS back home. He, of course, finds it and sends the SOS. When he activates the signal though it is a scene that seems to have been copied right out of Tron. Holding the beacon above his heading straight up into the air a bright beam of light emanates from the beacon like concentrated laser. For anybody who has seen Tron that is a very familiar site of course since that is the pivotal scene from Tron.

Tron is trying to reach his user and the movie is spent trying to open a communications port. When the time comes he holds his disc above his head into the air and a bright beam of light emantes from the disc like a concentrated laser.
