Sci-Fi Disintegrator Rays

If you could make a disintegrator ray, what would you do with it?
I'm reading this bizarre sci-fi book called Horace and the Moleman.
The dude uses a disintegrator to create an underground city more or less.
Never seen a disintegrator trope used in that way.
Funny book...
Has there been any other book that imagines using a disintegrator ray to mine and make tunnels?

every time I see that word I think of the 'Earth vs Flying Saucers' movie. Saw it when young, stuck with me for quite a while.
There was a Heinlein novel about the US being occupied by the Japanese (WWII) and some secret lab developed a 'Leadbeatter Ray' (named after the inventer, Harold Ray). They could use that to carve underground stuff. The hook in the story is that the handful of people involved used it to start a fake religion that turned into an underground resistance movement.

Sounds like ultimate digging machine eh?

But if you would ask me, I'd say something similar. In case, we could instal that ray projector on a space craft, and creat asteroid defence system.
Very simple :ROFLMAO:, asteroid spoted, ship launched (Without Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck ), approach asteroid, and GO GO GO DISINTEGRATOR RAY! Well, something like that.

Disintegrator rays would bring warfare to a level that I don't think anybody would want to see.
