More "Terminator 4" Plot Details 01-07-2008 (13:00:32)

James Middleton, an associate producer on the upcoming fourth "Terminator" film, told Sci Fi Wire that California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will definitely not be in the movie. In fact, he will not show up in any of the contemplated sequels either.

Middleton also disputed earlier reports about the role of John Connor, saying that the character will definitely be central in the film. Middleton said that the movie will also introduce a key new character.

"It's post-apocalyptic," he said. "It's set after the events of [Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines], where we see the nuclear exchange at the end of the movie, and we show what the world is like after this event, and we show how people try to deal in a post-apocalyptic world. And we introduce a new character, who becomes very important to the resistance and to John Connor, a new hero. It's really about the birth of a new hero."

As for John Connor, who was played in "T3" by Nick Stahl: "I would look at him as a character that is introduced and that will grow in the second and third movies of the trilogy," Middleton said. No actor has officially been chosen yet to play Connor in "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," though "Batman Begins" star Christian Bale is rumored to be in line for the role.

With regard to Schwarzenegger, Middleton said the original cyborg was approached about a possible role or cameo before he was elected to office. "He has been approached, and in the early days of our development of 'T4,' one of our producers, Andy Vajna, who's a good friend of his, spoke to him about doing a cameo," Middleton said. "This was even before he was governor. But we know now that he is governor, he's got priorities that are above doing movies."

As far as the current status of the movie: "We're in active preproduction," Middleton said. "We hope that the [writers'] strike ends soon so we can do a rewrite, but we're planning on going into production in April."

Still not sure about this one...

Hmm, T4 sounds interesting, Ive always liked the come back movies..fighting back with nothing against an enemy that has everything. It could be a good movie...i just hope they dont **** it up

Well, everybody is a critic anymore. I like movies for what they are - movies. So what if they take creative license. So what if it isn't just like real life. I like more movies than most people because I watch them without judging them. Some movies(scifi originals) do tend to make me sick because of the cookie-cutter patterns they employ.

That's a pretty acurate date and when I initially read "22nd May" why was it I felt it meant this year and not 15 months from now?

Christian Bale stars as John Connor in the film

The fourth movie in the Terminator series will be released on 22 May 2009, film studio bosses have announced.
Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins features Batman Begins star Christian Bale as rebel leader John Connor.
Charlie's Angels director McG will take the helm on the movie, which is expected to be the first in a new Terminator trilogy.
Production will begin in May this year in New Mexico in the US and will be the biggest film ever shot in the state.
McG said in a statement that New Mexico represented an arid Western United States in a post-apocalyptic future.
"This is the story of a man's search for belief in himself and his fellow man. It's a long journey and the landscape plays a critical role," he said.
The film will open against family film Night at the Museum II: Escape From the Smithsonian - the sequel to the 2006 film starring Ben Stiller as a night security guard who realizes the exhibits where he works come to life when the sun goes down.
The last Terminator movie - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - starring California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was released in 2003 and earned $150.4m (£75.7m) in the US.

Thanks to the recent success of the Terminator turned television series: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, fanboys everywhere are creaming for another installment of the Sci-Fi epic, The Terminator. As we have come to expect from Hollywood, the possibility of profit, despite the likelihood of a lackluster product, will always trump the urge to leave a classic well enough alone.

The speculated storyline places John Conner, played by Christian Bale, as the protagonist leading humanity in a war for survival against the artificial intelligence (Skynet) that has recently destroyed most of humanity in a nuclear holocaust.

It is my point of view that this is a story that should be left to the speculation only a few friends and a few drinks can create. My cynical nature expects this movie to be hugely successful. However, I also believe that like Terminator 3, this movie will not compare in quality or scope to the first two films (T1 & T2). Maybe, it’s the lack of James Cameron at the helm, or the fact that even Arnold will be able to avoid this probable let down, but I cannot help feeling as if this is a blatant commercial grasp by a Hollywood that is cannibalizing itself.

Let me know what you think.

You're probably right that it will suck. But we were lucky to get the second Terminator with as good a quality as it had. When I think of how the movies started as practically "carnival" amusements it's amazing how far the "art/industry" has come. We've been lucky to get the great films that have come down the pike. I realize how many layers of my being are made up from the movies and books I've seen and read. I was lucky too to have been around during the time of Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Bertolucci, Kurosowa and others, when their films were on the screens. Wow! What a feast. And so it goes.

Just found this tidbit:

Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins has started production in the New Mexico deserts, with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington on board to star in the film as John Connor and Marcus Wright, respectively. The movie website is currently a blank page, but there's a strong possibility it will launch sometime tomorrow. (So keep refreshing, fanboys!) Directed by McG, the man responsible for the cultural institution known as The O.C., Terminator Salvation will be set in 2018 where John Connor is fighting Skynet to ensure the future he's destined for. Came across a tidbit this week that Bale is already signed on for three Terminator pics!

Considering the success of Bale in the Batman pics you know his price tag isn't exactly cheap so the producers of T:Salvation must be really putting some faith into it.

{PS: Yes, I know... the phrase "pics" instead of "movies" might confuse some of the youts' out there. Just think what they'd do if I started using the full phrase of "picture show" instead! "Hey, did you see that new Terminator picture show?" :ROFLMAO: }

I'm seeing Christian Bale casted for John Connor, a split with Arnie, new technologies for creating effects and modern cinematography and thinking, honestly, this could be rather good!

Of course, it depends on a few things now. The script, the acting, the direction, the fact it is going to be a three film run.

Anyone else think it is amusing that it is almost at the point where technically, it could almost be like filming futuristic scifi in the past! I'm sure we are fast approaching the original dates in the original film series where the events occurred.

and why oh why must the worlds military still launch satellite systems with teh same name as a massive media baddie?

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | British Skynet satellite launched

you'd think they wouldn't want to jinx themselves!

I don't know why it couldn't be good. Some others like Babylon 5 had (I consider) excellent "spin-off" TV movies, but then they had a pretty good show to start with.

This is the reverse, a good movie series, then a TV show (which I missed for "can't remember" reasons)(Did I miss something?).

Is this typical Hollywood...ring it out for every penny, or will they enlist talent (in writing), invest money (in special effects), and possibly above all, keep children & animals out of it.

I wont condemn it until I see it, and if it stinks, I'll hurl the First tomato !;)

(the newest version of) Andromeda Strain looks like it may be good??

SkyNet ? name recognition...it eases the pain of using your money to pay for something that you'll have to pay to use, which is not much better than what you use now. Somehow it make it sound "happy" & "familiar", to distract you from the helplessness and sorrow.

I watched the Andromeda Strain mini series. It was quite passable actually. A modernised version, but definitely worth the watch anyhow. The way they detailed the virus and its ending was quite upto date and I like that change.

Tim, Andromeda Strain has already aired in the UK or did you find a copy on the net?

It's not even starting to air here in the states until 9:00 PM tonight (about another hour to go).

er, I really don't remember how I came to be watching it! It came out on dvd about the 16th May actually and had aired about the end of April somewhere. But I had you guys in thought when I brought it up. Hence why I didn't give away the plot details!

and back to Terminator : Salvation, Warner Bro's has put up an official blog for it :

new Terminator movie to have "surreal" silver added visuals

CGI or not CGI? Anyone who has seen dark, comic book style films such as Casshern might be interested in the fact that filming style for the new Terminator film is to provide a surreal view of the world as it would feel to those living in it.

Terminator Salvation director McG has claimed that the latest instalment in the sci-fi franchise will have a "surreal" visual style.

In a posting on the film's official website, the Charlie's Angels filmmaker said: "We have set out to achieve a completely new visual style that hasn't been seen before... Basically, we are adding three times as much silver.

"It creates a surreal texture that is in keeping with the notion of the entire picture - feeling detached from the world we know today."

McG also praised the story contributions made by leading men Christian Bale and Sam Worthingon.

"Every morning and every night, Christian and I work on the story," he added. "Sam's contribution has been excellent. We are committed to putting the story and character first and then supplementing that with action and visual effects. It is our intention to make a film on a large scale with the nuance and subtext of a high quality independent picture.

"The richness of the story is really coming out now. It's a Prometheus tale really, how creating life creates real responsibility - and if left unchecked, can be our undoing."
