Alien encounters, abductions and sightings are very much out of the picture since they were milked for televisual success by the popular series The X-Files in the 1990s. This diminution of media coverage for UFOs and suchlike could of course be part of the very elaborate cover-up by the US government, which obviously has to be in cahoots with the more ominous races of aliens currently running the show in Area 51.
That doesn’t prevent the brave J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies from Chicago from publishing a map of UFO sightings in the US. It indicates the number of UFO reports per 100.000 people by county in the continental US. Some observations:
• There is a marked difference in levels of UFO visitation between the eastern and western halves of the continental US. Apparently, extraterrestrials like it out west.
• Marked exceptions to this rule is a hotspot in northern Minnesota, several others spread out mainly in Missouri and Illinois and a small area in the Florida panhandle.
• Aliens like the west, but generally don’t care for Dixie: the south is remarkably UFO-free.
• Preferred landing spots of UFOs are concentrated in the states of New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, the three coastal states and Nevada – with a spike around, of course, Area 51.
The map was sent in by nonie3234 and can be found here on www.scifi.com.

Aside from a few sightings in western Illinois there are not many by me. Anyone live in the red zones?

I am shocked that the middle of PA (aka: "Pennsyltucky") does not have a higher reporting rating.

What was that MSNBC's Chris Matthews once said about Pennsylvania......"You got Philly on one end of the state, Pittsburgh on the other end, and Alabama in the middle of the state.", or something like that....... :P

Going back on topic, am I seeing things on that map, or are some, if not most of the UFO hotspots near military bases?(I see the obvious Area 51 connection, but there's another hotspot around the far end of Texas about where Ft. Bliss is located; there's a couple of hotspots around Cheyenne Mt., one north of Mountain Home AFB in Idaho, etc.)......

Nice observation!

Thanks! (y)

There's a couple more that come to mind the more I look at the map...........
~~that one hotspot in California looks like its' north of TwentyNine Palms
~~Cannon and Holloman AFBs' in New Mexico look as though they're smack dab in the middle of a couple of hotspots
~~Malmstrom AFB in Montana is in another hotspot, also......

It would be interesting to see overlays of different things on top of the UFO hotspots map, that's for sure......

I would want to see an overlay of ... "Show me reported UFO sightings, by year, in relation to geographic proximity of US military bases large enough to have an airfield cross-indexed to US military bases large enough to have an airfield and where either military plane and/or drone development has been either confirmed to have taken place or where such development has been rumored to have taken place."

:D

I live in a UFO hot spot, but I have never seen anything. Except one night. A few lights staying at a constant speed at night from one side of the sky to the other, no blinking lights or sound. There were a few within the hour I was outside. You think it was anything? It was durring a weak meteor shower (you could see a few shooting stars an hour).

Ummm... yeah, I'd say it probably wasn't anything. Probably a weather baloon, or maybe ball lightning. Nothing for you to worry about.

If you could just look right here...

It's odd, isn't it, how many people assume that "UFO" means "alien spaceship, probably out to abduct someone".

I once read that a significant percentage of the US population believed that they had been abducted by aliens at least once. They'd need traffic lights up in the sky to manage the flow of spaceships if that were true...

Yep, only possible explanation I can think of.

Which just goes to show how poorly trained people are in identifying what they see in the night sky. Or how willing some people are to reject those mundane, boring, logical explanations in favour of some wonderful fantasies about alien spaceships. (y)
