Chapter 1

Los Angeles, California

The paperwork was endless. Sydney and Michael thought that the mountains of papers would never end. Each pen stroke just added to the finality of the situation.

They still couldn’t believe that it had happened.

***Flashback***
CIA Headquarters
Conference room

“Hello agents,” said Kendell. “We have received recent Intel that indicates that there may be a new SD cell forming. Agent Vaughn and Agent Bristow will be the key people in the mission.”

“The Intel shows that this man (indicates to screen), Patrick Kent, is the head of the new SD cell. You both will go undercover to retrieve any information discretely as possible,” informed Jack.

“What’s our cover?” asked Sydney.

“You and Vaughn will be going undercover as Steven and Katie Smith. You will be occupying the house next door, and will be “moving in” tomorrow along with an addition,” Kendell reported.

“What do you mean by ‘an addition’?” asked Vaughn.

“We’ve recruited a special agent. Her name is Margaret Smith, and she will be helping with the family image,” enlightened Jack.

“She’s helping how? Is she going to be my live-in sister or something along those lines?” asked Sydney.

“Actually, she will be your daughter in this scenario,” Kendell said as he passed them their documents. “I believe you will find everything in order. Otherwise, are there any questions?” He looked around the room. “Good. We will hear from you soon, and good luck on your mission.”

Later in the Hallway

“How old do you think she is?” asked Sydney.

“I don’t have a clue,” replied Michael.

“Well, now I’m curious about her. I want this mission to go well, and I want to know her a little bit before the mission,” said Sydney.

“I-“ began Michael

“Hello Agent Bristow, Agent Vaughn. I believe we haven’t met. My name is Margaret Smith”

Chapter 2
Present time
Los Angeles

It hurt just to think about it. But they had to move on. Move on from the mistakes, move on from the past, and move ahead in life.

Vaughn and Sydney would have to try to survive together.

CIA Headquarters

Before them was a petite girl in a crisp black suit. With shoulder length blonde hair, sparkling green eyes, and a genuine smile, she looked like the perfect person to perform as their daughter.

It had both Sydney and Vaughn staring at her, speechless.

“Um... hello,” said Sydney, recovering her voice.

“Yes, hello,” repeated Vaughn, while standing up and extending his hand.

“I just thought all of us should meet and learn about each other before we’re to move into the house,” explained Margaret, taking Vaughn’s hand.

“Well, why don’t you take this chair, I’ll go find another one, and then we can get to know a little bit about each other,” said Vaughn.

“Alright, thank you,” proclaimed Margaret.

Vaughn helped Margaret into her chair and went in search of another chair. As Sydney watched his retreating figure, Margaret was observing her. After a few moments, she started to smile, and eventually began to giggle.

“What?” asked Sydney, now snapping her attention to the adolescent in front of her.

“Oh, it’s nothing, really. I just find it so great that you can switch into the whole ‘wife role’ so quickly. I mean, that is just a really good transition. I heard that you were so professional, and to me, that look, was really good acting,” rushed Margaret.

“Oh…um…jeez, I don’t know what to say to that one. I guess I’m just naturally good like that,” Sydney stumbled.

“Naturally?” asked Margaret with and honest smile.

“Yes, naturally,” said Sydney, hating herself for being so translucent with her feelings with Vaughn. Aren’t I supposed to be an expert at masking my feelings, she thought.

“I’m sorry, I’m probably being too forward or something like that. I do that sometimes,” apologized Margaret.

“It’s okay, really,” said Sydney.

A shadow fell over both of them.

“So, what are we going to talk about,” asked Vaughn.

Chapter 3
Present time
Los Angeles

“Syd,” begged Michael after walking to her, “why don’t we stop with all the paper work. We can go out to eat, or just sit around and do nothing. Just, please, stop with this madness. You’re running yourself ragged, and I absolutely hate seeing you this way.”

“If I stop, then it leaves the opportunity for me to think. And right now I just don’t want to think about anything. So, I’m just going about like normal, with all the paperwork,” said Sydney, not looking Michael in the eye.

Michael caught on, and lifted her chin with a crooked finger. He said, “Sydney, do you think you’re the only one thinking about it. Don’t you think it has me eating inside?”

“Hell, Sydney, it was all my fault!”

***Flashback***
London, England
In the new house

Michael POV

“Syd, Maggie, how long does it take you to get ready? I mean, you are women, well, one of you is, but still, it doesn’t take this long!” I thought living with girls was horrible, but when it takes them 40 minutes just to get ready to “meet the neighbors”, it’s just ridiculous!

“Hey, you try looking good with bare essential,” yelled back Sydney.

Didn’t she know she didn’t need any essentials? Well, she needed like…clothes, but oh god Vaughn, don’t go there. Don’t think that. Just think about something else.

Suddenly, I heard giggling overhead. It reminded me of earlier. Back at headquarters, and even on the plane, Sydney and Maggie talked and laughed about almost everything. I learned a lot about both of them, things I never would have imagined. Like how Sydney said she always loved playing on the monkey bars when she was younger…

“Hello! Vaughn, it’s like you checked out or something,” said Maggie.

“Hmm, oh! Sorry. I guess I did space,” I said, apologetically.

“What am I supposed to do with you Vaughn,” said Sydney, jokingly, while walking down the stairs.

My attention immediately tuned in to that voice. My head went in that direction, looking for her. And then I saw her. Damn, she just looked good. With her hair swept up into some sort of twisty thing, with strays of it framing her face, and her simple black dress clinging to all the right places, I could have probably just jumped her right then and there.

Too bad Maggie’s in the room.

“Come on, Steven, let’s go meet the neighbors,” said Sydney, slipping her arm through mine.

It’s going to be a long night.

Chapter 4
Present time
Los Angeles

Neither of them said anything for a long while. They just stared at each other, stunned at what he had said.

Then Michael let go of her chin and started to walk away. Sydney immediately got up, worried about him.

“Michael,” said Sydney. She went to reach for his arm before he stormed off.

Michael dodged her hand. “No Sydney. I’m just going to go,” he said with a terrible sadness in his eyes.

Sydney sat down and let him go.

She could feel the tears trickling down her cheeks.

***Flashback***
Dinner in the Kent house

Syd POV

If I don’t get out of here soon, I’m going to die from boredom! Could she be any duller? Of course, a person with no life is perfect match for someone running a new SD cell.

“Darling,” said Vaughn with one of the sexiest smiles I probably have ever seen, “didn’t you here that?”

“Hmm? I’m sorry dear; I was distracted for a moment. What were we talking about?” I asked with what I hoped was a kind smile.

“About childbirth. You must have been think about Emma’s, I suppose,” said Vaughn, referring to Maggie.

“Oh, do tell of your labor, while we’re sharing,” said Betsy, Patrick’s wife.

“Oh, it was, um, it was –“ I stumbled.

“It was a spectacular moment, as I recall,” began Michael, taking my hand. He turned, looked into my face, and smiled tenderly at me. He really did have a wonderful smile. “What I can remember, well, I remember her shining face.” He said, turning back to the Kents.

“Oh Steven, you’re being too modest,” I said. I could feel my face start to heat. I must be blushing horribly. How embarrassing!

“But I thought you always told me that I never cried when I came out. You said that I just looked around, and smiled. Didn’t you?” asked Maggie, saving the moment.

“Yes, we did. You were so beautiful. And you never once cried. I held you, and you actually smiled up at me,” said Michael.

“Not until after I held you, of course. You were the most lovely thing I had ever laid eyes on,” I said, falling into the role.

“It’s just the strangest thing to me,” said Betsy. “I mean, Patrick and me talk about all of this, and we enjoy reminiscing, but you two talk so openly about it, even in front of us.”

“Oh, well, Betsy, I don’t know, I guess that we’re so open people because we don’t really need to hide anything. I consider our family very honest,” said Michael. Damn, he was so good at convincing people. If I didn’t know better, I’d just think that we were one happy family.

“Oh, mom, I think we overstayed our visit,” said Maggie. Then she lowered her voice to a loud enough whisper for Betsy to hear. “Um, besides, my “little friend” just dropped by.”

“Oh, yes, of course. Steven, I think we should leave now,” I said, slipping my hand around the crook of his elbow. “Emma has a little problem, and we need to go home to take care of it.” I smiled at him.

“Oh yes, of course. But I’m sure that we’ll be back soon. And tell Patrick that we were sorry he couldn’t join us. Maybe we could have a gathering at our place once we get settled,” said Michael, with ease.

“That would be lovely,” said Betsy.

“It was very nice to meet you Mrs. Kent, but if you’ll excuse me, I really need to go home right now,” said Maggie.

“Oh, yes, of course dear,” said Betsy with a concerned smile on her face.

“I’ll call you Betsy,” I said. I gave her a smile, and nudged Michael toward the door. I needed to get out of here, now.

We walked out the door. Maggie was behind us, walking with anxiousness. She really was brilliant. I couldn’t have played it better myself.

Chapter 5
Los Angeles

Michael POV

I could see her pain. If not for herself, then for me. I can see her tears, and all I want to do is wipe them away. I don’t know how she could forget what I did. What I made happen. She forgave me so easily, but I can’t let that happen. I made it happen, so I shouldn’t be forgiven.

I can’t believe I had let it happen.

***Flashback***
Back in the house
In Sydney/Michael Bedroom

“I felt so sorry for the wife. I mean, whose husband just doesn’t show up after planning it ahead of time?” said Sydney.

“Hey, don’t say that. You know he’s probably working and not wanting his wife and child to get killed. Didn't you do that for Will and Francie,” asked Michael.

“I did,” said Sydney, remorsefully. She started to think about it, about all the lies that she had told both of them. Even though some of the burden had been lifted when Will found out, so much more was added on for the same reason. Just the thought of her friends being in danger brought tears to her eyes.

“Hey,” whispered Vaughn, suddenly behind her. “Come here.” He pulled her into his arms. He whispered words of comfort while stroking her hair. After some time, Sydney’s tears subsided. But Vaughn didn’t let go. He didn’t want to.

She started to part from him, and he panicked. He crushed her body to his, his mouth to hers. For a second, Sydney didn’t respond. Then, slowly, rather reluctantly, she responded back with a fierce amount of passion.

In the hallway…

Maggie POV

God, I didn’t think it was going to take that long! I thought my legs were going to give if I had to crouch next to this door anymore. At least I can get on with my job.

Now where was that file?

Chapter 6
CIA Headquarters

They just sat there, letting the guilt wash over them in waves. Sitting in opposite corners in the room, they snuck quick glances at each other, trying to gauge each other’s feelings.

It was going to be a long day.

***Flashback***
Next morning in the house

Michael POV

She looked beautiful in the morning. She looked peaceful when she slept. And she looked so good; I don’t know how I could keep my hands off her for much longer.

Stop thinking about it! God, I can’t just stay here and stare at her thinking about taking her again!

Maybe one kiss wouldn’t hurt. Yeah, a kiss is harmless enough.

Syd POV

I can feel someone moving around on the bed. It was probably Mike, so why even bother getting up.

That’s exactly what I was thinking until his lips touched mine. I immediately responded to him, taking him deeper into my mouth.

I could get used waking up like this.

No more POV

Half and hour later, Sydney and Michael walked out of the bedroom. Fully sated and happy, they walked down to the kitchen to feed their empty stomachs.

Going down the stairs, they finally saw it. All of the furniture was displaced and shredded. Papers were thrown all over the place, including the mission briefing.

“Michael,” Sydney gasped.

“felgercarb,” Michael muttered. “Maggie, where are you?”

“Oh my god, Vaughn, where is she?” asked Sydney. “Maggie!” she screamed. Sydney ran down the hall, looking in every room. “Maggie!”

“I don’t see her anywhere,” said Sydney, returning.

“Syd,” Vaughn said, picking up a paper, “we’ve been made.” He passed her the paper.

“Oh god,” she whispered, tears in her eyes. She read further along in the paper. It seemed like Maggie was gone, and it looked like for good.

Then the world faded from her

Chapter 7
CIA Headquarters

Michael POV

I could remember her expression when I told her that we were made. And when she feinted, my heart had stopped. I couldn’t believe that I had let my needs come before the mission. I wasn’t supposed to get emotionally involved with either of them! I should never let my emotions get the better of me. And now, because of my stupidity, Maggie is gone, and now I have to work my ass off to find her.

Of course, I know Sydney well enough to have her help with the investigation. She would go crazy if she couldn’t. I’m sure right now that she’s feeling responsible for the whole fiasco even though it wasn’t even remotely her fault at all. So, in spite of my gut instinct to keep her away from this, I let her take care of the bulk of the paperwork.

From the moment I had known that we had been made, I had gotten a search team together. Both CIA agents and my own personal contacts are on the case. I must sit by this phone from dawn to dusk, and probably then some.

And all of this, it’s all for a girl that I had barely known for a week. But, Sydney wanted to find her, just like me. And from what I’m guessing, it’s for the same reason.

Because she had touched both of our hearts.

Chapter 8
A dark basement

I had barely seen what had happened. Before I knew it, the lights were out and I had been bound and gagged. And how I ever landed up here, I’ll never know. All because I had been knocked out by that damn coward. Whoever that coward is.

I am still gagged by this really foul tasting rag. But instead of bounded by rope that burned my skin any centimeter that I would move, I’m secured in this chair by metal chains.

So, I can’t really escape from this situation. My only hope is Sydney and Michael will figure it out. Because I don’t think I can make it. Not without any help from them.

Click, Click, Click

I jumped at the sound of those footsteps. My heart began to race. Those footsteps meant pain. And I don’t think I could handle that pain again.

The creak of the door hinges made me look at the floor. I didn’t want to see the person responsible for my pain this time. The door shut and the lights came on. And then, something remarkable happened.

He spoke.

“Hello Ms. Smith,” said that man. He was of fair built, someone I could possibly overturn, but something about those penetrating eyes and the accent warned me not to. “You can call me Sark. I’m going to become your new friend.”

He smiled. I despised that smile. That smile, it meant, something. Something evil. And evil, well, it’s not a good thing.

And he came towards me, with that same click of the shoes, and started to untie the gag around my mouth.

Just the opportunity that I needed.

I opened my mouth wide. He put his fingers on the rank rag to pull it out, and then, just as he was to pull it out, I bit down as hard as I could.

“You -----!” he screamed at me. I just smiled as the metallic taste of his blood filled my mouth. As disgusting as that may be, I still had to smile. I had caused him just a fraction of the suffering I had taken, but it was very satisfying.

Then I heard another click. I whole different click. I looked up, and my heart stopped.

“I would do it, but I need you,” he whispered. Then, without warning, the handle of his gun came flying at my head.

“Oomph,” I said. I couldn’t see anything. Red filled my vision. And I heard him laughing.

A few moments later, I was gagged again, and the door slammed shut.

I was left in the darkness again.

Chapter 9
CIA Headquarters

“Mike,” said Eric Weiss, his best friend, “Marshall has a development.” Marshall is the leading tech operator. He used to work for SD-6 as the technician under false pretenses, but was soon recruited to the CIA after SD-6 was taken down.

“What kind of development,” asked Vaughn.

“They have video footage,” informed Weiss. Vaughn’s eyebrows shot up in astonishment.

“Where the hell is he, and where the hell is the footage,” barked Vaughn.

“Well, I thought that you would get Sydney and you two would watch it together,” voiced Eric.

“I don’t think I should,” said Vaughn. “Maybe after I see the footage, but I want to make sure that it won’t upset her.”

“I think that I would be the best judge of that,” said Sydney’s angry voice. Michael turned around and saw the hurt and angry expression on her face. He instantly felt horrible for even thinking about omitting her from viewing the newfound footage.

“Syd, I just thought-“ began Michael.

“Well, that just shows that you shouldn’t think,” snapped Sydney. She didn’t mean to be that horrible, but she had been very hurt by him even suggesting it.

“Well,” Eric said, breaking an awkward silence, “why don’t we go and find Marshall and that footage.”

Before saying another word, Sydney went to find Marshall. Eric just looked at Michael, but Mike just passed him by to follow in Sydney’s wake.

Later…

“Oh, well, hello Ms. Bristow, Mr. Vaughn,” said Marshall. “I suppose you’re here for the video footage that I found? Well, why else wouldn’t you be here?” He looked for some kind of reaction, but after meeting two gazes that were filled with desperation, he started to continue.

“Well, after setting up a profile that could be Maggie’s face and bone structure, I put out the information on all regular video, or picture to find any traces of her. So, when that hadn’t worked in a day, I hacked my way into Mr. Sark’s personal facility surveillance.”

“Wait just a minute! You’re saying that Sark has Maggie,” said Sydney.

“Well, I say that the footage speaks for itself,” said Marshall. With that, he showed the video footage.

On the screen shown, Maggie was bound and gagged to a chair.

“Oh god,” muttered Sydney. Vaughn heard her murmur those words, and put his arm around her for support.

It shows her in confusion and then her fear when a door opens. After a few seconds, they see Sark appear on the screen undoing her gag. Then, without warning, she bit his hand.

“Woah,” said Vaughn. He didn’t know she had it in her. But then, for about the millionth time, his heart stopped. There, in that room, Sark was pointing a gun at her.

But, without warning, he hit her with the handle of the gun.

“Oh,” whispered Sydney, turning to bury her face in Vaughn’s embrace. His arms immediately went around her to comfort her. He stroked her hair while whispering words of comfort. After a few minutes, she disengaged from the embrace.

“We have to get her out of there,” said Sydney, in a steely voice.

“I’m already on it,” said Michael. With that, he took her hand and they walked out together to find their partner.

Chapter 10
CIA Headquarters

“Kendell, you’re not listening to us! God, Maggie’s out there, in one of Sark’s facilities!” said Sydney. She was getting very frustrated with Kendell. Vaughn and Sydney had been fighting with him for the past hour, and any second she was going to break his nose with a swift punch to the head.

“I need more conformation than that, Agent Bristow,” explained Kendell. “I just can’t send out a team of special op agents and risk their lives! It doesn’t work like that!”

“Sir, I can’t believe that you would let an agent die like that. Because after seeing that tape, well, if she gets any more treatment like that, she’ll probably be dead in two days!” said Vaughn in an edgy voice.

“Now, just here me out agents!” Kendell cried. “None of you knew what you were getting into. She’s more than likely scared, but that’s just a small price. What you didn’t know about this whole mission, and what I’m not supposed to be telling you, is that she was bait. We are using her to exactly pin point Sark’s location. But we can’t assume that this first sighting is her and Sark.”

Both Sydney and Vaughn stood there, speechless. After a few moments, Sydney recovered.

“You mean to tell me, to tell us, that you let her get kidnapped by Sark, just so we can find him? And she didn’t even know about it! God Kendell, I thought you were dirt, but this is lower than dirt,” Sydney said, raging.

“It wasn’t my idea, I just followed orders,” said Kendell.

“Then, sir, stop following orders and help another agent out,” said Vaughn.

“I can’t,” said Kendell. Before he knew it, he was slammed against a desk, with an arm cutting his airflow off.

“You listen to me, you son of a -----, you either die now, or you can get a team to help save Maggie,” whispered Sydney. “So, what’s your choice?”

“I’ll make the call,” he choked out.

“Good,” said Sydney, letting go of his neck.

Chapter 11
The basement

Maggie POV

If I have to stay in this basement for another day, I’m going to find someone and shoot them! I mean, why the hell hasn’t somebody found me yet? I know well enough that Sydney cares, and if Sydney cares, Vaughn cares. So, I know that they’re looking for me. And I’m more than positive they’ve found me.

So, why haven’t they come and got me?

Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I’m just some stupid kid that they had wanted gone in the first place. I know that I’m young, and I can be naïve at some things, and they probably thought I wasn’t capable and were glad that I was gone.

What the hell am I thinking? SNAP OUT OF IT! God, I know that they are a couple of the most caring people that someone could know! I just wish they were here.

Click, click, click

Oh god. Not him again! If he so much as touches me again, I think I’m going to die.

The door opened on those same squeaky hinges, and I could see the light seeping through the crack that the door opening was making. But the light was short lived.

Mr. Sark entered the room.

“Hello Ms. Smith,” he said in that same sweet voice. I hated that voice. I mean, I may be young, but I’m not stupid!

“Now, I was thinking about talking, but I’m not sure if I should take your gag out again,” he said. I smirked, not that he could see it. I could see his hand, the bandage still filling with blood.

“So, here’s what I propose. I take off your gag, fix the gash I made, and then talk,” he said. My head did hurt, and I’m sure it will more than likely get infected, if it wasn’t already. So, I guess to get a little you have to give a little.

I nodded a yes.

“I thought you would agree,” he said. He came towards me, with that same essence of power, and untied my gag. He took the rag out of my mouth, and even though I felt like biting him again, I withheld my urge.

He walked back towards the door. I didn’t say a word, if not out of fear, then for the basic thing of not knowing what to say. So I just watched. For any weakness, any flaw, just plain anything that would get me out of here.

He didn’t have a single one.

He walked back with a first aid kit, dragged over a chair, and started on my face. I looked at what he was doing, just out of habit. What was weird, but I didn’t question it, is that he washed out my wound with grayish tinged water. But it felt soothing, so I didn’t question it.

“So, Ms. Smith, you’ve been cooperative so far, but let’s just see how far the cooperation goes,” he said. I didn’t like the tone he used. Or the way he smiled and looked at me. It just wasn’t right.

Then he started to ask the questions.

“Ms. Smith, just who are you working for?”

yeah, mixed reactions...
but as to the "really long ways", i only posted it like that because i had it all like that on Word..but before i had it chapter by chapter...
sorry
