Anyone else hate fantasy?

We're on the same wavelength Alvin. I also still enjoy Dan Curtis's The STRANGE CASE of DR JEYKLL and MR HYDE (1968), The NIGHT STALKER (1972) & The NIGHT STRANGLER (1973).

Has anyone else seen the animated film WIZARDS (1977)? Mark Hamill was one of the voice actors.
Yes, they were all very good shows that kept one glued to the screen.

Not even The Neverending Story? How about titles that crossed genres like Krull?

Never seen the Never Ending Story, heard of it but no clue what it's even about. Krull sounds familiar but I can't think of anything specific from it.

It's still fantasy though unless you believe in Greek gods. Besides there's nothing contemporary about fantasy. It can be about just about anything in any setting.

True, it's just different fantasy for me I guess.

Kolchak still influences the genre today! A lot of shows can trace their heritage back to those movies & series.

Wizards is a very trippy movie. No matter how many times I've seen it, I always feel like I should be watching it in a small confined room with the lights dimmed and a lava light on.

Those shows had a special character that people liked. The writers knew the secret of getting the viewer's attention and keep it. Story flow and the character of each actor helps make each show special in a category by itself. Writers of today must find that character to build on for the shows or programs that they are creating to make each program special so that people can relate and become part of the program in the blending of the imaginative entertainment provided. Writers have to reach the people and get their attention and hold them to the story flow with events that attracts the imagination while each can relate to the surprising events in realistic ways. Fantasy, fiction and reality must blend to build a realistic fantasy or fiction show or program that will last generations like the Night Stalker and Dark Shadows. Kolchak managed to get the viewer's attention and keep it much like Barnabas Collins. Even a really far out fantasy can be seen as exciting and good when a touch of fantasy, fiction and reality are combined to the story flow and added to the characters.

Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken."
– Frank Herbert -

"Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens."
– Carl Jung -

These quotes are good examples of looking inward to find outward the things that make great or add to the story flow one is creating and also helps with the fantasy, fiction and reality to make the something special. They are also great guidelines for ones life.

To look within, to see, to imagine and to come to know is a great way of finding self and much more.

I think Neverending Story is one of the films that can make anyone find their inner kid and look at the world as full of infinite possibilities, like alot of other fantasy.

You would have to be pretty dead inside if you didn't like Neverending story!

Yes & No
I've pretty much had my fill of Knights, Wizards, Dragons, Vampires, Unicorns, Giant Flying Dogs & Werewolves.
Not to say all/every "take" is bad, it's just that it's been done to death (and then some).
I enjoy robots, aliens, disease, symbiotic, mutations invasions, takeovers, wars.
Cataclysmic, Apocalyptic, Disaster, cascading helpless dark endings, where our imagined superiority is revealed as being as rudimentary as an insects.
Simply because there's so much we don't know, and aren't even in a position to imagine them yet.
I guess I'm just tired of the retreading of the "standards", and that being passed off as fresh & new.
No matter the technology, or the time frame it is our nature that will be our most deadly opponent.
Our treason, our greed & deception, our lust & sloth that will be our undoing.
Live in denial with a sugar coating, yet it is deep within all of us, as an inoperable brain parasite is ...
lurking with an omnipresent awareness, for the moment when it will take control.
Then you will be a passenger in an out of body experience, in a vehicle which is you.
We are not the masters of anything, not even ourselves.:D

I agree with most of what you say on the imaginary view, however, why do you say we are not masters of ourselves? Even if seeing things through an imaginary program or movie we freely think, choose, accept or reject everything that is seen. But in the real world, even if one lives in a dictatorship one has free mental choice as to what to believe or not believe. Freedom to choose what and how we think and ultimately believe is all based on freely choosing or filtering out the undesirable information and gives us the choice to decide what we think we are or what we think we will be.

That very free choice suggests that we are masters of our mind and what we will accept. True we are influenced by outward environment but we still mentally select what things best fits our selected views that make up our persona and personality. We mentally freely choose what we believe or can accept as a reality that adds and builds our individuality and personality.

I would really like to understand why you believe we do not freely choose the choices of thoughts that are possible but we only select some and not all or everything presented. I understand that we are the sum total of selected thought based on environmental surrounding and the influence of Friends and everyone we meet.

No matter what is presented real or imaginary, we ultimately choose or have free choice conditional to environmental upbringing and worldly influences. Even the Sci-Fi we like or dislike makes us what we are or the sum total of everything we have seen, experienced, and accepted or rejected.

No matter what the circumstance, we have free choice to accept or reject and that makes us masters of self but not necessarily masters of the environment we live in.

Majority rule or an influencing force or overall mindset selects our world universally under the conditions we live in based on the system we have selected to use to guide us or the system we grow up in that selects the guidelines of our country, state or province.

Even a written script to be acted out is a matter of choice. Even with imagination we are masters to freely choose or think what we wish.

There is always choice. One says there is no choice to comfort themselves with the decision they've already made.
Therein lies the problem;
We must make correct decisions continuously all our lives, to fulfill what we deem to be a success/successful. We need only screw-up once for any degree of it (including all-to many generation from now), to end.
A narrow path we must walk.
Atop this, even if we're "perfect", our fate is whole or in part determined by others who we have little to no control over.
Finagle-factor, Heisenberg principle, luck.
A majority, or leaders can be wrong. Lynch Mob, Street Gang, Nazi Regime.
There must be faith, to help a form of morality, decency to rise. It cannot be a hodgepodge of special interest freak shows, where anything is right.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, (as horrible as it sounds), all inclusive (one size fits all) is "Doomed" to failure. There is no way all will be happy, and to preach this is folly.
Governments operate on convenience, not conscience.
To have control you must separate, or influences beyond your control will determine the outcome of the situation.
Be that a BFF, a family, a town, State, Country. If you lose your "Identity", you lose control.
Dust in the Wind (cheap, I know), yet appropriate.
A majority law is "Mob Rule"... Mobocracy.
A "far-fetched" example ...
10 men & 1 woman take a vote. 6 men vote to rape this woman and it becomes law.
If you are one of the 4 who voted not to, are you a menace to society to be hunted & jailed?

True. Majority does rule for better or worse. We however do have choice to live according to that majority rule or move on to a place that agrees more closely to your beliefs even if one has to choose a location where the only rule is what you make.

One need not feel trapped by a system that imposes. The dreamer must dream and build according to his ambitions and beliefs. In order to awaken one must live according to those beliefs. To do otherwise is to restrict all that one could otherwise be.

Even within a system of majority rule one can find ways of self expression to enable one to live within the guidelines one has set. The trick would be to insure the majority rules are not broken in so doing that which allows your Spirit to soar. We can choose to live and be that which we want but one would select an area that is more free and open from majority rule. There are vast areas where one can find oneself and soar with the birds if one chooses.

The choice is still up to the beholder to choose. One need not feel trapped in a world or ways not of his choosing. Each when all is said and done must seek and find one's way through life that makes one happy. The guidelines of society or majority rule allows room for individual growth according to ways, faith and belief.

I guess positive thinking is needed in place of negative thinking of hopelessness. One must seek until one finds that which makes one happy and begin from there to learn to be free of what one does not wish to be part of. There may be changes made that can prevent culture and or others ways to interfere in one's chosen ways according to belief or faith.

There is always going to be systems that force the polpulation according to whatever rules are set. The trick is to find a way to live where one can be what one chooses.

One need not be a prisoner of the environment that one was born in. Even in countries that control society one can find solace in how one chooses to live. Freedom is a life-game that is mostly played in the mind and we each must make our peace and live with our choice.

The path we walk is the path we choose and if we screw up we stand up again from falling down and continue on to perfect and undo that mistake. The effort to correct will have its own rewards. Again, choice decides the way you live according to one's actions good or bad. Cause does affect the outcome and one must take action to insure the outcome is positive.

To have control you must separate the influences beyond your control which will determine the outcome of the situation that best suits your beliefs. To gain or regain your identity one can choose to find a location that suits one's needs and beliefs and learn to keep separate that which tends to restrict, if one is allowed movement. If not freedom can be found in how one chooses to live within the environment one finds self.

Mob rule is no worse than countries that dictate how one is to live, but even in such conditions one can find freedom that cannot be taken away. No one or no system is perfect, that is why we have individual choice to seek and find what best suits us according to beliefs, faith and ways.

Ah there is more than one "Ram" amongst the sheep.
I'm already at a place of my choosing, and dug in like an Alabama tick. What I need to do, I do. What I don't need to do, I don't.

I'm neither trapped nor suffocating, yet the majority of the world is.
It's very hard to dig up any more pity, the tears have dried up.

Don't feel sorry for me, it's not necessary. I think I'll go work in the garden. If you were here, I'd give you all the leaf lettuce you could carry. It's been a banner year for that (two kinds). Hopefully the rain will ease up, and a blight wont effect the tomato crop as it did last year.

We'll can & freeze salsa again this year. Meat I take to the butcher for dressing & fish I smoke. The land she is a generous Mistress. Licenses are in hand as well as "tags".

We have good neighbors on every side, hope you have the same,

Peace.
