Chapter one – Wind Dance of the Fairies.

She peeked outside the curtains, and almost instantly found them. A smile instantly lit up her face, even though their presence was more than common. Since she started school, she couldn’t remember one event on which both, or at least one of her parents, weren’t present. Her grandfather would usually come as well, and now Melanie.

Even the regularity didn’t make their presence any less especial. No matter how busy they were, they would always manage to come, and she loved them for that.

“Ready, Ms. Bristow?”

“Am I ever ready?”

The teacher laughed.

“You are always ready. The only one who doesn’t seem to believe that is you.”

“The day I think I’m ready, feel free to tell my parents to take me off ballet classes.”

“I wouldn’t do that. You’re our best dancer.”

“Don’t say that out loud, Mrs. Lars. The girls might not like to hear it.”

“The girls agree with me on this.”

It was true. The technique she was quickly mastering, allied with her innate grace, made the teacher wonder if she had ever saw any fourteen-year-old who could dance quite like Ailish Bristow.

It was a unanimous understanding between the other girls, and they tried not to be jealous. The fame was well deserved. Ailish practiced more than any one of them.

Ailish didn’t reply. She looked down, blushing faintly under her makeup.

“You’re on now, dear. Make me proud.”

Ailish smiled.

“I’ll try.”

Taking a deep breath, she entered the stage, automatically blocking out the audience that crowded the school’s theater, after a last sideways glance at her parents.

It was her first solo presentation.

At the audience, Vaughn wordless took Sydney’s hand, and squeezed it.

“She’ll do great.” He whispered.

“I know.” Sydney whispered back, with a smile.

Oblivious to her parents’ nervousness, Ailish danced as if no one was watching her, and it felt like the music had been made for her to dance it.

Time didn’t seem to have passed at all when the raucous sound of applauses brought her back to Earth.

With one graceful move, she thanked them, and walked away. Backstage, the dancers were lining themselves up to the group performance. She ducked her way to the supplies table, and poured herself some water, her hands were shaking slightly.

“Aiiiiiiish!”

She set the glass on the table, swiftly turning around, with a huge grin on her face.

“There’s my future ballerina.” Ailish exclaimed, as she picked her sister up in her arms, arching her back to balance herself. “Whoa, you’re heavy.”

Melanie was seven now, and even though she had learned a long time ago how to pronounce her sister’s name correctly, she had never stopped using the form she used when she was two, and couldn’t pronounce the ‘L’.

Melanie smacked a kiss on her cheek.

“You were like a fairy.” She exclaimed, excited.

“I was?”

Melanie nodded, and Vaughn gently collected her to his arms, not wanting to give his older daughter a permanent back damage.

“You were wonderful, darling.” He said, hugging Ailish tightly, and settling Melanie on his hip.

“Thanks, dad.” Ailish said, with a full-on smile lightening her face, still flushed from dancing. “Where’s mom?”

“She had to take a phone call. She wasn’t sure if she would be able to stay.” Vaughn said, rather apologetically.

Ailish’s smile wavered a little, but didn’t leave her face. She understood.

“We need to celebrate your success.” Vaughn affirmed, passing one arm around Ailish’s shoulders. “Unless you have plans with your friends.”

“What are your plans?”

“The Kings are playing in about two hours.”

“I’m there.” Ailish said, without a second thought. “Pizza first?”

“Pizza first.” Melanie seconded.

“Sure, pizza first.” Vaughn agreed.

Ailish was about to say something, but found herself being encircled from the back with arms she knew as well as her own.

Vaughn removed his hand from her shoulders, as she turned to properly hug her mother.

“I thought you had to work.” She said.

“So did Kendall, but I guess I proved you both wrong.”

“Thanks for staying, mom.”

“What, and miss all the hockey fun?”

“And pizza.” Melanie was sure to remember.

“And pizza.” Sydney nodded gravely. She turned to Ailish, raising a bag at her hand. “Clothes.”

“Thank you.” Ailish said, kissing her mother’s cheek. “I’ll be right back.”

Sydney nodded. Ailish was already a few steps away when her mother called her.

“You were great, by the way.” Sydney said. “We’re all proud of you, honey.”

Ailish grinned, and try to hide her satisfaction.

“Thanks mom.” She said, shrugging and going to the dressing room.

She knew her parents would probably be proud of her even if all her abilities limited themselves to chewing gum and being the drummer of a punk group with doubtful taste, but it didn’t matter. It felt good to know she had done something to make her family proud.

She remembered her tragic attempt at playing the piano. Thankfully she had soon realized that she wasn’t fit for the musical world, otherwise she was afraid her parents would be driven into madness with an amazing speed.

She changed quickly into the jeans and shirt her mother had brought her, slipping her sore feet on her worn out sneakers with extreme delight.

“Ready.” She announced.

“Let’s go, then.” Sydney said, passing an arm around her shoulder.

Ailish nodded, and they went.

*-*-*

She felt claustrophobic, which lately was becoming somewhat usual. No one spared her a second glance as she walked down the street, eyes locked on her shoes, hair in a respectable bun behind her head. And yet she felt like she was being watched from every corner.

Maybe if she could raise her face, if she could stand up to them all, and say “I’m here, come and try to get me.” But she couldn’t, it was too dangerous. It was dangerous for her to even be walking around the city in the daylight.

Time and necessity had turned her into a night creature, powerful and undetectable. Ethereal, as some would say in hushed whispers to each other, fearing the presence, fearing the name.

She was unused to the light, to the people, to the buzzing sounds and movements of a big city. It annoyed her, it made her dizzy, it made her long for the safeness of her office, with its dark blinds that kept the world away.

But she had business to do, and she didn’t intend on letting her purely psychological problems to stop her. It was all about compartmentalizing.

She tucked her hair behind her ear, turning on her comm. link while doing so.

“Is everything set?” She muttered.

“Ready to go.”

“Let’s go, then.”
