Classics

Do you know why Dickins wrote so long and elaborately? He got paid by the word to write... ;)

My favorite classics...

Black Beauty
The Secret Garden
Anne of Green Gables (I love all of the Anne series actually...)
The House of Mirth
The Fountainhead (if that even counts as a classic, I have no clue)
Jane Eyre (but I didn't like Wuthering Heights as much)
The Good Earth

There are more... but I can't think of them right now. I think I need sleep!

My favorite Classic would be"

"Wuthering Heights" ... read it and fell in love with the story ...

I love reading, it keeps me sane ...

"Of Mice and Men" also very good ...
"Lord of the Flies" (loved the book, not the movie)

ok i just finsihed Poisonwood Bible and think that it will become a classic, one of the best books i have ever read, the story just captivates you and when i finished i cried because it was over!lol, yah im a dork!hehehe
anyway, im now onto pride and prejudice which i have been wanting to read forever, and i finally got a copy today!im excited(wow who gets excited over new books?!ME!)

me too! I go nuts when I'm in a bookstore. First I sniff the air, because the smell of spankin' new hardcovers is just one of my favorite smells, and then I start to browse....

i konw the scent of books is wonderful, i love the smell of an old libary for some odd reason!LOL, and new books too fresh from the press with its stiff papers!wow i think i like reading alittle too much oh well, im already fifteen chapters into pride and prejudice, i had the whole drive to and from dance!LOL, i love it so far!LOL

I agree!! I used to volunteer at a library. I loved the musty old smell. It's so... comfortable, you know? The Barnes and Noble near my house always smells like coffee, but hey, I like that smell too!

Victoria King... the Poisonwood Bible is incredible! And I'm not just saying that 'cause one of the characters has my name... ;)

I'm rereading The House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton, right now. My copy of it has an introduction by Anna Quindlen, who brought up a good point. Wharton's best known novel is Ethan Frome, mostly because a lot of HS classes read it. However, it really isn't her strongest, because the characters are 2 dimensional. They're 2 dimensional because they are not the high society people (like from House of Mirth and Age of Innocence) that she knew very well (being brought up among those people). Not to say that Ethan Frome is bad, of course. Wharton was a great writer.

lol, what is your name? i loved that book, i still think about it all the time, it made me think of everything differently.
and i really liked ethan frome but yes there isnt much to the characters and it also leaves you to wonder if mattie was really that full of life and wonderful because it was seen through the eyes of many stories compiled and most of it was gathered from people who were very good friends with mattie, the hales etc. so im always wondering if she was that good becuase her red ribbon could mean more than passion and life.(yes great book, i really like it!and i iwill have to read house of mirth, another on my long list now!!LOL)

Same here! That book was great. I wrote a lot of short essays on it. And my name is Leah... who I think was one of the most interesting characters in the novel, 'cause she starts out being her father's shadow and eventually opposes him the most.

I haven't read Ethan Frome yet! I started reading the Age of Innocence while at the bookstore, until they closed for the night! I'm starting Prozac Nation within the next week... it'll be exciting. I don't think this book will hit the classics list anytime though.

omg i hafta read Prozac Nation! Everyone is telling me about it!
I've read very few classicals- TO Kill A Mockingbird is it! haha but i'm on Ethan Frome right now! and i need to read P&P, Posoinwood Bible, and Jane Eyre and The Counte of Monte Cristo---- but the problem is there are sooo many versions (abriged or not?? ahhh!) and hmmm.... what's this Scarlett Letter you guys talk about?

scarlett letter by nathienal hawthorne, one of the best books, i loved it but many ppl in my class didnt but i love symbolism and wordy sentences!LOL! hope you love it!

Reading Prozac Nation now. Wow! It's depressing... which I expected... but I didn't expect to relate so much to it! I'm reading it slow, 'cause I think too much at one time will really bring me down. But so far, I highly recommend it!

I need to read Pride and Prejudice! I always see it in the bookstore, and pick it up, but I end up buying something else. I also want to read The Mandarins, by Simone de Beauvoir... it won the highest literary award possible in France... and I think it's a french classic... so therefore this is not off topic. LoL

"In her most famous novel, The Mandarins, Simone de Beauvoir takes an unflinching look at Parisian intellectual society at the end of World War II. In fictionally relating the stories of those around her --Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Arthur Koestler, Nelson Algren --de Beauvoir dissects the emotional and philosophical currents of her time. At once an engrossing drama and an intriguing political tale, The Mandarins is the emotional odyssey of a woman torn between her inner desires and her public life."

That's the description from Amazon.com. Since it's by Beauvoir, it's existential... and very honest.

that sounds really good! i'm going to add it to my reading list... oh. my. god. I HAVE TO READ SO MANY BOOKS! gahhh... i'll never finish!

thanks! that does sounds really good(adds to list looks at list and goes crazy like nance just did!i have so many but oh well, at least i have excuses to lay out in the sun this summer!READING!LOL)

omg i love the summer because i actually have time to read! --it's what i love to do at the beach! just sit there in the sun and *read* lol! :D but the bad thing about summer is the looong wait for alias! :(

i know that is the bad thing about summer!very bad but at least we have the dvd and premiere to look forward too and tons of books to read not to mention the fifth hp book coming out and time to just hang out and come on here and talk for hours!LOL!
