college clique

i'm taking a psych class this quarter that's three hours long once a week. and it's at 9 am.

Yikes!! What class is this?

I hate lecture theaters. Since Augie is a small school, I only had one class last year that was like that, and the lights would be dim and it was at 10 am, I think, and it was soo unstimulating, so staying awake was always a chore. However, they'd make the room freezing, so we'd all be shivering too. Ick.

Is greeklife (frats and sororities) a big thing at your universities? It was at Augie, and it would drive me INSANE! 'Cause when I went to visit back in senior year, the tour guides were all, "greek life is not a big thing here at all!" but I got my hands on facts last year, and 34% of the campus is in greeklife. That's a huge number. Only like 2% of IL State University is in greeklife. These guys and gals totally think that they run the school. That was part of the reason why I left. I'm completely not a sorority girl.

My school is antiGreek we do have sororities and fraturnaties, but only at the most 10% of total student and it's not like you can only hang out with your brothers or sisters, it's very open. One of my closest friends is a Phi MU

that three hour class is impulse control disorders. it sounds pretty interesting (they're going to cover shopping and computer addiction so i better stay in that class. ;)). but another bad thing about it is that the prof gives you the lecture outlines before every class so you don't even really have to stay awake to take notes.

and i'm so not a sorority girl either. *high fives existentialist* one of my roommates is and our whole house got into this HUUUUGE argument because of it. i've been trying to keep an open mind about them because one of my close friends is in a sorority but because of what happened, i'm on the edge of really despising them.

but as for general greek life on campus - it's pretty pathetic. well, pathetic compared to other campuses. we don't have a frat row or anything. in fact, none of the sororities or frats here have houses (which is what also led to the huge argument).

ucsd focuses A LOT on academics which explains the small greek life and even smaller athletics life. we don't even have a football team. (although i'm actually glad we don't) it's so sad. no wonder we got the nickname uc socially dead.

Augie doesn't have any frat or sorority houses either. But somehow, they multiplied. One girl in my religion class tried to convince us that, as a member of greeklife, she is discriminated against. We couldn't get through her head how that was a bit different than minority races being discriminated against.

My roommates last year weren't big on social sororities, but they both joined the music frat, which is a little better, but definately more cliquish. Most of my gal friends pledged last year and I'm still friends with them. I don't mind partying, 'cause I like dancing, but not all the time (there are a LOT of parties at Augie) and the whole idea of paying to be a member of some social clique... I don't have many close friends, but at least I didn't have to pay anything. And greeklife is expensive!

Thank God you decided against it. i hate Duke or as I spell DOOK. It's also over 30 grand a year

I was going to apply, 'cause they have a GREAT equestrian team and my mom really wanted me to go there. My parents are paying for my college education (since it seems like I'm going to be the only one of 3 kids to go to college), and my dad told me not to worry about tuition (which of course I do), but I was also looking at one point at Amherst College, in MA... tuition there is over $40 thousand a year!!

yeah, i just don't like the idea of PAYING people to be my friends. i know there's more to it than that, but that's just how i see it. there's just a ton of things i don't like about sororities. the silly rituals they do are just ridiculous. greek like is seriously just like high school - cliques and drama 24/7. i'm sorry, but i thought high school was OVER. grow up, people!! grrrr...

okay, sorry, i didn't realize i would go off like that, but seriously, i blame my roommate's sorority for ruining our house. we were such good friends before, and then the stupid sorority entered the picture and just poisoned us with drama.

anyway, okay, enough of that. tuition sucks. my parents tell me not to worry about it either since i'm an only child, but i still can't help it. and grad school will be even MORE expensive, ugh. :(

Aw, it's okay to rant like that. I agree! Life has its own drama... no one needs these greeklife groups adding to it! There were so many petty arguments last year that I wanted to bash my head against the wall.

Oh man, I don't even want to think about grad school tuition... and med school! I will definately be working through grad and med schools to help my parents out. Especially since my dad told me that he will put a down payment on an apartment for me when I go to grad school... I feel way too spoiled.

I am spoiled. My parents pay for almost everything. The thing I pay for is my cash I use mainly to buy alcohol with. I definetly have daddy's credit card

i go to the university of suck lol...the words "social events" or "social life" are never uttered here lol...its so boring. just about everyone loads up and drives to the city to go to clubs and stuff.

yeah, me too. :D

college life has been ho-hum lately. well. i have my first midterm of the quarter next thursday so i plan to be studying this weekend but we'll see how that goes. ;)

congratulations, fledermaus!! :D

yeah, after applications, deciding where to go is the hardest part. but now it's just a relaxing ride until you start. ^_^

I LOVED shopping for dorm stuff! All my life, I wanted to having matching sheets and towels and all that, and I finally did! :D It was exciting. I love my college stuff, even though right now they're in boxes in the basement. I had a hard time finding fun sheets that were extra long twin though.

I should start hearing responses to colleges in about 2 or 3 weeks! AHHH I'm going crazy.

yeah, finding the extra long twin sheets were a bit annoying. especially since dorms are the only places that have extra long twin beds so basically after a year (or two, for me), the extra long twin sheets become useless. oh well. the sheets i had were cute. :D

and oh joy, college app rejections/admissions season is upon us. that's so funny that you would mention that because i was watching the today show while i was getting ready this morning and they had a segment on how to handle rejection from colleges. :P and i was reading the school newspaper today and ucsd has admitted about 17,500 freshman next year.
