Come Back...or I'll Come

Title: Come Back…or I’ll Come
Author: btvaughn
Disclaimer: I don’t own any part or thing of Alias.
Rating: PG-13 (I’m not really good at determining this!)
Genre: angst I guess, but some might call it “meant to be”…..
Summary: Sydney faces a deep suffering within her heart and is forced to deal with it.
The story takes place just as SD-6 is taken down, however something that didn’t happen in Phase One just happened. (It’ll make sense later!)

A/N Alright, I’ve had the idea for this one-parter fic for months now, and I’m finally able to find the words for it. Please review and tell me what you think.

Syd’s thoughts are in italics.
The poems, that I have no idea who wrote, are in bold. (It’s one of my favorites)

Syd POV
Feeling a cool breeze ripple through the air, Sydney Bristow squeezed her eyes shut. By preventing any tear from falling, she could at least try to ignore the pain shooting through the inside of her body. Tears trickled out of her closed eyes and down onto her dry lips. As the salty liquid reached her tongue, Sydney pulled her blood-shot eyes open. No, No, No. This can’t be happening. I never imagined this day would ever come. Taking a quick swipe of the tears on her face, she watched as Eric Weiss sat down.
The time had come. After so many days, weeks, and months, she had to say goodbye to the person who had made her life a reason for living. The person who had changed her life for the better in every possible way was gone and never to be found by her again.
Pulling on her skirt hem, Sydney stood up and walked over to the podium in the middle of the green grass and flowers. Looking over at the crowd of tear-stained cheeks and heartbroken faces, she began to speak.
“Many of you might not know me personally, but all of us of united here today for one reason and one reason alone, to pay our respects to a wonderful person. We are here to say goodbye to a man who managed to affect all of our lives in some way. That man was Michael Vaughn.
“I met Vaughn about a year ago when I walked into CIA headquarters. As the weeks went by, he took on the role of my handler, as we attempted to bring down a group called SD-6. I hated what I did, but Vaughn helped me through the entire experience. For any reason whatsoever, he would be there for me, even if it were just to talk. I would have never made it through these past months without him.
“Before Michael Vaughn entered my life, I was a complete mess. My fiancée had just died and I was working for a horrific organization, but Vaughn still made everything right. He became the only person I could trust and talk to. He was the reason I woke up in the morning, the reason I went to work, and the reason why I never gave up on love,” Sydney continued.
The tears poured down her face and she felt her voice beginning to choke, but still she went on. “When my fiancée was gone, I thought that was the end, but I was wrong. It was after I met Vaughn that I discovered what a deep and powerful kind of love existed. Yet because of work, we could not be together and I could not tell him how I felt.
“Then we took down SD-6 and I finally had the opportunity to tell Vaughn I loved him. Though when I went to find him inside the building we had just destroyed, all I found was a story that he was gone.“ Closing her eyes for a second, she remembered the pain and suffering of that night.

Flashback
“Vaughn,” Sydney called out. Seeing Eric Weiss a few feet in front of her, she ran up to him. “What’s going on Eric? Where’s Vaughn?”
As a tear slipped out of his eye, Sydney just knew something terrible was wrong. “What happened?” she whispered.
“Someone fired at him,” he started. “But, oh God, he didn’t have his vest on. Mike had just taken it off and was going to look for you, but….”
Feeling the wetness on her cheek, Sydney looked away. “Can I go see him?”
“No. He’s gone.”
End Flashback

Slowly facing everyone again, Sydney pulled out all of her strength to finish, “Now all I feel is hurt. Vaughn never knew how much I loved him. I never had the opportunity to tell him that he was my life, my heart, and my soul.
“People always say some questions are better left unanswered, but this is one time I find that statement absolutely wrong. There is one question I wish I had an answer for, yet I know I’ll never find it. Did Michael Vaughn ever love me as much as I loved him?
“So, all I am left to do is try and say goodbye to the greatest man I ever met and loved.” Finishing in a sob, Sydney put her face into her hands and sat down in the chair again.

Every night I imagine touching your face,
But there is nothing there but empty space.
My dreams are filled with visions of eternal bliss,
Sealed by your tender and heavenly kiss.
I awake from my dreams,
Yearning to hold you near,
Searching but not finding,
Bringing me to tears.

That night at the pier

Empty words filled her heart. Loving memories held no comfort for her soul. Sydney was devoid of any happiness. With Vaughn gone, life had and would never have any meaning.
Oh, Vaughn! Why did you have to go? You never deserved to die. I should have been the one with the funeral, never you. My love for you is so great. I can’t go on without you.
“Yes, you can,” a voice spoke from in front of her.
No, it can’t be….
“Vaughn?” Sydney breathed. Standing, or at least floating, over the Pacific Ocean was the form of Michael Vaughn.
How can it be him? Vaughn is…..dead.
“I am Syd. I died a week ago.”
“How…why…are you here?” Sydney frantically asked. “Are you coming back?”
“No. I just came to see you again and to tell you something I should have told you so long ago,” Vaughn replied. “This morning at the funeral, you wanted an answer to a question. And all I can tell you is, yes. Always and forever it will be yes…”
Closing her eyes, Sydney tried to send her mind back to that gloomy morning.
Oh, God…
Some questions are better left unanswered, but there is one I wish I knew the answer to. Did Vaughn ever love me, the way I loved him?
He loved me…

As cool tears slipped down her cheek, Sydney pulled her eyes open to face Vaughn. “I love you with every part of who I am.”
“Thank-you, Sydney, for loving me and allowing me to find a way to tell you I love you too,” Vaughn whispered back to her.
As his glowing image started to fade into the night sky, Sydney panicked and tried to reach her arms out to him. “No, Vaughn! Don’t go! Don’t leave me, again!” The tears poured out of her eyes, blurring her vision of the final receding figure of Michael Vaughn.
“I love you, Syd. Never forget that….”
Pulling herself onto the railing, Sydney cried out again, “Vaughn! You can’t go. I’m nothing without you. Please stay with me! I love you.” Extending her arm, she attempted to touch the final glow of him. All she could feel was thin air.
When the final wisp of light faded, she withdrew her arm and dropped herself off of the railing and onto the ground. As sobs wracked her body to pieces, she could only hope for the reappearance of his vision.
Come back….Come back! Vaughn I love you so much! I can’t go on with you!
With the final tear out of her eye, Sydney stood up to gaze out at the water, where Vaughn had just been. I will not be the same without you. There is nothing I want more than to be with you. And with you is the only place I will remain forever.
Standing up on the railing of the pier, Sydney’s heart began to race with a desire to be with Vaughn…until the end of time. Conjuring his image in front of her view, she whispered, “I love you,” one last time and let her body drop to the water. I’m coming, Vaughn. I don’t care if you want me to live. I refuse to go a day without you next to me. Wait for me in Heaven…I’m on my way.

I lie there thinking about how you showed me love,
Making me wonder if you were sent from heaven above.
I fall asleep knowing that you are in my mind and heart,

The Next Day
As the sun set the following day, a couple began on a walk along the side of the pier. At one point, they stopped at the exact area where Sydney had taken her life and glanced out over the ocean and into the sky.
Gasping, the woman squinted into the air, “Honey, what’s that?”
“I’m not sure, but as crazy as it sounds, it looks like two people,” he responded, “a brown haired woman and a sandy haired male holding hands and smiling.”
“How strange, I see it too. Oh well, it must just be our mind playing a trick on us,” she reasoned.
“Yeah, I’m sure we’re just seeing things” the man replied.
Squinting into the disappearing outlines of the objects again, the woman whispered, “Maybe we’re both wrong. What if it is something else? We’re staring into the Heavens after all and we only see angels there.”

Smiling into the fading sunlight, she watched as the man and woman put their arms around one another and walked off into the orange and red glow…together.

For love is eternal, and we shall never be apart.
