Chapter 5

Resting directly inside the folder were polaroid photos taken just moments before. They showed Sydney’s arms and legs, all beaten, bruised and broken. There were also close up shots of the wounds on her back and stomach. They were horrid. Cuts, deep enough to have needed stitches immediately, broken bones, and discolored bruises covered her body. Not one inch of her skin appeared to be unscathed. Jack had to bite the inside of his cheek to fight the wave of nausea rising up in him.

“What is it?” Vaughn asked, rushing over to Jack upon hearing him gasp. When Jack didn’t answer or hand him the folder, Vaughn grabbed it out of his hands. One look at the contents however, and Vaughn’s knees gave out from under him. He collapsed to the floor, overcome with shock. “Oh god,” Was all he could manage. After recomposing himself, Jack reclaimed the folder, for there was more in it. Below the photos were written descriptions of her injuries. The were just as heinous as the pictures. In the doctors report located at the back of the folder, Jack found that they were keeping Sydney until further notice. They had given her blood, but they still had to make sure that her body wouldn’t reject it. There was still no way to tell that she wouldn’t at any moment collapse to the floor and not get up again.
Jack had enough. He had little patience as far as her daughter’s care went to begin with, but knowing how unstable she was already, he refused the idea of her waking up in a room fu of strangers. He arose from his seat, and began to make his way towards Sydney's room. No one dared to stop him. Vaughn was quick to pick up on what he was doing, and jumped to his feet to follow.
For about twenty minutes they waited in silence, sitting in two chairs in the empty hospital room. Soon, doctors carted Sydney in, and laid her on the bed in the center of the room. The anesthesia they had given her had yet to wear off. Jack took this time to ask the doctors what they knew.

“Will my daughter be all right?” He asked the doctor who appeared to be in charge.

“Well sir, we’re not sure yet, but we plan on keeping our eyes on her. There was a bullet embedded in her torso, the specifics are in the report. Anyway, we got it out, and sewed up everything we could. She’s still pretty shaky, but we’re hoping for the best.” Jack nodded, and the doctor made his exit. Vaughn couldn’t take his eyes off of Sydney’s limp form. He was still in the process of grasping that she was back. He wouldn’t loose her again, he couldn’t. Anger welled up in him, how could someone do this to her? She hadn’t done anything wrong, Sydney wasn’t a bad person. Vaughn gingerly reached out and took her hand in his.

“I love you,” He whispered. Jack had been sitting on the other side of the room, considering what the doctor had told him. At Vaughn’s statement however, his head snapped up, and he looked directly at Vaughn.
