Heijdemann:
As a student at IGAD (International Game & Architecture Design) there are a lot of classes. Luckily, there is a good balance between classes that learn practical skills and classes that teach you theory. One class that combines these is called Game Production. A bit similar to GameLab, it’s main objective is to have you get to know how the game industry works. Depending on the lecture, you’ll be listening and talking about development cycles, an a-z of publishing, and more.
The focus of GP’s assignments in the last part of my 1st year focused on intellectual property, and all the strings and problems that are attached to them. The reasoning behind this is that as a game developer, the chances you’ll be working on a project based on an already existing IP are pretty high. The final assignment: design and pitch a free to play game based on a famous IP. These were luck of the draw, and my team (with two other teammembers) got a wildcard. For me Free to Play has always been synonymous with MMO’s, and we chose to work on The Walking Dead.
There were several reasons for choosing TWD. First of all, it’s a great comic (or graphic novel if you will), tv series and game and I’m a big fan. Second, the setting and the quality of the story lends itself perfectly for a sandbox MMO. Having played a LOT of these and having decent experience with Free to Play MMO’s, it wasn’t a hard choice to make. The result? A short game design document, listed below. All writing was done by me.
