Chapter 4
After what seemed like an eternity for both Sydney and Vaughn, Jack let go. There was an awkward silence as Syd and Vaughn stared at each other in amazement.
“Dad, are you okay? I mean, we didn’t expect you do be exactly happy about this,” said Sydney.
“Yeah, of course I am. Sydney, I’ve never been really accepting of your boyfriends as of yet but I still want the best for you. When Danny asked my permission to marry you I was stunned. I mean, I hardly knew the guy. But Vaughn…well…trust me, I know him. I’ve seen his records. I don’t care who you marry Sydney, as long as you are happy. I know that Agent Vaughn is who will keep you happy,” Jack replied with an endearing smile.
“Well, that’s great dad. We’re glad you are so accepting.” Syd wasn’t quite sure how to respond to her father. She’d never seen him like this before.
“Now, just because I’m happy about your engagement doesn’t mean I’m happy about other things. I appreciate you notifying me of your…arrangement but I still don’t like the fact that you two are running away from the CIA,” Jack said as his smile went away and the all-too-stern Jack came back.
“Now Jack, you don’t understand. Neither of us wants to live this life anymore. We can’t take the stress. Besides, I want to be able to spend time with my wife outside of work,” Vaughn stated as he gently wrapped his arm around Sydney’s waist, not at all embarrassed being that it was in front of her father. “We hope you can respect our wishes and keep us out of any CIA activity regarding Sloane and Derevko.”
Sydney and Vaughn left the conference room after they’d persuaded Jack not to involve them in CIA work any longer. They both went their separate ways, but only to collect the remaining items they’d left in their desks. They met back up and left the building…together.

Vaughn was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car and was headed towards Syd’s apartment.
“Vaughn…I mean, Michael?” said Syd.
Vaughn seemed a little bit shocked, as he’d never heard Sydney call him Michael before. “Yes,” he replied.
“I thought we were going to do something special today,” Syd said, remembering back to the warehouse earlier that day.
“We are. It’s a surprise. Just don’t get too excited but it’s not a big surprise or anything. It’s just something we’ve never done before. Well, I have, but it will be new for you. Don’t worry,” he said reassuringly,” you’ll like it. He took her hand with his and gently planted a sweet kiss. Then he smiled his to-die-for smile and made Sydney almost melt in her seat.
“Why are we going to my place then?” asked Sydney.
“Because there are a few things we need to pick up there.”

Vaughn pulled the car into Sydney’s driveway and turned off the engine. “Syd, you’re not going in,” he said placing his hand over hers as she went to undo her seatbelt.
“But…I don’t understand. Why can’t I go into my own house?”
“It’s part of the surprise. Just stay here. Remember…you can trust me,” Vaughn said with his sweet smile again. He lightly kissed Sydney on her forehead and then again on her lips. She them remembered why she loved him so much.

Vaughn made multiple trips in and out of Sydney’s house. He did not make her close her eyes but he didn’t let he know what he was doing either. He went in empty-handed and came out with big boxes. After three trips inside and three boxes tightly squeezed into the back seat of the car, Vaughn jumped back into the driver’s seat and started the car.
“I know I’m not supposed to know what’s going on, but what’s in the boxes?” Syd couldn’t help but be curios.
“Nothing…important. I didn’t rob you or anything. Just wait and see. It will only be another 15 minutes or so until you find out what’s going on.” Vaughn said, loving the suspense he’d built up for the love of his life.

15 minutes later, just as Vaughn had promised, they approached a house unfamiliar to Sydney.
“We’re here,” said Vaughn excitedly.
“Where are we?” asked Syd.
All Vaughn could say was, “This is where I live.”
