Sports Cricket: Ashes test 1 England v Australia

Captain
Right time to bring the break away U.S back to the Empire fold with a sport of leather on willow. Chaps and Chapeses we're talking Ashes cricket, Australian Bogans vs England Never Do wells.

Day 1 is upon us, 4 minutes out from hostilities, get your gin and tonics sorted, match reports later in the day and following stumps.

Tally ho Australia, time to put the English on their rears!

England have won the toss and elected to bat, would imagine this means no life in the Cardiff pitch. Some really strange pre-match entertainment, seems they might have forgotten to, I don't know, play some cricket.

Right adding a slice of lemon to my G&T, yes I know heroic step, but given the lack of play some decisions need to be made early.

Stumps Day 1

England 343/7 (Root 134, Ballance 61, Stokes 52)

The first session belonged to Australia who ripped through the English top order taking 3 for 80 odd, it looked like England might collapse in the post lunch session but Joe Root came to the rescue with a timely century to setup a lashing approach to scoring. At stumps England are in a reasonable position, though I would Australia on top at this stage, though a good morning tomorrow could turn the tables with Ali still at the crease and looking like he might be after runs. Anything over 400 is going to be a good score for England from here, though I would imagine the Aussie quicks will rip through the tail in the first hour.

For those wondering test cricket is played over five days with two innings for each team, assuming they are needed.

Stumps Day 2

England 430 (Ali 77, Starc 5/114)

Australia 264/5 (Rogers 95)

England's tail wag with almost 100 runs being added in the first session, the lower order ably supporting Ali who made the most of things. Australia finally finished the English innings off, indicating perhaps the Cardiff pitch held few demons for batsmen. In reply Rogers looked set to score a century, falling just short, while a few of his team mates got starts but failed to capitalise. England's bowling attack was for the most part tight and controlled, but lacked a killing edge that could have put the Aussie innings to the sword.

End of day 2 England ahead but they will need to make every post a winner from here and finish off the Aussie innings in pretty quick time. Standing in their way is Watson, who could make a name for himself. With the new ball 1o overs away it could be a torrid time for the lower order tomorrow morning.

Fascinating game thus far, fingers crossed the weather doesn't intervene.

As a non-sports person, unless you count following Battlebots, I'm thinking...
