Chapter One

“…You’ve been missing for two years.” Vaughn choked out, doing everything he could to keep his composure. The look on Sydney’s face was enough to break his heart. It would have, in fact, if it hadn’t been broken already. He wanted to throw his arms around her and ask, no demand, if she had had any idea what he had gone through the past two years. He managed to keep his impulses in check and waited instead, for her to absorb what he had said.
Her look of surprise turned into incredulity, she put her hand to her head, looking at the floor with a frown on her face, mouth slightly open. Her eyes darted back to Vaughn’s face.
“Wh-what? How is that possible? I-I-remember the fight with Francie and then I shot her. Everything after that is blank. I couldn’t possibly have been gone for two years.” She looked at Vaughn searching his eyes, pleading for him to tell her it was all a dream. But Vaughn just stared down at his hands, avoiding her gaze.
Sydney took deep breaths, closing her eyes as tears streamed down her face. She opened them to see Vaughn looking at her, with a pained expression on his face.
“Just yesterday,” she whispered, trying to keep her composure, “we were talking about going to Santa Barbara.” A sob escaped her throat. “We didn’t go, did we?”
Vaughn sadly shook his head, as memory of their last time together came flooding back. When he had told her about booking the hotel, she had been so happy. Happy, not only to be with him, but because of what the trip meant. It meant that she was able to have some sort of normalcy in her life, and that she was that much closer to having it their permanently.
When Vaughn had gotten the call from Kendall, he had assured him that he could handle it, I mean, he was over her, wasn’t he? It was a question that had plagued him since the day he had proposed. He realized now, that he was kidding himself. The moment he walked through the door and saw her face, when he had held her in his arms for the first time in two years, all of his pent up feeling came flooding back. The dam he thought he had built so strong, the bricks he had laid down each day, one after the other had been broken through so easily.
Sydney glanced down at his hand, the glint of the golden ring piercing her heart worse than a thousand knives.
“So I guess I don’t have to ask what you’ve done with yourself these past two years,” she said bitterly.
Vaughn glanced down at his wedding ring, cursing it for causing so much pain. A month ago, it had bee such a relief to finally slip it on his finger. It had been his escape, he realized now, his escape from her memory, his feelings for her. Now it was what kept him from running back to her.
“Syd-“ he began.
“No, Vaughn, it’s been two years, you don’t need to say anything.” She looked up at him, her bottom lip trembling. “You had every right to move on, it’s okay, I understand.”
Vaughn didn’t know whether to be relieved or upset. He told himself h e should be relieved that she was taking it so well, but in truth, he wished she would be angry with him for giving up on her so easily. He deserved her anger, not her acceptance.
“Vaughn- where have I been? And what do you mean they asked you to come back? Come back from what?”
Vaughn frowned, looking down at the ground before fixing his eyes on her face. He tried to swallow the lump in his throat before beginning.
“Syd, when I found out that you were dead, I was lost. I don’t remember anything after I got the news from Kendall. I was wandering around in haze for weeks and I honestly don’t know how I got up for work every morning. Parts of me had been saying that you were dead and that I should move on and forget about you. The other part told me not to lose hope, that there was still a possibility you were still alive. I believed the second part for a long time because it was what I wanted to believe. But then there was the ceremony.” Vaughn paused, wiping the tears from his eyes. “The head at Langley walked up to the podium and gave a short speech about you. I don’t remember anything about it, only that that the whole time I was thinking, ‘what are you doing up there? You didn’t even know her! You couldn’t possibly do Sydney Bristow justice with a speech. She was so much more than that.’” Vaughn paused again, trying to read Sydney’s reaction. She was silently crying, her knees pulled up to her chin, eyes closed, rocking herself back and forth.
“Then,” Vaughn continued, “a man walked up to the front holding something in his hand. Everyone bowed their heads as the man placed a single star on a wall with hundreds of others, all representing different people, but all symbolizing the same thing. I felt like I had been hit with a ton of bricks. One voice was screaming ‘I told you so!’ and the other, weaker voice was saying, ‘what the hell are you doing? She’s not dead!’
After that, I couldn’t go back to work. Everything in the office, the people, all reminded me of you. I was driving myself crazy, hearing your voice, seeing your face, feeling your touch. Syd- I couldn’t take it, your memory was haunting me, I had to get away from you. So I left the CIA, moved to an apartment and started over.”
Vaughn turned his moist eyes toward Sydney. He kneeled down in from of her, taking her face in his hands, wiping the tears away. “Syd, I am so sorry, I failed you. I should have had more faith in you. I should never stopped looking for you, you deserve someone better than me.”

Chapter 2 Part 1
Sydney immediately pulled away from him, trying to avoid his piercing gaze, but she could see the pain and hurt in his eyes.
“Vaughn, where have I been?” she whispered sharply.
Vaughn turned his sad green eyes toward her, swallowing hard. “We don’t know.”
“Where’s my father?” Sydney asked, quickly glancing around the room almost hoping to find him there, waiting for her.
Vaughn closed his eyes. He had been waiting for the question, mentally preparing himself for his inevitable answer.
“Syd, I told you when we thought you were dead, I was lost. If you thought I had it bad, no one had it worse than your father. He began drinking again, coming to work hung over almost everyday. He refused to take any time off, said it wouldn’t have helped him. Then, one day, he didn’t show up to work, so I drove over to his house, you know, to check up on him see if he was all right. But I didn’t find him there; I went to a couple bars in the area, searched for about two hours for him.” He stopped, looking at her meaningfully, “Syd, I couldn’t find him anywhere, and that was a little over a year ago.”
Sydney put her hands to her mouth in an effort to stop the sob that was trying to escape. “Where is he? Do you know?” she managed to choke out.
Vaughn looked at the ground, “We think he is working with Sloane.”
“N-n-no,” she gasped, “that’s not possible. My father would never work for Sloane. He hated him almost as much as I did.”
“Syd, I know this is hard for you to take in and—“
“How do you know how hard it is for me?!” she snapped, immediately regretting her harsh tone.
“Syd—please try and understand. When you were gone, he had nothing left to live for. You were his life Sydney. I can understand that because it was the one thing we had in common.” Vaughn bowed his head, slightly embarrassed at his confession. Her eyes bore into his head, he could feel her gaze penetrating every part of his body. He raised his eyes to meet hers, holding her gaze.
“I realize this isn’t much of a welcoming home party, but there is something that I haven’t said yet, something that needs to be said. Syd—you were never far from my thoughts—never. You were the first person I thought of in the morning, and the last person I thought of every night.” Vaughn took a tentative step forward, and when she didn’t back away, he continued. “I missed you so much, it was like a dull pain in my chest. And despite everything that has happened in my life, and what ever has happened in yours, I am so happy your back.”
Sydney finally gave in, leaning toward him, she allowed him to envelope her in his arms. She cried on his shoulder, the shoulder that had always given everything, and asked for nothing. When her world came crashing down, it was always there, comforting and soothing her, soaking up all her problems and miseries.
“I can’t believe this,” She sobbed, pulling away from him.
“Syd, I know this is a lot to take in, maybe you should get some rest.” He motioned his head toward the bathroom, “go get yourself cleaned up and I’ll get the bed set up for you.”
She gave him a weak smile as she made her way to the bathroom. She splashed some water on her face, trying to clear out her eyes. She glanced at the mirror and saw a woman she hardly recognized staring back at her. A face that had been through so much pain and suffering, a face that had seen and caused even more. She banged her fist against the mirror, shattering the image she suddenly despised. She felt a warm flow on her hand and looked down to realize she had sliced open her palm. She welcomed the pain; it was better than the injuries she had suffered internally. Her palm would heal, but her soul would not.
“Syd? Syd are you okay?” Vaughn asked, immediately at the door.
Sydney laughed bitterly. It was a laugh devoid of humor, a laugh devoid of feeling and soul. It sent chills down his spine; he had never heard her laugh like that before.
“Do you really want me to answer that?” she responded softly, coming out of the bathroom. She noticed for the first time how much Vaughn had aged since the last time she had seen him. His forehead wrinkles had become even more prominent (if that’s possible) since two years ago. She quickly looked away, ashamed that she was probably the cause of them.
Vaughn glanced at her hand, noticing the blood. “Syd,” he said, taking her hand. He led her to the sink and ran her palm under the cold faucet, wrapping it in a towel.
“You should try and get some sleep, we’re flying back to LA tomorrow, it’s going to be a long flight.”
Sydney just nodded her head, allowing Vaughn to lead her to the bed. Realizing that she was unable to do anything her self, he gently laid her down, pulling the covers up to her chin.
“Night Syd,” he whispered, kissing her forehead. Then, as he was getting himself settled on the floor, he heard Sydney stirring above him. He opened his eyes to see her leaning over the bed, staring at him.
“Vaughn?” she whispered.
“Hmm…”
She opened her mouth to say something, but then quickly shut it, changing her mind.
“Syd—what?”
“I was going to ask you—never mind, it doesn’t matter.”
“Syd, it does matter, what were you going to say?” He said forcefully. He wasn’t quite sure why it was so important to him.
“Could you come up here with me? I-I would just feel better, and I don’t want to make you sleep on the ground.”
Vaughn hesitated for an instant, but then smiled, picking up his pillow and plopping himself next to her.
She smiled at him weakly—“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”

Chapter 2 Part 2

They both lay on their backs, hands behind their heads, staring at the ceiling, feeling as though the two inches that separated them was as much as 20 ft.
Sydney finally broke the long silence, “Were you happy?” She whispered it, as though she wanted to know the answer, but at the same time, was afraid of it.
Vaughn was taken back. He hadn’t expected her to ask him that and she had taken him by surprise. He opened his mouth to answer her, but then abruptly closed it, frowning. Had he been happy? If someone had asked him that a week ago, he would have said yes. But he hadn’t been happy. But if he hadn’t been happy, then what had he been? Unhappy? Maybe, but being unhappy usually means you want something more, he hadn’t wanted something more, he had wanted something he had lost. Because, he realized suddenly, when Sydney had gone missing, part of him had gone with her. He had lost something, and now he had found it again. Vaughn was both pleased and scared at his revelation. He didn’t want to feel this way, it wasn’t fair to him or Sydney, or…no, this was not something he wanted to feel.
“Vaughn?” Sydney whispered, barely audible.
Vaughn decided to go with the simple answer, not wanting to delve into his personal feelings at this point. “I am now.”
Sydney turned her head to look at Vaughn. Vaughn had to muster up all his self-control to keep himself from facing her. If he faced her, looking into her warm, brown eyes, he couldn’t be held responsible for his actions.
“That’s not what I asked you.”
Vaughn sighed, realizing he shouldn’t avoid the inevitable. “I thought I had been, happy, I mean, but in truth, it was a mask. It was easy to hide behind it though, you can understand that, given what we’ve done.” Vaughn paused, trying to collect his thoughts. “I was miserable for about 6 months, but then, after the ceremony, I was just…empty. There was a part of me missing and I gave up looking for it a long time ago.”
He stopped, turning his head to face her. She nodded, satisfied with his answer for the moment, and turned over on her side, with her back to him. He stared at the back of her head for a long time before turning over himself and falling into an uneasy sleep.
It had been in the back of his head all night, a little annoying voice that he had tried to ignore, but deep down, he knew he couldn’t. A voice that was telling him that after two years, there was no way he was going to last an entire night, in the same bed as Sydney without keeping his hands off her. And that little voice had been right, because sometime during the night, he had rolled over and gently pulled her toward him, resting his chin on top of her head. She had come to his side willingly, relaxing against his chest.
Incidentally, they both slept much deeper than they had in a long time.
