Chapter Seven

Life is just one damned thing after another.
-- Elbert Hubbard

Sydney heard the footsteps pounding after her and felt a queer sense of déjà vu. She sprinted toward a nearby door, kicking it open as she ran down the hallway. As she was running, she heard a voice in her head.
“Sydney, where are you?”
She automatically answered, although, she didn’t know why. “I’m running down a long hallway. There are men chasing after me. My cover’s been blown.”
Sydney came to a fork in the hallway. She stopped trying to catch her breath and decide which path to take. A wrong decision could get her killed. She heard the footsteps behind, gaining, and each click of a foot pounding in her head. She forced the rising panic down and sprinted down the left fork.
She heard the footsteps slowing down behind her and felt her panic rising again. Why the hell were they stopping? She thought.
“Who is stopping Sydney?” the voice in her head said suddenly. She didn’t even realize she had said it aloud.
“The security section Romanov sent after me.”
“Who is—“ the voice started to say, but then stopped as Sydney whispered, “Oh my God.”
“What is happening Sydney?” the voice said soothingly.
“I-I-I’m trapped, there is a gate closing me in,” she whispered, her voice wracked with fear.
Vaughn helplessly looked on as he balled his hands into a fist, clenching his jaw. All the suffering, all the fear and pain she had experienced over the past two years could be seen on her face, and he was the cause of it. If he hadn’t been so selfish, if he had put her before his own pain and looked harder, longer for her, she wouldn’t have to be here, reliving the suffering, the fear and the pain.
Sydney heard the footsteps again. She knew how they dealt with traitors, she had seen it, and she had done it herself.
She madly looked around the cell she suddenly found herself in. She noticed a small window on the opposite wall. Running over to it, she hit her fist against it in frustration—it was barred. But her hope of escape returned as she remembered the small ballpoint pen in her pocket, which could cut through any kind of steel. She took it out and quickly cut through the steel bars. They hit the floor with a loud metallic clank. But Sydney could barely hear it over the rhythmic shoes clicking against the marble floor.
She pulled herself through the window, taking a sharp breath as she glanced at the street below her. The tiny white lights reminding her that she was on the 102 floor of the building. The wind whipped at her face and her hair, her heart was pounding a mile a minute as she sat on the window with her feet hanging in the cell, her back to the 200ft drop. She took a deep breath and pulled herself to a stand. She heard the men yelling inside, trying to get the gate open. She heard the shower of bullets down by her feet. She counted to three and hoisted herself above the window, gripping the bricks on the side of the skyscraper. She got her footing and slowly crawled up the side of building, pulling herself onto the roof.
She collapsed onto her back, gasping for air. She pulled her belt off, yelling into it, “Boy Scout requesting immediate extraction!” There was static on the other end, and then a voice, barely audible, “Boy Scout, stand by for extraction in 5.”
Sydney leaned over the side of the building, but sprang back as the silence was pierced by a machine gun, and bullets whizzed past her head. They had gotten the gate open and now they knew she was on the roof. It won’t be long until they get up here, she thought, her eyes scanning the sky, her ears straining to hear the quiet hum of an approaching helicopter.
Just as she was looking for something on the roof to aid her in a surely fatal escape off the roof, she heard the buzz of a helicopter. Relief seeped through her veins as she jumped on, just as the guards ascended the roof. They shot at the helicopter as it took off, but the guards realized it was useless, she was gone.
Vaughn finally couldn’t take it anymore; he couldn’t stand to see her in such agony.
He leaned toward the woman asking the questions and whispered into her ear, “I think this is enough for today.” He tried to hide the pain in his voice, but when Will shot him a concerned look, he knew he hadn’t done a very good job.
“Sydney, I am going to count back from five, and then you may open your eyes. Five, four, three, two, one.”
Sydney’s eyes slowly opened and Will rushed in as she started to cry. Vaughn watched as she leaned her head against Will’s shoulder and felt a pang of jealously as he rubbed her back, comforting her.
He stood in the doorway watching. What would have been a heartwarming scene for anyone else was only a painful reminder of his mistakes. Will glanced up at him and gave him half a shrug, sending him a look that clearly said, “hey, you had your chance man, and you blew it.”

How many times must we go through this
You’ve always been mine, woman I thought you knew this
How many times must we go through this
You’ll always be mine, cupid only misses sometimes

But we could end up brokenhearted
If we don’t remember why all this started
And if they try to tell you love fades with time
Tell them there’s no such thing as time
It’s our time…
