Chapter Five (is that right?)
***********************
The Next Day
*Sydney rolled her eyes ,exasperated. Her phone conversation with Will wasn't going as well as she thought it would've.
"Will,.... no sweetie.... He's just a friend."
There was a pause, while Sydney listened to him complain.
"But Will... you're out of town. It's not like I am breaking a date with you."
Pause.
"No! I'm just showing him around L.A. He just moved here. Will, C’mon."she said, sighing heavily.
Pause. A very angry look came across her face.
"No Will! I am NOT cheating on you!" she almost screamed.
There was a pause. "I can't believe you would even say that!" she said, now screaming.
There was another long pause.
"Fine. I have to go." she said, anger seeping through her voice.
Another pause.
"Fine. BYE!" she screamed, hanging up the phone a little bit too hard on the receiver.
She let out a long, hard breath laying back on her bed. She was so mad at Will.
It wasn't just that fight either. It seemed that since she had started working for the CIA, all they had ever done was fight.
Deciding to take a shower before Michael got there, she got up and walked into the bathroom.
Turning the water on almost as hot as it would go, she stepped into the shower. Letting the soothing water wash over her, she tried to calm herself down.
She was so confused. She loved Will! She loved Will! She kept telling herself that! So why didn't she believe it!
*********************
An hour later, she was just taking a sip of her coffee, when the door bell rang. She jumped up, barely avoiding the coffee table as she bounded to the front door.
Reaching for the knob, she took in a quick breath, calming herself from the forty yard dash she had just made to get to the door. With one final breath, she opened it.
"Hey." she said smiling.
"Hi." he smiled back.
"Come in. I just have to go get my purse." she said smiling.
He nodded, walking in and shutting the door behind him.
"So, how's the search for an apartment going?" she yelled. as she walked toward her bedroom to grab her purse. She giggled inwardly at how she had purposely left it in there so they would have time to talk before they left.
"Great. I've found a couple of really nice ones. The only problem is only one of them allows animals." he said, chuckling.
"Oh, well.... if you want... my friend Francie. Her mother used to be a realtor. I'm sure she would be more than happy to help you out." she said smiling, as she made her way back out of her room and came to stand by him by the kitchen counter.
"That would be great! Did she help you find this house?" he asked.
"Actually, she did." she said, smiling. "Francie and I used to live here together, but she moved out after she and Eric got married. Now it's just me and Whiskers." she said smiling at her cat, laying on the couch.
"Oh." he laughed. "Well she did a good job of picking you out a house. It's really nice." he said smiling.
"Really?"
"Yeah, I love it." he said, looking over at her and grinning.
"Thanks. I mean with work and everything I was never home much. It's always a mess." she giggled.
"I'm surprised you could keep a cat with all the traveling you do." he said, following her lead and sitting down on a chair across from her in the den.
"Well, my friends usually take care of her for me when I'm away. Whiskers loves Francie." she smiled.
"That's good." he nodded.
"Yeah, well, see, Whiskers doesn't like very many people. She's kind of a particular kitty. She likes Francie and me. That's about it." she giggled, remembering the time Eric had tried to pick her up and the cat had peed on him, which of course insured that Eric wouldn't bother her in the future.
"She peed on Francie's husband one time." she laughed.
"I think I'll leave the cat alone then." he laughed.
"Well, ready to go?" she asked, standing up.
"Yep. Ready." he said standing up and following her to the door.
"Well then, let's get going." she said, grinning.
As she fumbled in her purse for the keys to lock the door, she asked, "Your car or mine?"
"Want to take mine? It's already out and everything?"
"That's fine." she smiled.
"K. So, where are we going?"
She looked up at the ceiling, thinking. Giggling she replied. "Well, it's about one so it's good shopping right now."
"You're boss." he nodded.
Finally finding the keys, she pulled them out, locking the door and following him down the steps to his car. He walked to the other side with her, opening the door, and picking up the piles of papers and folders all over the seat, and throwing them in the back."Sorry. My car is kind of a mess." he laughed, finally emerging from the car, and holding the door open for her.
"No problem." she smiled, nodding.
"So, what are we shopping for?"
"Useless junk sound good?" she giggled.
"You know, I was just saying I could use some more useless junk. It's so hard to come by these days." he laughed.
"Yes, I know what you mean. There is a pier about ten miles from here. It's gorgeous and good for a day of shopping." she smiled.
"Alright." he nodded. "Let's go."
*******************

Finally making it to the pier, after slight car troubles when the windshield wipers started spazzing out, they parked and hopped out into the salty beach air.
"Shut up! I can't help it." he laughed, as they left the crazy car, which despite being off, it's windshield wipers were still going berserk.
"I know. It's just funny. Sorry." she giggled, covering her mouth with her hand.
"Yeah." he said, hiding his own smile.
Walking down the pier a little way, Sydney broke the comfortable silence.
"So, have you ever been here, L.A., before now?"
"Yeah. Actually, I came here when I was like 10 to go to Disney Land." he laughed.
"You know something. I lived here almost my whole life, and I've never been there!" she smiled.
"Really! Not even when you were a kid!?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Sydney looked down at her hands. She hated thinking about her childhood. It hadn't exactly been a plus point in her life. Her mother had turned out to work for the KGB, betraying them both, and her Dad had turned into a total work-acholic, as a result. She hardly ever saw him as a kid.
Quickly covering though, she looked back up saying, "Nope, Never thought about it that much." she giggled at him. He had on the most ridiculous looking hat and sunglasses on that she had ever seen.
Laughing, she reached over and took the sunglasses off his face. "That's better. They look better on me." she grinned.
"Fine. Be that way." he said, frowning, and pouting.
She giggled. Grabbing his hand, she pulled him away as the man who owned the booth turned around to try and sell it to them. Quickly taking off the hat, he threw it back over his shoulder, running along behind her.
"What was that about?" he laughed, as they continued walking along the pier.
"The guy was going to try and sell it to us."
"So?" he asked, shrugging his shoulders.
"We would've been stuck there a while, putting it simply." she laughed.
"I see." he replied.
************************
The day flew by, Sydney... I mean Claire and Michael having lots of fun. As the sun set, both started ignoring the rumbling in their stomachs.
Finally, the grumbling wasn't so quiet. Hearing her stomach give a particularly loud growl, he asked, "Hungry?" Laughing at her pained expression as she nodded a yes.
"Well, let's see. There has to be some where to eat around here."
Sydney, spotting her favorite pita stand, pointed over at it.
"Pitas okay?" she asked.
"Sounds good to me."They both ordered, and as he pulled out his wallet to pay, she shook her head saying, "Don't worry about it. It's my treat." she said, smiling.
"No Claire, it's alright." he said.
"Pssssh!" she said, brushing off his comment, and giggling at his face as she payed for their two pitas.
"Alright. Thanks." he said smiling as she handed him his pita.
"Don't mention it. Want to go for a walk on the beach?" she asked, smiling.
He nodded, taking a bite of it. "Wow! This is really good! Especially for a pita stand pita." he laughed.
"I know. I used to have one everyday for lunch. I would jog down here and have lunch and go swimming or shopping or something." she said, taking a bite herself.
As she was eating, and walking along the beach, her mind wandered back to Will. She was still really mad at him, and the argument had left her in a somewhat perturbed mood.
"What's up?" he asked, looking over at her distant face.
Pulled back to Earth, she ( a little too quickly) replied, "Nothing. Fine."
He immediatly knew she was lying. "Yeah. Right. Seriously. What's the matter? You've been quiet for like three minutes. Record of the day."
She giggled at his statement before saying, "It's nothing. I just got in a really big fight with my boyfriend today."
His eyebrows flew up. He hadn't known she had a boyfriend. *God! She has a boyfriend. Duh Vaughn. Course she has a boyfriend. She's freakin gorgeous. and smart. and funny. and... stop! She's not available.*
"I'm sorry." he said, looking down at the sand.
"Don't be." she said. "That's all we ever do nowadays."
Now she felt bad again. She loved Will! She loved Will. Only the more she said it to herself, the less she believed it.
"That's kind of how it was with me and my last girl friend. We were always fighting. She was mad because she said all I ever did was work." he said, laughing inwardly at how right she was.
"Yeah. It's the same thing with Will and I. But it's as much of his fault as mine. We're both so absorbed in our jobs we hardly ever see each other and when we do all we do is fight." she said, laughing some what bitterly.
"Well, I'm sure you two will work it out." he said, taking the last bite of his pita.
"Yeah. I don't know."
"You don't think so?" he asked, looking over at her.
She sat down on the sand. Noticing he decided to once again follow her move and sit too.
"I don't know. You don't mind talking about this with me, do you?" she asked, not wanting to make him uncomfortable.
"No. It's fine." he said, truthfully.
"Okay. Well, I love him. At least.... well, that is what I keep trying to tell myself. But.... I just don't know. I mean, how can you love someone you never see and whom all you ever do is fight with. We've been dating forever. It just seems like routine now. Like it isn't love anymore. Just..... part of our lives."
Michael nodded.
"And I don't want that!" she said, looking down at her hands.
He smiled encouragingly. "No one would want that."
She looked up at him. "Thank you." It was probably the most sincere thing she had said all day.
"No problem."
"No really. I haven't talked to anyone about that. Not even Francie. This really helped. Thank you."
He reached over, brushing his thumb across her hand, smiling at her.
"It's nice to have someone to talk to." he said, looking her right in the eyes.
"Yeah. It is."
They sat there for a minute, in complete silence.
Noticing it was getting dark, he squeezed her hand, before letting it go.
"It's getting dark."
She nodded, this time following his lead and standing up.
They walked back down the beach, toward the pier. Both were happy. Today, they both felt, they had made the starts of a beautiful new friendship.
