Hey! Someone mentioned starting a feminist thread, so I thought I'd go ahead and do it. :smiley: I put it in here 'cause I didn't know if it'd be appropriate under member lounge. But anyways... so yay feminism! And yes, guys can be feminists too.

feminist majority foundation (the national organization that the fmla is affiliated with)

feminist.com (fun site with tons of resources and a great advice column)

women's sports foundation (great info about title IX)

medical students for choice (a great resource for medical students who want to learn the technique since it isn't regularly included in the curriculum)

third wave foundation (for third wave feminists, like ourselves. :smiley:)


well, just for some clarification about the last link - third wave feminists are today's feminists. the first wave was in the mid 1800's with susan b. anthony and elizabeth cady stanton. the second wave occurred in the decade people usually associate feminism with - the 70s. and third wave is today. :smiley:

oh yes, and a wonderful book that i HIGHLY recommend is manifesta: young women, feminism, and the future by jennifer baumgardner and amy richards. they came to our campus to speak about their book and it was just so cool. :D

i LOVE this book. it's my absolute favorite non-fiction book. if you want great feminist ideals and TONS of laughs, go straight to your nearest bookstore and pick this up!! ^_^

Oooo! I'm gonna have to read it! 'Cause yeah, I'm a smartmouth... at least my parents always tell me that! :D My reply? "Is that such a bad thing?"

I really liked the Second Sex, by Simone de Beauvoir... just 'cause it's Beauvoir... I'm fascinated by her and Sartre's strange relationship. I haven't read all of it, but what I did read (about half of it, in excerpts) was great!

:lol: this book is for all smartmouths. and if you're not one, it will turn you into one. ;)
 
i must go pick this book up...anything about world domination is good! haha! one step closer, one step closer!
 
I'm here...im going to the library today to see if they have a few of those books...they sound great! You go feminists!! lol

Grrr... I hate when guys say that... a lot of them say it just to sound cool, but really, they sound like jerks and deserve the pain!

It makes me mad when people get after me when I say that I don't want to have kids. They're all like "you'll change your mind" and "all women need to have kids" etc etc. It's so sexist to say things like that... having children is a stereotypical gender role for females.
 
you know, i love children. and i can't wait to have them someday. but just because i want children doesn't mean everyone else does either. i'm all for women who don't want to have children. and it's such a huge double standard because if you're a MAN who doesn't want children, then society says, "well, it's okay." but if you're a WOMAN who doesn't want children, all of a sudden, you're a "freak" and "unnatural." well, screw that. i think it's far more selfish to bring a child into this world without being able to give yourself completely to it.

A lot of guys say those things or say male chauvinist jokes. Don't worry, they get their comeuppance when they sit at home alone on a Saturday night because no girl will go out with them.
 
LOL That's what I say to the guys in my grade. I'm always telling them how they're never gonna get ANY girls if they keep talking like that.

and you can actually by a t-shirt with that quote at the feminist majority foundation. :D
