The Micronauts, by Gordon M Williams, 1977

Was too difficult for me to understand then really. I was only 11 I think. Surprisingly I had read First Blood (Rambo) before then, so wasn't like I wasn't reading adult literature. The concepts and acquired knowledge expected of the reader were just too great for me then.

ERB - A Princess of Mars
Then the rest of the John Carter Series

Got interested in ERB because my dad had all the Tarzan series in hardcover(burned up in our house fire, Glad I got to read them first tho)

My first SciFi books were probably a plethora of Star Wars & Star Trek serial novels. However, if you are looking for the book that really made me fall for this genre it would be Frank Herbert's Dune...not to be mistaken for the horrible David Lynch film. What do you think?

the first book that i read that really made me love the genre was the chariots of the gods. anyone that knows that book can see that to me it starts out with questions that got me interested in more scifi.

also, i know everyone has differing taste in movies yet i thought even though the original movie of dune was cheesy in many ways it was still good. i do agree that a better version could be made but still i do enjoy watching the original over and over again.

It's funny that you mention Chariots of the Gods because I was just at Chitzen Itza with my wife on vacation & I found myself telling people about the correlations drawn in the book and what we were actually seeing in person. Pretty cool & Topical.

Regarding Dune: I found the Sci-Fi channel mini series remake to be better than the David Lynch movie. Of course the book is better than both...

Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell; it was part of a collection of sci-fi short stories/novellas that I read in junior high back in the late 80's.

I can't remember in which sequence they came, but either Tolkien's LOTR books or the Narnia series by Lewis. I remember starting off with the Hardy Boys type books and very quickly branching out into the aforementioned books as well as the Hitchhiker's books.

What I do recall vividly though are my teachers in 5th grade having a fit that I was reading LOTR and got my Mom involved saying that her permission was required for me to read those types of novels. Her response was basically that I love to read and that I was allowed to read anything I wanted. Thanks, Mom! :D

I never counted CS Lewis. Most books I read as a child had a fantastical element.
Many children's books still do.

And that's a good thing! Even with the smallest of children of I'd rather them read/be read something that uses their imagination, like Where The Wild Things Are, then the typical 'The sky is blue, the earth is green, roses are red...' type stuff.

When I was a child, in my country weren't too much English sci-fi books or films. I saw, the New Hope, and I searched similar stuffs in library. I found Asimov: Foundation, I, robot, and Herbert's: Dune. Plus Hungarian sci-fi writer's books. Like: Nemere István: The Secret of the DomeCity or Lörincz L. László: The Vocifeorus Bull. Later I read ERB (Princes of Mars) Bradbury (Martian Chronicles) and Dick (Androids) too. Nowadays I can collect SW, ST and B5 books, comics too. I prefer saceopera, but my favorite sf book is: Kurt Wonnegut :The Sirens of Titan.
(Sorry for my English.)

Princess of Mars if that was published in the late 50s or thereabouts. But started with 20.000 leagues then the Tarzan novels. I find a lot of now SF is too soap (long current day dialogue) for my liking and usually give up.

The first books I can remember reading are all fantasy or adventure ones - though I liked anything science fictional from a very young age. I can't place the first novel - even young adult. I think I read 1984 around 14 or 15. I know I read Hitchhikers Guide maybe a bit younger, and 2001. Before that, it's all the fantasy I remember.

I can remember the first science fiction short story I must have read - "A Pail of Air" by Fritz Leiber. It was in a book in the school library - I'll have been between 11 and 14.
