Chapter One

Seven year old Sydney Bristow kicked at the pebbles under her feet, biting her bottom lip nervously. In her years of living she’d never had to experience loss, of any kind, and this was the first time she actually understood what it felt like. It wasn’t the same kind of pain that Michael would have felt the day his father went to join the angels, but it was close.

Michael Vaughn quickly jumped over the fence, like he had so many times before, and joined Sydney at her side. Neither of them said anything, they just stood there. Letting the silence melt into them, listening to everything else in the background and letting it slowly slip away.

It seemed like an eternity that they stood there; not saying a word, in reality it couldn’t have been more than a few minutes. To a child’s delicate mind the shortest of time could seem never-ending, this was a classic interval.

“Syd?” Michael finally asked, turning his face to look at her, wanting to meet the chocolate brown eyes that were always filled with laughter. Sydney didn’t avert her gaze from the ground. She kept her eyes glued onto the scuffs forming on her new dress shoes from the little stones. “Talk,” he requested, now turning fully around to look at her.

“I don’t want to go.” Her two front teeth sunk farther into her bottom lip, begging the tears not to come.

“I don’t want you to either.” Michael swallowed hard, he was a boy, and no matter how little, boys didn’t cry. Without saying a word, he laced Sydney’s fingers into his own, and clutched her little hand with all the power he possessed.

She looked up at him now, salt water outlining the eyes he knew by heart, and the tears slowly slid down her cheeks. Her hand gripped his tighter, as their parents voices became known from the front of the house.

“My room’s gone,” Sydney said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. “The men camed yesterday and tooked it all.”

“My room’s still here. You can stay in it with me.” He offered, smiling slightly at the thought of his best friend staying under the same roof.

“Daddy won’t let me, remember?” Sydney let out a heavy sigh, and they both fell silent again. Her fathers footsteps could be heard on the front walk and both of them knew the last of the boxes were being loaded up.

“We could run away…,” Michael said shyly, his voice trailing off.

“Mikey…” Sydney took a deep breath, exhaling loudly she began to speak, but stopped with her fathers familiar tone drifting into the back yard.

The second he rounded the fence Michael dropped Sydney’s hand from his grasp and took a step away from her. Like a little kid in the cookie jar.

“You ready Sweetheart?” Jack asked sweetly, kneeling down to his daughter eye level. “The car’s all loaded up.”

“I… Can I say bye to Michael first?” She pleaded, her bloodshot innocent eyes staring up into the larger, more knowledgeable blue ones of her father.

“Don’t be too long.” He patted her head gently and walked through the patio door, taking one last look around the now empty house.

For the first time all morning Sydney turned to look at her friend. She stared right into his green eyes, like leaves on the trees in springtime, she’d always thought.

“Promise we’ll always be first?” She asked him angelically, the innocence of a child clearly shown.

“First what?” He asked, typical boy.

“First friends,” She explained simply, holding out her smallest finger. “Pinky promise?”

“Best friends.” Michael nodded his head, and linked her finger around his own. “Pinky promise,” he agreed, dropping both hands to his side.

It didn’t take long for her to let go of all self control she had and wrap her arms around Michael’s neck forcefully. Sydney dug her head into his little chest, and let tears run freely down her already glistening cheeks.

“I love you.” Michael whispered softly, just so that she could hear.

She pulled back from him, her innocent features graced with a radiant smile. Sydney kissed his cheek gently, giving his hand a squeeze as she did so.

“I love you too, Mikey.” Sydney giggled, knowing he hated the name. It eased the tension pulling at both of their fragile hearts. “Buh-bye.”

“Don’t say that.” He pointed a finger at her nose, and they both laughed. “Never,” he informed her in an attempt to be strict.

“I’ll miss you.” He admitted honestly. “You’re the only girl that likes hockey! ‘Cause Eric stinks; I’ll have no one to play with.”

“You’ll find someone.” Sydney tried to smile. “I’m going to miss you too. I… I don’t know if I’m ever coming back.” She sobbed, using the back of her hand to try and catch a few of the flooding tears.

“Syddie, I’ll stay right here and wait for you.” He shifted his weight uncomfortably on his feet, staring at the ground and then back into her eyes.

“Forever?” She asked him with disbelief.

“Forever and for always,” He promised just as the car horn beeped from the driveway. A sad smile spread across her lips, but his promise somehow made it easier to except. To seven year old Sydney Bristow, Michael Vaughn would always be there waiting for her.

Ten Years Later

“So, when we get to the house I want you to start unpacking your room. That way, hopefully, by the time school starts next week everything will be all set.” Jack smiled briefly when he was through with his instructions.

“I have something I want to do first,” Sydney explained, staring out the window from the back seat.

“How long will you be?” Irina questioned, watching her daughter from the rear view mirror.

“I don’t know.” Sydney sighed, playing with the hem of her shirt. “It all depends.”

“On?” Irina urged her to continue, this is what you get when you’re mothers a psychologist. Sydney thought annoyed.

“Him,” she replied almost inaudibly.

“Sydney…” Jack warned, “You can’t just expect everything to be the same. You haven’t even talked to that boy in over ten years. For all you know, he could have moved back to France with his mother.”

Giving her head a slight shake, she stared at the gray sky. “He said he’d wait.” She whispered quietly and over the radio her voice was completely drowned out.
