Garber in Fiddler

Today, the "Chicago" producers are working on an ABC remake of "Fiddler on the Roof," starring "Alias" and Broadway star Victor Garber as Tevye.

"For me to do Tevye on film would be so challenging; by doing it on film, we can expand the qualities," Garber said after a conference at the Renaissance Hotel. "I love working with these guys (Zadan and Meron)."

Garber starred in their versions of "Cinderella," "Annie" and "The Music Man."

Filming on "Fiddler on the Roof" was scheduled to start this spring in Prague, Czechoslovakia, but shooting has been delayed because of security concerns related to the war in Iraq, according to ABC. The network is maintaining its options on the TV rights.

You are entitled to your opinion, which I don't expect to change. Mr Bikel has the edge linguistically, certainly, but I for one am interested to see Mr Garber tackle this role. To look at Mayor Shinn in The Music Man as a basis for stating emphatically that an actor can't do Tevye! It's not even a singing role! (Meanwhile, I saw nothing to complain about in his rendering of the perenially exaperated mayor; it was Mr Broderick rather who seemed to have some trouble fully completing his assigned task--though I found him to have a sweeter quality than Mr Preston, whom I admire.) After listening to Mr Garber sing John Wilkes Booth in Assassins, I am frankly amazed at what he can do simply singing. I am heartily disappointed by the postponement and hope that Mr Garber's participation in the project won't be compromised by the wait.

oooo well i just cant see him as tevya, if this is a disney version there is no way i will see it after seeing how bad music man was

I liked Fiddle on the Roof movie from the 70s; I saw it when I was about 15. Can Victor Garber do Russian Dancing there is a scene after one of his daughters wedding of really great Russian Dancing. Yet it is hard to see him on the Roof saying "after all we are all just Fiddlers on the Roof" or "If I were a Rich Man..." But I'd watch him in it I think he give an interesting version of the Father... very different than Jack Bristow or the Mayor in Music Man... the Mayor was a bit comical in the original movie with Robert Preston anyway I actually think Victor Garber gave a stronger performance than the original actor from the 60s for the Mayor! I mean the best line for the Mayor character is how he kept calling his daughter's boyfriend "you wild kid"... very small townish and that is why Professor Hill was so exciting to them and forgiveable! (y)

Enjoy your Sunday!

I don't think the Mayor of River City is really a major part of the music man as the parts of Professor Hill and, Marian, the Librarian ... it is an important anchor character but not really an opportunistic role to perform various talents of an actor except I thought it showed that Victor Garber could do Ballroom dancing and theatrical voice projections the Mayor is meant to look somewhat foolish in the character role ... and he did demonstrate this in the Disney movie.

Now "Fiddler on the Roof" is entirely different and we will see how talented Victor Garber is in it because it has a wide range of demands on the actor to play the Father many talents are needed as well as an array of emotions! A very opportunistic role for Victor Garber to take advantage of in his career as an Actor! (y) ;)

Yay to fiddler! IT's such a wonderful story...and Garber has SUCH an amazing voice! Although I still prefer the Carol Channing/Albert Finney annie to the Victor Garber/Kathy Bates version, it's a close race there! And while I think I'll always be partial to Topol's portrayal of Tevye, it's always interesting to see what different people do with the role. And if it's from the producers of Chicago it will be amAZing.

What's all this about a shaved head??
