Yes it's more or less true...only when there is a short vocal or a double vocal in front of the esset you have to change it into ss... if it's a long vocal the esset is still there
for example:
daß --> dass
Fluß--> Fluss (river)

but not :
Fußball (soccerball)
Fleiß (working'hard...i don't know now a direct translation)

yes definitly friendly...the formal thing would sound so "wooden", unnatural...it's difficult to explain...
A quote like that should give you an advice like a friend...
but it depends on the situation which style you choose

a double vocal are two vocals[they are following one after the other..] for example: ei (like "Fleiß"), eu, ai, au, ie, etc.
So if you have two vocals (we call it doublevocal=Doppelvokal) the esset (ß) stays....
But I must say that those new writing reforms are more or less stupid...it should made the language easier and not more difficult...
I know both ways. Most books are still the old style.... that sucks!

yes..that's good...after a while you won't even recognize the shift between old and new...and as long nobody wants especially one style- it's ok...but i must confess that i started it mixing up...For the essest thing i prefer the new but for the commas i still use the old one I mean that i don't really thing where i'm puuting the commas i just do it like i've done it before

no. it's incredibly difficult to get the hang of, if you know what I mean. ^_^ Though my dad always mutters to himself that he'll learn so he won't have to keep translating the geneaology books that are always in German.
