Chapter 10

Sydney woke up. She was tied to a chair. She groaned. Her head hurt so badly. She saw another figure across the room, tied up as well. Sydney figured it was Vaughn. "Vaughn, is that you?"

"Yes, Adrianne dear." Vaughn said sarcastically. He lowered his voice to a whisper. "Somehow Lefèvre knew we were coming! Do you still have your purse?"

"No, I don’t even know where we are!"

"Well, all I know is that we have to get out of here!"

Sydney looked at him funny, "Well no duh!"

Vaughn raised his eyebrows. "Well I’m sorry if I’m not doing enough! It’s not like I can do much being tied to a chair and all."

"Oh, how sweet. The Eatons are fighting!" Lefèvre walked in the room. "Did you really think you’d get away with stealing my clock? I don’t think so."

Lefèvre snapped his fingers. The 2 guards that had knocked Sydney out, walked in carrying 2 buckets full of water. "Well, if you won’t tell me who you are working for, you’ll have to pay the price."
The guards placed one bucket in front of Vaughn and Sydney. "Ladies first!" One of the guards laughed. He untied Sydney and held her head over the bucket. She struggled to get away from him, but his hold on her was too tight.

"Well? It’s your last chance before your girlfriend here gets dumped." Lefèvre cackled evilly. Vaughn gave one look of sympathy to her.

"Well, I’ve suffered much worse than this!" Sydney murmured to herself. She took a deep breath and waited until her head was plunged into the bucket.

The water was ice cold. The guard brought her head up and didn’t even let her have a chance to take a breath before he dunked her again. He kept repeating the same thing over and over again. Vaughn had to look away. He couldn’t do anything to help her and he couldn’t bear to watch either.

Finally, the guard threw Sydney to the ground, leaving her weak, out of breath, and coughing up water. "Now your turn," Lefèvre said to Vaughn. The second guard did the same thing to Vaughn, over and over. Finally Lefèvre ordered his men to follow him out of the room.

"So, that wasn’t so bad, huh Syd?" Vaughn said, coughing up the last bit of water. "Syd?"

Sydney lay there motionless. Vaughn tried to get to his feet, but was still too weak. He rested for a few minutes then forced himself to get up. He went over to the window. They were on the third floor. He searched around the room and found a parachute. "Dumb Lefèvre obviously didn’t know how capable Michael Vaughn can be."

He pried the window open and started to grab Sydney, but then realized that they still needed the clock. He found her bag by the door. "Well we know now that Lefèvre is very dumb!" He grabbed the bag and Sydney. He heard voices outside in the hall.

"Come on Syd, wake up!" Vaughn slapped her cheeks lightly. "Oh man, this is not good." Vaughn put the harness on and strapped Sydney in too. He climbed up to the window and jumped out, releasing the parachute.

Back in the room, he heard Lefèvre and his guards yelling. They had obviously noticed that Sydney and Vaughn had left. Once they reached the ground, Vaughn carried Sydney as quickly as he could to the limo.

"Back to the hotel please, and step on it!" Vaughn called.

Chapter 10 (continued)

Vaughn paced the waiting room at the nearest hospital. The doctors still wouldn’t let anyone see Sydney. Vaughn had called Jack and Jack was on his way. Oh man! I hope she’s ok.

"Agent Vaughn, you can see Ms. Bristow now." A nurse said.

"Thank you!" Vaughn said. He started walking to room 14, but heard someone calling his name. He turned around to see Jack Bristow running at him.

"Where is Sydney?" Jack said out of breath.

"She’s in room 14, I’m headed there right now."

Jack nodded his head. "Do you mind if I see her first?"

"Go ahead Jack. I’ve waited over 3 hours, I can wait longer." Vaughn laughed.

Jack gave him a sarcastic smile and walked fast to room 14. There was a doctor in there putting an IV in her arm. He smiled when Jack came in. "I assume that you are Mr. Bristow?" Jack nodded. "Your daughter is going to be just fine. She might need to stay a few days, but she will recover."

"What do you mean? What’s wrong with her?" Jack asked, a hint of frustration in his voice.

"We think that there might have been a chemical in the water that made her this way. She would’ve been ok if it was just plain water."

Jack frowned, "So what do you mean? That my daughter is poisoned?’

"Possibly. Mr. Vaughn did not have any of the reactions that Sydney had. She has had a fever of 102.3 for a few hours, and she’s been sweating, and she’s been asleep for awhile. I just took a blood sample and I’m going to take it to the lab right now. I’ll let you know if there is anything wrong with it."

"Alright." Jack gave up trying to argue with the doctor.

"You can talk to her now. Only one person at a time, so tell Mr. Vaughn to come in when you’re done." The doctor left the room. Jack walked over to the bed and carefully sat down on the side.

"Dad? Is that you?" Sydney said, her voice dry and raspy.

"Yes honey, it’s me," Jack brushed away the loose hair on her face, and planted a kiss on her forehead.

"Dad, am I gonna be ok?" Sydney asked. Her eyes started to fill with tears.

"Yes, of course you will." Jack said, stroking her hair.

"Dad, I know there’s another part to it."
"Why don’t you let Agent Vaughn fill you in." Jack kissed her one more time and walked out of the room. She heard Vaughn and her dad talking in low voices. Finally, after a few minutes had passed, Vaughn walked in.

"Hey Syd! How are you?"

"Vaughn, what’s gonna happen to me? Dad wouldn’t tell me."

Vaughn sat down in a chair near the bed. "Syd, they think that there might have been some chemicals in the water. You might have to stay here for a couple days."

"But what about you?"

"Well, I didn’t have any of the symptoms that you did, and they already ran my blood. They’re doing yours now. I’m sorry Syd, but if there is something wrong with you, I’ll do anything to keep you from getting to sick."

Chapter 11

Vaughn went back out to the waiting area to let Sydney rest.

"So how did she take it?" Jack asked.

"Ok. Better than I thought. I think that she’s too tired to process the whole thing." Vaughn explained. Just then, the doctor walked up to Vaughn and Jack.

"Excuse, Agent Vaughn, and Agent Bristow?" The doctor said. "We did find a chemical in her blood."

"Well? Is she gonna be ok or not?" Jack fumed.

The doctor shook his head. "It should be ok for the first few days, but she might not make it."

Jack nodded as the doctor walked away.

Chapter 11 (continued)

Vaughn walked up to the glass that separated Irina and him. Jack walked over next to Vaughn. "We need your help."

"What is it this time?"

"Sydney is in trouble." Vaughn said, worry creasing in his forehead.

"What, what is it?"

Jack took a deep breath. "While on the mission to recover the clock, Lefèvre tortured her."

"Ah, using the water in the bucket way, I assume." Irina crossed her arms.

"Yes. There was a chemical inside the water and she might die at any moment."

Irina hesitated for a moment. "Yes, I will help you. I will need a computer, though. I need to do research and….."

"Granted. I’ll be right back." Jack turned around and walked away. Vaughn began to walk away too.

"Do you love her?’

Vaughn turned around. "That is none of your business."

"Do you love her? Answer me!"

"I don’t know what you are talking about."

"Don’t you fool me, Mr. Vaughn. I know that you love her, and that she loves you. You two are too stupid to realize it. You better say something before it’s too late."

Jack just came back, when Vaughn started to walk away. Jack opened the cell and let Irina out. "Follow me."
